I guess this confirms my recent thoughts of this being a 'low end' PSP model.
But what I don't get is how much are they intending to save by swapping out the UMD drive with internal memory, any generous amount is going to be expensive.

Still we don't know the specs and details. If they allow us to somehow transfer our UMDs to this device then it could be a definite buy. Keep the 2000 model for homebrew and emulators and use the PSP Go for dedicated PSP games.

Good idea for the back though. The metallic ring on the back of my PSP-2000 is scratched as hell!

Edit: Oh and apparently it has 16gb and Bluetooth and it's not here to replace the standard PSP. Yey.

And there we have it folks, just like I said ;)

Memory may be expensive, but at least Sony knows that the only place you're getting your Go! games is directly from them. In the long run, totally secure digital distribution of PSP software will save Sony millions. Like I said, the rampant piracy over the past few years has brought this on.

:apple:

I don' think it's that ugly... but the current PSP is definitively sexier than this. Also, on the PSP Go... the controls seems low... I have big hands, and I don't think I would like to play hours on it.

It's real folks. I think I'll stick to my PSP 2000.

Battery life will be the killer here, especially if they have bluetooth on the device which EATS battery life.

It is nice looking. Chances are very likely that I'll trade in my PSP Slim for one, even if it ends up catching dust like mike Slim does now :D

16GB flash mem is sweet too.

Hey if you're having a UMD sale you have my address ;)

Turns out there's another MGS coming out on the PSP too. I'm hoping it's a port of a MGS1-3 game, or maybe some spin off of 4.
I'm kinda excited for the little device now. It's been a fantastic RPG and PS1 emulation system for me and now it looks like more really stellar games could be under development too.

Ugh, one more swing and a miss for Sony.

Although they claim they will run the PSP 3000 alongside it, i would have thought they are dying to kill off the UMD. I recon They'll be phasing out the PSP 3000 as soon as they can. Lazy digital distribution saves them a hell of a lot of money when the likes of the PS3 still apparently hemorrhaging money with every unit sold.

Its a worrying development - exclusively downloadable games. Say 15 years in the future, i'm on a retro rush, and want to play my old PSP / XBLA / WiiWare etc. game, but somethings corrupted and i need to download it again. You seriously expect them to keep their servers up all that time? Physical media please.

When closed, it looks awesome. Open though.... ugh. And no 2nd stick is such a huge bummer (though we all knew it wasn't gonna be there). Sony could have had PS2 support etc... ugh. And built in memory sucks. Mem sticks aren't expensive anymore (and hell, their new phone uses SD cards...)

At the end of my laugh time I actually started liking this PSPgo....was this an intentional leak:confused:

Sikkinixx did you see the top of the thing...it has a memory slot.

Bless

I will wait to see more, but so far it just isn't that interesting to me. The form factor is not so great, and until they deal with the compatibility issue I won't move.

Actually starting to like it. The size looks perfect, and it looks pretty slick closed. They cleaned it up a lot, and I'm sure it'll be great without UMD. I'll probably keep my PSP, but I might pick this up too. I hope it's cheap.

I'll have to hold it and see how it feels ergonomically. It doesn't look comfortable in the picture (especially the analog stick), but I'll give it a chance to surprise me.

I'm guessing somewhere around the PSP-3000's price (which is $169).

I imagine it will be less than that. Going off its looks it seems to be a 'budget' model. And if they have finally sorted out piracy on that device then they could get away with charging less since they should make their money back from software.
I'm going to guess £99, given the PSP-3000 is £139 here. DS Lites are £109 for comparison.

The placement of the analogue stick looks like it'll give you some serious cramping through prolonged use.

I'm still baffled by the design. The fans gave them such a cool design to build off. How did they go from this:

to this:

My reaction:
- Memory Stick Micro is unnecessary. It means your current sticks are incompatible, and surely smaller form factor = smaller maximum capacity? If Sony really wanted this to maximise storage, they'd release a special high capacity MS Duo by combining the flash chips inside the Micro.
- No mention of 802.11g/n. Please God let it be in there. I tried downloading a God of War demo from my PSP once, and it took ages. Hours, I think. With no background downloading. Faster wireless is essential.
- No second stick? Seriously?
- Form factor isn't so bad, it's just not as good as we've come to expect from Sony
- I really like the restated commitment to the PSP. It's great that I'm going to be able to play LBP, Gran Turismo and MGS on my PSP-1000. Really like the compatibility.

Still, if the key to a successful platform is lots of great games, Sony should speed the hell up with their PSOne classics, especially in Europe. There are games like MGS and FF7/8/9 just lying around waiting to sell consoles for them. That would give the system a massive boost.

Overall, this new system brings no (or next to zero) additional value to existing PSP owners. However, the commitment to the existing PSP platform is cool, and should give existing owners something good for their consoles.

About what you expect from Sony.
  • why no 2nd analog nub?
  • yet another type of memory card, although at least there's 16GB internal
  • smaller screen? oh well, hopefully it's a better one than the 3000 has
  • might get lost in my American mits, especially when using the stick
  • like the original, it won't be dropped n my pocket without some protection for the screen
  • it's not fugly, but the fan render is way cooler looking

If they drop the PSP-3000 to $129 and price the Go! at no more than $169 [or vice versa??], they might breathe life into the PSP brand yet.
