If “Joe Average”(someone that doesn’t read forums such as this one) goes on Apple’s website and clicks “compare”, the first comparison it shows is the iPhone X’s 5.8” Super Retina HD display vs the iPhone 8 Plus’s 5.5 Retina HD display. That person would assume they would be getting a bigger display with the X and therefore be shown larger images.
This argument has some validity but let be honest, screens have been sold by the diagonal for over a decade. “Joe Average” should be well aware how screens are measured by this point. You don’t need to be a techie or signed up for a forum such as this to understand this. I’ve never met anyone who spends $1000+ on a TV without at least educating themselves about the screen size. The claim that Apple advertised the iPhone X as larger than a Plus or otherwise mislead consumers hold no weight.

Reminder that, despite some questionable marketing by Apple to use the 5.8" horizontal measurement, the screen on the X is NOT bigger than the screen on the Plus.

AFAIK, from day 1 back in (what, 1945?) ALL video screens were measured diagonally. And for Apple, from day 1 and the original iPhone, this practice has been continued. FYI, "bbowser", the IP8+ 5.5" screen is also a diagonal measurement.

That said, screen size = length * width. Since the X is slightly smaller in width, the actually sq inches are probably slightly less than the IP8+. So, who cares? When I hold my X up to my ear (flash, it's also a phone), I don't look like a dork holding a smaller iPad mini like it's also a phone.

PS IF the X were the same size as the IP8+, I would have stuck with my IP8 or 7 or 6, all with 4.7" displays.

You don’t need to be confrontational, especially since I wasn’t arguing. Yes, the screen is smaller but it is by no means significant. I’ve owned 2 pluses and now the x and I can say I love the X and in no way mind the slightly narrower width. Also, I was requesting the source from the person who wrote about 2.6%, which that poster promptly responded. If you felt the need to respond to me that is fine, but you come off as a bit patronizing.

I do want to address your claim of misleading marketing. Selling screens by the size of the diagonal has been in practice for years and used by every major manufacturer/reseller of nearly every type of display. Also, Apple never advertised the iPhone X as larger than the Plus. This claim by you is in fact misleading and a misrepresentation of Apple.

Moving on, I don’t think there is anything more to add to this thread. The X is smaller, but in my OPINION the better phone. It all comes down to personal preference.

Reminder that, despite some questionable marketing by Apple to use the 5.8" horizontal measurement, the screen on the X is NOT bigger than the screen on the Plus. All it is is taller. The X screen is significantly more narrow, and the total AREA is also less on the X.

And please no comments about pixels and useable space. The laws of physics have not changed because Apple says so. If anything, the X losses space due to the unibrow and the rounded corners. Nothing wrong with it, to each their own, but don't expect to have a screen that is marketed as bigger, actually be bigger.

See attachment.

No confusion. And personally id far prefer a coupke percent less screen and a far smaller body...

Kind of surprised people are being condescending to the OP about this.

Probably because he started by saying that Apple was trying to “violate the laws of physics,” and then by implying that everyone doesnt understand the screen size. If you are condescending to people in your post, cant be surprised if they are in return.

And for what its worth... to many people, the screen size of the 7 was too small, but the plus was too huge of a chassis to lug around and get out of your pocket. The X gives u nearly same screen as the plus, with a much much nicer chassis size.

All I can add is that I too went from a 7+ to an X and the screen difference has been of no hindrance.

The only thing I notice is that I occasionally mis-type something because of the slightly narrower on screen keyboard, but otherwise the OLED screen makes up for it (as well as being able to save battery by turning the screen to gray scale. (http://appleinsider.com/articles/17...-with-dark-mode-inverted-colors-and-grayscale).

I might consider an X -plus if the rumours about it come to fruition next year, but my X along with an Element Case make the phone size just perfect.
