The iOS 17.1 update that is expected to be released to the public next week does not appear to address an issue that is causing some iPhone models to turn off sporadically at night, interrupting alarms, silencing notifications, and otherwise disrupting nighttime iPhone usage.

On devices running iOS 17.1, we here at MacRumors have continued to experience problems, and there are also continued reports about the issue on the MacRumors forums, both from those running iOS 17.0.3 and those running iOS 17.1.

If your iPhone opens to the passcode screen in the morning, or if an alarm fails to go off at the correct time, it's likely you have been impacted by this bug. In some cases, the iPhone merely reboots, but in other cases, it turns off for several hours. The shutdown bug appears to impact multiple iPhone models, though many of the complaints have been from iPhone 15 users.

You can tell if your ‌iPhone‌ turned off at night by opening up the Settings app, navigating to Battery, and checking the charging status over the past 24 hours. If there's a gap, the ‌iPhone‌ was turned off for a period of time.

There is no word on when this issue might be fixed, and Apple has yet to comment.

iPhones shutting off at night is a feature, not a bug. Most people are sleeping at night. The iPhone shutting off at night helps save energy. That's better for the environment. Just another way Apple's helping with the environment and reducing our carbon footprint.

Never experienced this with any of my iPhones over 14 years. Not happening with my 13 Pro running 17.0.3.

I recently had a worry with my M1 MacBook Air failing to charge properly. Even now, with it plugged in, it hovers at the same charge level for hours at a time. Battery Health is "good", but won't charge up while in use. Could there be recent bugs introduced into the Power Management software affecting both iOS and macOS devices?

Please Apple: how about a Snow Leopard year or even TWO: bug fixes & refinements instead of glitz & gimmicks? iOS, iPadOS, macOS and tvOS please! Take that time to revive "just works" again.

Because the armchair experts will scream "Nothing changed! Apple is only in it for the money!". Is that type of nonsense worth being spread in the news?

power management will now maintain a charge of 80% if you normally keep your computer on the charger or it will wait to charge to full when it predicts you will be using it that day.

I'll compromise with 5 gimmicks/yr and 6 months of Snow Leopard focus for the next 4 rounds. Or shoot the armchair experts.

"Just works" benefits all. "May or may not work" or "works sporadically" affects us all.

My phone was at 100% charge, I TURNED IT OFF, and in the morning it wouldn’t turn on again. It said the battery was dead. Somehow it drained 100% while turned off. Had to recharge the battery completely up from 0.

Last night, it drained from 57% to 47% while in low power mode and not used at all, in 6 hours, and with zero apps open.

If your iPhone just reboots, will it show a break in the battery level graph? I've woken up needing to put in my passcode, but never a break in the battery graph. I thought it was just a rando. thing Apple did for security making you put in the passcode once in a while.

Potentially related—I've had my 15 Pro for almost a month and it still hasn't figured out the Optimized Battery pattern. That is, it charges immediately to 100% and stays there all night, instead of plateauing at 80% until just before I wake up.

I was thinking about that today. Snow Leopard and High Sierra are two OS’s I’m glad stuff got abandoned on. They were rock solid in my personal experience. I’d love another year of just getting things back to some semblance of semi-solid.
