The space between two cars just does not look safe to me for a motorcycle, maybe if the two cars are stopped and you are moving slowly between them.
all depends on the riders perspective, plenty of times I don't take the chance because it's a tight fit .

It’s been along time for me although I was stopped two years ago for not having a plate on the front of my car. Here is my question/impression which is there are two kinds of warning, a verbal of which there is no record, and written, such as get your brake light fixed ASAP, where it is recorded in some fashion, I suppose to hand out a ticket in the future if the directive is not complied with?
fix it tickets used to be you could just get it fixed and show it to another cop, NOW you have to get it fixed, pay 25-50 or so and still show a cop

And if you'd been given a ticket and went to court in the US(which is your right on any ticket), the officer would get on the stand and say "Driver admitted to traveling 33mph. The posted speed limit was 30mph."

You hung yourself the second you admitted to speeding. Nothing else would matter-the ticket would stick. The only thing that would dismiss it is a generous feeling judge who might say "Well 3 over is a really small amount to ticket someone."

Like I said, it doesn't matter if you think there's an allowed difference in speedometer reading-in reality in most places(in the US) whether or not you're ticketed for a few over probably depends on the officer's mood and whether your attitude helps or hurts that mood.

dude relax, bunn is correct but since you got no ticket it's irrelevant, correct answer when asked by cops is "I don't know" when they ask how fast you were going or when asking if you know what you did wrong, get a dash cam just in case.

Even if an allowance is built into the law(you'd have to do some digging on that-speed limits are generally absolute), it's to allow for incorrect calibration of your speedometer.

If you'd been pulled over and said "My speedometer said I was going 30" (and you'd been ticketed, which makes this all a moot point) you MIGHT have a case. The officer MIGHT have said "your speedo is 3mph off" and let you off with anything from a "keep that in mind" to a written warning, or if you'd gone to court with a ticket the judge MIGHT have dismissed and said "remember this in the future."

As it is, "allowance" or not, you admitted you were speeding. That's an open and shut case-if you'd said you were going 31, you still could have been written a ticket for it and there's a good chance it would have stuck.

As said, if this happens again, SHUT UP and don't say how fast you thought you were going.

BTW, I'll go back to the speedometer calibration thing. The speedo in one of my vehicles reads a consistent 5mph slow(or actually I should say that at higher speeds it bounces between 10 under and the correct speed over, but averages out to 5 slow). Since I know that, if I'm holding my speed at 70mph on the interstate, the speedometer says 65. If I were pulled over with my speedometer reading 70, I MIGHT get away with it but then might not(there again, my record, officer's mood, whether or not I act in a way that helps or hurts that mood).

Out of curiosity, how long have you been driving?

Try that sentence "You don't get it, do you" with the next police officer who pulls you over, and see how far the excuse expressed in slang 'speedos are not correct' gets you.

And - riddle me this - are they only "not correct" in one direction?

Instead of accepting that you got lucky, you are now attempting to argue that you are right and had the right to behave as you did.

BTW, I love older BMW M-cars(like every other car guy on the planet, I might sell my soul for a nice E39 M5) but unfortunately the OP also seems to be exhibiting the behavior I see in many drivers of M-cars.

Here in the US you have to be "issued a ticket", i.e., they will present you with a paper document, that you have to sign, that indicates, the infraction, location, officer badge ID, etc.

I can't image any other variation - including in the UK - where you leave and get a ticket after-the-fact (if it's an officer stop vs. something automated like a red light cam).

Correction, you don't get points just by being issued a ticket. The judge has the final say on the ticket and based on his decision, that will determine if you receive any points on your record.

The ticket alone will not get you points, it is what happens in court that dictates if or how many points.

I don't see where I said anything about points, only that a filed infraction requires a ticket, signature, the specific infraction (and how it was determined, i.e., radar, visual) is documented.

Now, I see that he has signed up to gloat about his BMW M, while insisting upon his right to break the speed limit, and lecturing us on the shortcomings of "speedos", and sneering at those of us 'who don't get it', because he has rights, and can "get" engineers.

Even the very thread title is a bit of a giveaway, and, instead of expressing gratitude and relief that a police officer acted with proportionate courtesy, the OP exhibits signs in his posts of boundless arrogance and bottomless entitlement.

But, surely such a fine example of German engineering doesn't have any deficiencies in the speedometer :)


BTW, I don't want to start a holy war, but I do have an advanced degree in a "hard" natural science. You don't want to ask me or many of my colleagues what we think of engineers :) . I've had someone from Chemical Engineering who I've been working with for a few weeks on an interesting project and I'm happy to do it(and had a good working relationship with him) but sometimes it's hard to explain that some of the things they are requesting don't just happen(fortunately the guys I've been working with have been great when I've explained just what it holding me up on certain aspects and also keen to learn the details of what I'm doing).

While that may be a rule of thumb, if you're over the limit, you can get a ticket regardless of being within 10% +2.

Bear in mind that a speed limit is the maximum allowable speed in good conditions. Add rain, fog, wind, etc., to that and you should be slowing down below the speed limit. Few people do. But that's the theory.

It doesn't matter if you're driving the same speed as the rest of traffic. If you're over the limit, a cop can cite you.

You are largely correct but here’s more California information.

The maximum speed limit applies to places such as freeways where maximum speeds are capped at 55 and 65, etc. Traveling the max limit +1 is a violation.

Surface streets where the limits are typically 15, 25, 30, etc are regulated by “safe speed” which are typically set at the 85th percentile of the surveyd speed of the roadway under normal conditions. There are regulatory guidelines on how the posted safe speeds are set as conditions come into play. A lower posted safe speed can be justified based on typical traffic conditions, schools, commercial business, pedestrian traffic, and things like blind alleys and many driveways or obstructions.

However when it comes to a violation of the posted safe speed, 35 +1 is not necessarily a violation of 22350 VC. And I call bull**** on those people who say they received a ticket and convicted in court for going 36 and a 35. This is not a maximum limit. The officer MUST STILL testify in court that the speed on the citation was an unsafe speed. And good luck trying to convince a traffic judge that +1 is unsafe. Btw, an officer can issue a citation for unsafe speed for traveling 30 mph in a posted 30 if the conditions justify a slower safe speed (weather and other unusual conditions). The officer must be able to justify the lower than posted safe speed was the temporary safe speed based on what was reasonable and prudent due to the prevailing conditions.
