I can’t wait for some company to make a braided cable for MagSafe. Just like anker lightning to usb c cables

Of course you did. Cause back then Apple device didn't have it. But now they do of course you changed your mind. But don't worry , many on here felt the same as you.
Honestly, wireless charging is not totally useless. It’s not as fast as wired, and i rarely use it. Now if the heat issue and speed were mitigated, I could see it being useful instead of an edge case for charging.

The worst part is that iPhone 12s most likely charge very very slowly in Qi charges as well!! It is a double whammy if you buy iPhone 12 series and/or MagSafe.....A big thanks with folded hands, no thanks!!

i wonder what the heat output of these things. Whenever i charge my 8+ wirelessly, it heats up quite a lot. That heat couldnt be good for the battery health as they absolutely hate heat
Same with my 8 Plus and the mophie juice pack, which enables wireless charging even for the 7 plus. I always feel bad for the phone because of how warm It gets. For that reason I only use the belkin wireless charger to charge overnight when I’m not using the screen. I’ve always felt like when a phone or tablet device is charging it’s a bad idea to use the display due to the passive cooling and the embedded battery!

I don’t get the fascination with wireless charging. I can either plug in a device so I can lay a phone on top of it to charge or I can simply plug the phone using its charging port. At least with the charging cable connected you can pickup the phone and use it and make calls. Now wireless charging would be a neat idea if I can use the phone and charge it without having to lay the phone over a charger.

Reverse charging is an even a tougher sell to me. Why would I drain my battery to charge another device? I’d rather charge that device with its own cable.

I think Apple had this in mind with MagSafe charging. The magnet is pretty strong on the new iPhone and the MagSafe stays connected when you pick the phone up. So you can use it whilst charging.

However a big puck on the back makes it uncomfortable to use compared to a wire plugged into the lightning port.

But this is testing grounds for Apple to remove the lightning port altogether further down the line I believe.

I don't know if I like that magnetic thing at all. Is it even safe to carry a magnet in your pocket for prolonged time? How will the magnet affect my parking card, credit card etc in the long term?

Maybe I'll just go for the cheaper iPhone 11 Pro at this point ...

The whole fact that apple wants to cut the ultimate cord Is what gets me. they can do it, but they better give me the better alternative. For example my iPhone pro 12 charges to 50% full in 28 minutes using the 20W fast charger or so, but the magsafe setup i have with charger and 20w brick 30 minutes only came up to 30%.

The MagSafe is so slow on the 12pro, I used the app Amphere to test it and these are my results.
Apple Iphone 12 pro with the latest iOS 14.1
magsafe with usb c
20w power adapter
magsafe clear case for the iphone 12

on Their website apple states that the magsafe can deliver *upto 15* but I’m not getting not even 7.5w which is the what the mophie Qi charger apple was endorsing for the longest time. I did this test while charging my phone below 80%

Because it doesn’t work with older iPhone models?
Because it doesn’t work with ANY other phones. So much for an industry standard for wireless charging. So much better for the environment having to buy multiple wireless charging solutions.

I was hopeful the yet to be released MagSafe duo would be perfect for a communal charging station for the family & guests to use. But no, it’ll only work with my 12 pro.

oh, I didn’t realize that they announced it as an open-standard, available to be used to charge everything.
I got an impression it’s 12/12 pro exclusive feature.

These wireless chargers are such a waste of electricity, so much is lost in just heat...
As long as we keep a sense of scale: using wireless charging once per day instead of cabled will add around 3 kWh per year to your usage. Average power usage per household per year in US is 10.000 kWh. If you want to save the environment, how you’re charging your phone probably isn’t the first priority. For comparison, in Denmark that number is 1.600 (sorry that was per person, actual number 4000)

edit: Another comparison: wash the dishes by hand instead of using the dishwasher once every quarter, and you’ll have saved what compares to the excess charging electricity...

Poor excuse, especially when they’re playing the environmentally friendly card with lack of charger and headphones in the box.

And they haven’t touted it as a 12 exclusive, they’ve said it would work with Qi compatible phones.

It’s all relative, though. You only charge it with a few Watt a few hours a day, so waste is comparable to what other devices use in 24hrs of standby (or a PS5 in a few minutes).

Its not really worth worrying about. (If you’re concerned about the environment, worry about where your electricity comes from and switch to a clean energy provider. And make sure your big devices are efficient. That will have a greater impact than plugging in a cable.)

Apple said you could charge any Qi compatible device with it

I was honestly intrigued by the AirPower, and probably would have bought it. But Apple axed it.

Magsafe on the other hand, err NO.
It’s apparently slower, leaves a mark and is not actually wireless as in drop and forget Qi chargers, as the magnets make it stick to the back off iPhone.
Just feels like a solution looking for problem.

Two rotten apples fallen from the Apple Tree, specifically in the wireless charging segment. o_O

That’s incorrect. A modern dishwasher is much more efficient than washing by hand, because it uses much less water and therefore less water needs to be heated.

Dryers, however, are inefficient. Air drying in summer has a big effect.

I haven’t bought one of these MagSafe pucks yet. Was going to see what third party ones appear in black and with a power adapter included.

in the meantime I charged my iPhone 12 on a standard IKEA qi pad built into my bed side table - phone seemed to charge fine over night - 100% in the morning by 7AM just like my previous 8 did.

not sure what all the fuss is about with faster charging (wired of wireless), all it does is knacker your battery in. I suppose it can get you out of trouble on occasion. Should be the exception rather than the norm.

Unless you’re like me and use pure cold water at a very trickling rate! haha
