I think Apple didn't help themselves with the review embargo dates, they had a lot of people buy this blind.

It's been a while since Apple put out a product that really wasn't for everyone. I have a long history of buying first or second gen apple products, and if not buying them, supporting them. I think that a lot of current apple consumers don't get what is involved in the decision making process around that.

Reasons for returning: It feels rushed...amazing potential...but rushed. It feels like an internal prototype they decided to sell at an enterprise price point. For all the components that are improvements over existing VR/AR products, the lenses feel a generation or two behind where the Quest 3 is. I've owned every Oculus/Meta product since the DK1, the Vive, the PSVR and the glare, distortion around the edges, etc. feels like DK2, Rift era. They don't want to, but they NEED the precision of physical controllers. Hell, make them optional, but many applications that thrive in VR necessitate a level of precision input, lag, etc. that can only be captured with actual switches, buttons, analog sticks, and the data you get from accelerometers, gyros, etc. in a handheld piece of hardware. Cameras tracking hands can only get you so far. A controller will still give positional data and input when occluded from the vision of the tracking cameras. Am I wrong in thinking this is the first time they've introduced a "Pro" version of a product that's never had a non-Pro version? The Vision Pro needed a couple more hardware passes and time in the software cooker to make it worth what they're asking. I don't fault anyone for enjoying a prototype Apple decided to sell but THIS isn't ready for mass market. It's for a subset of a subset of mass market. And the mass market isn't going to casually blow $4k on something that only makes them curious about v2, v3.

This part is a big miss that I hope they change course on

There are many VR game devs who are interested in the AVP from a visuals standpoint, but tons have tried it and prototyped already and it's DOA for VR gaming for most of them without some controller hardware of some kind.

Looking forward to the rest of the world launch, then we can have the same arguments all over again. Still think this product is probably the future as far as computers go for the vast majority of people.
I would not be surprised if it were to be delayed. Apple will crunch the numbers, assess the feedback (apparently everyone is being asked why they are returning) and will learn lessons.

It'll be interesting to see how many get returned. This whole thing has the potential to become the next Newton, if Apple's not careful.

On a side note... I wish there was something in settings here at the website so I could filter out all Vision Pro posts. It's near-incessant!

Vision Pro is everything WRONG with smart glasses/googles. The vast majority of people want portable, lightweight and affordable smart glasses like the Ray Ban Meta. It's strange how badly Apple missed with Vision Pro. For example, the Vision Pro doesn't even fit in your pockets and it's too heavy to wear.

I'd so so so love to be a fly on the wall inside Apple.
A year or so ago we heard that there were big disagreements within Apple about many not wanting this particular product to be released, but to hold back until they could make something they really wanted to make.
But the "Powers that be" wanted this particular product finished off and released.
I'd love to be hearing all the conversations going on behind closed doors right now.

I think those who wanted it held back are being proven correct.

I'm sure this won't be the case, but..........................

Do you think there is the slightest chance that Apple will think again, put a hold on the Vision Pro and following user feedback from the US only launch, not launch it in other countries, but pause the roll out until things are improved to avoid more negative worldwide feedback?

I absolutely think they will hold off further rollout

returned mine.

* having to look at little icons intentionally got tiresome over time
* my eyes wander a lot and there would be errant presses
* headset was heavy but that was a minor issue compared to the above
* price: expensive for what you get
* i used the AVP for maybe a couple days and got bored of it quickly
* its a great early adopter device, not a great mainstream consumer device
* i will purchase the second gen if its half the price with lighter materials
* passthrough quality was underwhelming along with the persistence
* hand occlusion when watching a movie in a dark environment was awesome though. that felt futuristic as heck
* keyboard + monitor setup remains undefeated when it comes to productivity workflows

This is the thing that has plagued basically all devices in this space.

To be long term mainstream successful Apple has to figure out the killer use case and fully optimize around that.

A device that sort of kind of does some cool stuff here and there is a product that should never be released

Man is Apple really missing great “product people” these days.

This was a very time consuming, laborious and expensive misstep

i agree. the AVP is Meta's equivalent to the Quest Pro.

executives at Apple need to get off the pedestal and actually listen to internal critical feedback. As John Carmack stated, the premium material in any HMD is lightness of the device itself.

We will never know what the return rate actually is for paying customers. But what will be just as interesting, not to mention obvious, is how long Apple decides to wait in turning around the returns as refurbished units.
What will be more interesting is how long Apple decides to revise Return Policies on AVP
