So I'm confused because I've never done this before...

I have a 3G and I'm just looking to unlock it before selling so that it is worth a bit more. Right now I am on 3.1.3 and modem firmware 05.12.01. It looks like I can use pwnage tool to jailbreak then download unlock from cydia?

But what about iOS4? Is there any way I can install that first, then jailbreak/unlock? I have a feeling whoever I sell this to will upgrade to iOS4 and get really angry when it ****s up the unlock...

Well no one is going to release anything until they test on the new phone, not sure if any of them was able to get their hand on them today or not..

True dat. Either way it's out of my hands. I'm sure I'll make some decent cash for my 3GS. :)

That's why I have two lines on alternating renewals. This year the 3g is going up for sale and the wife get's the 3gs. I upgrade ever year for free or I get paid to do it. :)

After trying several times, I got 4.0 on my 3GS with Pwnagetool.

This is what I did:
1. Update iTunes to 9.2
2. Download Pwnagetool 4.0 - See http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ for link to download.
3. Download 4.0 ipsw from http://www.mobiclue.com/2010/06/ios-4-direct-download-iphone-3g-3gs-ipod-touch-2g-3g-ipsw-links.html
4. Make custom firmware with pwnagetool.
5. Put iPhone into Recovery mode, not DFU mode otherwise you will get 1600 errors. Recovery mode is when you see the iTunes logo. You do not want to see the Apple logo.
6. Open iTunes and hold the Option button while clicking on the Restore button in iTunes.
7. Select your custom firmware and let iTunes do its thing.

The restore took about 5 minutes to complete. Restoring from a backup is taking an hour.

I have an iPhone 3G
3.1.3 (7E18) Firmware
05.12.01 Modem Firmware

I have used Pwnagetool before, but not since 2.0 Firmware

I have NOT done anything to this iPhone... NO JailBrake and NO Unlock. This is the first time. Will it work?

Will your Step 5 also apply to me? or should i go into DFU Mode?

ALSO:
when creating the Custom ISPW... i used Expert Mode.
Did you Select to:
1. Activate the phone
2. Enable baseband update
3. Re-enable functionality

and did you leave the:
Root partition size: 756

PLEASE HELP!!!
:confused::confused::confused:

pt4 does not see phone?:(

hey guys, i have a quick q. i've jailbroken my device and toooons before (2gs, orig from launch). I've created my new ipsw and all, however, pwnagetool 4 WON'T see my phone to put it into DFU mode. does anyone have any ideas? it just sits at connect device ... and all works - itunes detects the phone perfectly fine, as does iphoto and phoneView.

any help would be greatly appreciated =( ive tried all i can think of..

3GS update and jailbreak went fine. But phone does not recognize ATT and enters safe mode. Restarting does not put it out of safe mode. Springboard crashes. Any ideas?

I got it working on a 3GS. But now I lost my carrier logo. How do I get it back? Last time had to download a fix from cydia but it says it's only for 3.1.x firmware.

The tool doesn't have the option for a 3G. Do you just pick 3GS and then point it to the 3G 4.0 ipsw?

Exactly. I sold my 3G unlocked for $250 or so when the 3GS came out. AT&T isn't letting a lot of people upgrade from their 3GS models are they? I read somewhere that they are letting customers upgrade 6 months earlier, which means 1 1/2 years for 3GS owners? What is their policy?

I figured it out myself...
1. Do regular update via iTunes
2. Use redsn0w for Jailbrake
3. Use ultrasn0w via Cydia for Unlock

it only took articles from 3 different sites... Go it working now!!!

Yeah, with their offer it's 1 1/2 year this time around. Every year I have one line that's 2 year contract is up. My line with the 3gs isn't up but the one with the 3g is. Next year the other line will be up for an upgrade.

On a selfish note does anyone have a custom iOs 4 IPSW for 3gs official carrier?

Not sure what I am doing wrong. Have iPhone 3GS.

Tried to use pwnage tool. Was stuck in recovery mode and could not get out so I had to update to iOS4.

Tried to do it again but I keep on getting an error or it gets stuck on "preparing iphone for restore"

Any ideas?

tried this on my JB 3GS on 3.0 and it didn't work. I tired creating several custom IPSW's via pwnagetool and got the 1600 errors. I'm not on 4.0 non JB and wanted to see if i should keep trying?

I've done this several time before so i know i didn't miss a step. Ideas anyone?

Keep trying. I kept getting 1600 errors and even a 2001 but it finally worked. Make sure you use pwnage tool to put your phone in dfu mode. Good luck!

sorry - I'm on 4.0 now. Do you know if this will work if I tried creating a custom IPSW?

I wasn't getting cellular network and I wasn't getting the Carrier option in the top settings screen after pwn'ing. I also wasn't getting the Cellular Data Network option in the General -> Network screen.

I'd hit the defaults through simple mode in Pwnage so I went back through and this time unticked the option to Activate the Phone. (I'm on a iPhone contract therefore able to legitimately activate via iTunes.)

The difficult part was getting the restore to run. I tried both recovery and DFU modes but it kept sitting on "Waiting for iPhone to connect" after I'd got the Apple and the status bar on the iPhone. This timed out after about 15 minutes with a 1603. Fiddling about I was also able to get 1600 and 1604 errors. I tried both a pwn'd and virgin 3.1.2 ipsw but still got the same results. I even tried using iboot via irecovery but to no avail.

The solution to the 160x errors? I simply rebooted my MacBook as a last resort, started the restore again in rescue mode and it went straight through. I used the custom IPSW with the Activate the Phone option disabled which allowed me to activate the phone through iTunes.

Happy days! Hope this helps someone.

So, just to check, I have:

iPhone 1st gen
3.13 (7E18)
04.05.04 Modem FW
JB with Spirit
Don't know bootrom, but it is a near-launch 1G and just got JB roughly 2 weeks ago

iPhone 3G
3.13 (7E18)
05.12.01 Modem FW
JB with Spirit
Don't know bootrom, but it is a launch 3G and just got JB roughly 2 weeks ago

Is there a way for me to upgrade or downgrade the OS and re-JB and unlock these phones? Picking up a new iPhone 4 in the morning and would like to sell them if I can.
