how would you downgrade to 3.1.2?
can you download it from somewhere?

Yes you can here

Now normally the downgrade doesn't work since they supposedly aren't signed anymore by Apple ... But I just was able to downgrade to 3.1.2 from 3.1.3 and JB ... Now I'm upgrading to 4.0 ... hope it goes well

I have a 3GS with old bootrom that is on public 4.0, was jailbroken on 3.1.2 at one time a few months ago. I don't need an unlock, just a jailbreak. Can I use PwnageTool for that?

so could i do what shigs said
which was this

I have a 3GS 3.1.3 Jailbroken with Spirit baseband 5.12.01 with the old bootrom. I know I can not use pwnagetool 4.0 in my phones current state but if I downgrade to 3.1.2 and jailbreak with blackra1n I believe I should be able to, am I right?

Yes .. I did just that about 2 minutes ago ... I'm now running a JB 4.0 on my 3GS. Coming from a JB 3.1.2.

No.

iPhone 3GS

Summary: Currently, PwnageTool only works on previously jailbroken 3GS devices with the old bootrom.

•If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3GS with the OLD BOOTROM and you DID NOT use Spirit to jailbreak then you can create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.0 and restore with your jailbroken recovery mode.
•If you have an iPhone 3GS with the NEW BOOTROM this is NOT supported by PwnageTool 4.0

You wont be able to downgrade it unless you have your SHSH's saved for your 3GS.
Dont listen to misinformation.
Try if you dont believe and then report back.

I understood that, perhaps I poorly worded my post. Essentially I'm asking if I can downgrade to 3.1.2 and jailbreak and then upgrade to 4.0 as others are mentioning. My SHSH's are on file on Saurik's server.

Look ... I know it did not work before ... Don't have to convince me, I was stuck with a dead 3GS for months now since I went to 3.1.3 ... But just now I was able to downgrade without the SHSH files ... If I had video I'd show you ... I know it is strange but maybe Apple enabled it again for troubleshooting ???

How were you able to save one for 3.1.3 before jailbreaking with spirit?

If you have a 3.1.2 saved then you will be able to.

So does this work, or not work with a 3G?

From the Dev-Team:

iPhone 3G

If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3G at 3.1.2 (but not jailbroken with Spirit) then you should create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.0 and restore from recovery mode or DFU mode.
If you have an out of the box iPhone 3G you should restore using a PwnageTool 4.0 ipsw using DFU mode.
If you have a Jailbroken 3.1.3 iPhone 3G it is very possible that this can fail from recovery mode, if this failure happens you will need to restore using DFU mode.
As an alternative to PwnageTool, you can use redsn0w on iPhone 3G (on both Windows and Mac) as mentioned in our last post.

How where you able to save one for 3.1.3 before jailbreaking with spirit?

.

perhaps i didnt then, i was just following instructions on the net and done it with auto shsh or something

i dont really understand

Nope no troubleshooting or anything.
I dont know what you did or claim you did but its not possible to downgrade firmware on a 3GS unless you have your SHSH's saved locally or thru cydia PERIOD.

I will later tonight if you still need them....does it matter if i mac them on mac or not?

Cool, yes IPSW's made with pwnage using a mac will work fine.

Yes, if you have an early bootrom/untethered JB 3GS and SHSH's saved you can do that.

Could it be that simple for me?
I have a 3GS unlocked with Pwnagetool on 3.1.2.
All I have to do is run Pwnagetool 4.0 and install ultrasn0w?

I have the same exact set up as you. I'm hopping it is this easy.... I'll find out tonight.

Hehehe ... I don't expect you to believe me, I find it weird myself ... I've put my iPhone (with 3.1.3) into DFU took a stock 3.1.2 and restored ... now I had some other tools open I admit that ... But the restore worked (I have no gain in lying about it) ... And no SHSH on file or on the server from Cydia.

Anyway ... I'm running the ios4 now and happy with it ... UltraSn0w works great too.

Hmm. I was impatient and updated my 3GS to official 4.0 yesterday. I would be mad about having to downgrade to 3.1.x, jailbreak, then run PwnageTool 4.0, but I figure I will just stay unjailbroken since I will be getting an iPhone 4 on Thursday anyway. I just hope the iPhone 4 jailbreak is released soon :p the one thing I really miss about being jailbroken is 3G Unrestrictor.

Sorry guys, I know "I'm just another one of those 3gs users caught in limbo" but I wanted to see if any of you experts could straighten my situation out for me. I have a 3gs that I upgraded (prematurely, it seems) from 3.1.3 to 4.0. I have the new basehand (which apparently isn't a problem anymore) but I have the old bootrom. So, is it conceivable for me to downgrade to 3.1.2 and jailbreak/unlock from there? Or am I stuck in limbo for a couple more days? Thanks.
