Good to know. I've got two photo books nearly ready in lightroom. I'll have time to complete them next month. I'd planned on pulling them into iPhoto (already on my system) and getting them printed by Apple, but now I can skip that, have MPix print them, and put iPhoto on the growing list of Apple applications I don't need installed taking up critical space on my MBPs little undersized harddrive.

New photos sucks. New iTunes sucks.

I just want aperture 4! And old iTunes

Aperture is gone, when they drop Final Cut then there will be no reason left to own a Mac. Seriously. The reason one buys a computer is to run the software they use. If the software goes away I don't need the computer.

Does anyone actually like Photos? I'm in the process of moving to Adobe Lightroom and find I like it but the transition is not fun, loosing corrections and such.

As someone who frequently used to order Photo Books using iPhoto, Apple is cutting into its own flesh here as my "photo library is too large to have it migrated to Photos" (quote from Apple support after a failed migration attempt). Hello Blurb.com

iPhoto and Aperture were discontinued in the spring of 2015 when Photos for OS X launched as part of OS X Yosemite 10.10.3, but the software continues to be used by many Mac owners who previously had it installed on their machines.

Though Aperture and iPhoto are not available in the Mac App Store and are no longer being updated, the software has remained functional with OS X Yosemite and OS X El Capitan. As of March 31, however, one feature will be disappearing -- the ability to order photo books, prints, and other content created within the two apps. Starting on that date, the Apple Print Products Store will no longer support Aperture or iPhoto.

As noted by a MacRumors tipster and the Apple Support forums, iPhoto and Aperture are now notifying customers who order books or prints about the imminent discontinuation of the feature. Apple employees have also been letting customers know that the printing ability will no longer be available, but Apple doesn't appear to have made an official support document announcing the change.

Photo books, cards, calendars, prints, and more can be created using the Photos for OS X app, which replaced both Aperture and iPhoto.

(Thanks, Mark!)

How do you export projects from old iPhotos into new and terrible Photos Software?

iPhoto was not exactly a breakthrough piece of software. It was so bloated and slow.

Bloated? Not really. I agree iPhoto isn't as fast as I would like but current form of Photos isn't exactly impressive considering the lack of features compared to iPhoto.

Photos is a great replacement for iPhoto, sure it demands a new paradigm for organising albums, but once you get you head around it, it works.

Photos is not a good replacement for Aperture, it is a real shame that Apple dropped support this App. In the great scheme of things such a small proportion of iPhone/Mac users used Aperture that it was no longer necessary to support further development.

Slowly stripping it of its existing functionality, however, is downright shameful.

I wouldn't call it "great replacement for iPhoto". Barely functional would be closer to truth. In my opinion new software should have similar capabilities and Photos lacks about 40% of iPhotos features.

Merodes summarised quite well what is missing in post #31, I would add problematic metadata support and seriously lacking organisation capability into the list.

As for dropping support for prints I am not surprised considering Apples lack of support for older products. Fortunately I can easily order PDF prints online.

This is what I simply don't get about Apple. Why drop support for things they worked so hard to build. Classic environment, print services, whatever else a dozen other people can think of. Near as I can tell in the effort to streamline they don't even keep one department for forsaken products for them to focus on. Even if it is not a revenue or profit center, it could be a customer service and loyalty center.
They have forever been blinded by the assumption that "new = better always" and that the old must go in order for the new to prosper.

Some stuff just simply goes away though and remains unchallenged, what about that?
Aperture is a great example.
And no, Lightroom is NOT just the same in a different dress and from another company, it's SO far from it.

Apple is testing my loyalty, certainly not gonna invest as much into their products in the future anymore.

The financial channels are calling Apple a cell phone company now. That "criticism" implies it can all go away and disregards the annuity they have locked in with an ecosystem. But there is currently no next big product on the horizon. Nonetheless the cashflow and growth rate they have in no way justifies a $100 stock price. Closer to $200. AAPL has been the piggybank of folks under stress on other positions to avoid a margin call.

I was literally not aware this stuff made it into Photos, despite looking. It's in none of the menus. I went to vistaprint last week to get prints made. :(

It turns out, I was supposed to hit the "+" button on photos, which I assumed meant "add to album" or some other dingbat feature. How is "+" meant to convey "Create a Photo Album project". I never would have clicked that had this article not informed me that the feature was, indeed, still in Photos somewhere. I should have spent a few more minutes looking around. I guess I prefer the obviousness of iPhoto.

Discoverability does not mean "keep clicking buttons to see what they do".

This a million times over. We shouldn't be surprised about new features.

Aperture was one of the main reasons I had a Macbook Pro Retina. But the way Apple treats customers who paid for their pricey software (Aperture was quite expensive until they dumped the price) made me walk away. Apple has become unpredictable when it comes to software/hardware support.

Their product support will -as customers walk away- cost them more money than it would have costed to support products like Aperture.

I would hurt someone a lot if I could get an updated version of Aperture.

And I'm still shocked Apple still has their own print services running at all.

Need to check, if that's possible it's 1 step. Then I still need to find a good printing service for books that either directly accepts my PDF from Aperture or find some easy workflow to get it work with other photo book apps. But the ones I know and tried out so far made me want to throw myself out of the window…
Some months have passed. Have you found a combination of software for processing images and a printing company that keeps as much of the Aperture/Create Album/Print Book flow? My wife had been using Aperture Books for several years and it was an unwelcome surprise when she submitted one for production and found out Aperture Books were no longer an option. Would appreciate your input or anyone else's. Thanks. I'm new to the Discussion Board

Hi, I do not have a solution to suggest but this is something that I am interested in as well. I worked on a Photobook for my niece over the summer only to find out I cannot order it from Apple anymore. Terribly disappointed. Nevertheless, I have been wondering the same thing, how to use the Aperture and iPhoto workflow and still print these things.

I have come across a few web sites that claim to allow you print Aperture photobooks but when I looked further into it, most of them do not offer the proper size or have some limitation. I would prefer to just click and print if that his possible.
