What type of people are getting the 3GS over the 4?

People who shouldn't be getting an iPhone at all.

Or someone who wants the iOS experience but doesn't want to worry about shorting out their antennaes by holding their phone "wrong."

To the OP

What a bunch of wild generalizations and assumptions. You pose different "viewpoints" and then ask why one would choose one over the other as if you've exhausted the possibilities, can't fathom why or whatnot?

wow.

Clueless much?

After I bought my iPhone 4, I sold my 3GS for $300. I then used that money to buy a a new 32GB 3GS at BestBuy for $199 and a new 8GB 3GS for $99. Don't regret it one bit. Plus I have a full warranty on all three phones again.

Well clearly you're an idiot and shouldn't own any iPhones ;) ;) ;)

If iOS 4.1 doesn't address the prox sensor issue, I'll either leave it until iP5 or go for a 3GS.

My current 3G is great as a phone and the apps are good. I fancy iOS 4 but not on a 3G.

Problem is, I firstly need a phone. From what I've seen, friends and on-line threads, the iP4 in it's current state is too much of a gamble. Good apps, looks good. As a phone? meh.

It really is a crapshoot. I use a case with my iPhone 4 and would always have used one no matter what. I did test without a case and I was only able to duplicate a 1 bar drop at the testing location which probably is a bit less than what Anandtech found in their testing (a little bit under 19 dBm drop).

However, I just was bit twice today with the proximity sensor issue which in the previous 10 days of use I never encountered. Was I holding things differently? I don't think so.

Yeah, there's just no truth to that.

I walked into the Apple store. I placed one finger over "the gap" on iPhone 4, it went from 4 Bars to 1/No Service.

I lightly cupped my friend's iPhone 3GS, it went down from 4 Bars to two to three Bars. (Same location as the iPhone 4).

So yes, there is "truth" to the that. Hence Apple placing the gap between the two antennaes; they didn't put the gap their for laughs, it serves a purpose.

$100 extra for:

Retina display
8 more gb of storage
256 more mb of ram
2 more megapixel camera
Front facing camera
A4 chip
Larger battery
Gyroscope
Thinner iPhone
Free case

I'd definitely pay that extra $100 for the iPhone 4.

Why didn't you just get more iPhone 4's? You locked yourself into two year contracts because you didn't want to shell out an extra $100? I don't quite understand the purpose of what you did.

You do know there is no such thing as a 199 dollar iPhone right? Actually they cost around 600 or 700 hundred dollars, which what most normal people in other countries pay. Mainly the US operators have duped a willing to be duped public into thinking phones cost only a couple hundred dollars. Your post is a testament to this line of thinking.

I don't need nor want three iPhone 4s. I already have one. The 3GS phones are more than adequate for what I am using them for and there is no need to have upgraded those lines to iPhone 4s for allot more money.

Why question what other people do with their money?

Of course it's not $199 though that's what it cost me at BB. I wasn't duped, a two year contract helps pay the full cost of the iPhone. By your logic, you too were duped by buying your iPhone.

Because you're making bad fiscal decisions. I never said you couldn't do what you want with your money, though.

The speed alone is worth 100 bucks. It's considerably faster than 3GS.

No. It is not

I have compared my ip4 to my brother's new 3gs. Essentially the same performance and cannot tell a difference in speed

BTW, two of my brothers and both my parents opted for the 8gig 3gs over the new iphones

What? I know many people prefer the form on the 3gs over the new one, don't care for the new features, and would like to save 100 bucks.

Who are you to judge?

Very true. The only speed differences I have noticed is on 3G upload speeds. Download speeds are the same and so are the speeds in opening apps and anything else on the 3GS.

Ok so someone buying a new 3GS for $99 is making a bad fiscal decision over someone buying a new 32GB iPhone for $299? Wow, just wow.

Well, you bought a year-old phone in a 3GS for the same price as a 16GB iPhone 4 and then bought a $99 3GS instead of a $199 iPhone 4. Did you consider resale values? You'll make back most, if not all of the money you "saved" from cheaping out, and that's not even including the fact that you and your familiy will be able to use a far better phone for the time you own them. I'm not trying to insult you, just relating my opinion. Stop being personally offended.

Because I'm just providing my opinion. I hate this response that people make. Who are you to judge me on me judging? See, I can do it too! When you put stuff on a forum you open yourself up to other people commenting on it. That's the deal, that's discussion.

Also, worrying about $100 upfront on a contract that is going to cost thousands of dollars over the coming years is troubling. If you're worried about $100, you shouldn't be getting into a longterm smartphone contract. That was my point.

I don't care about resale values. Other than the original 3GS that I sold for $300, I still have every single iPhone I have ever purchased including the original iPhone back in 2007. I even bough three original 16GB iPhones just because I could and they were on the Pick a Plan which I could cancel at any time.

I would of gotten a iphone4 16gb for $199 and I can see why the $99 dollars on a 8gb 3gs to make your $300 u sold the old 3gs for. but Your the smart one.

Are you the arbiter of fiscal decisions. Sorry... but if SpaceKitty finds value in the phones she bought and that's her PREFERENCE it's not a bad fiscal decision.

A bad fiscal decision would be spending more money on something she doesn't need just because she can.

Your logic is a bit backwards.

You probably also think that it's stupid for someone to buy a kindle when they can buy an iPad which does so much more... right?

Again - you're making a backwards case. $100 is $100. And why spend it if you don't have to or WANT to? That's financially stupid.

Who said anything about anyone being WORRIED about the money. Just because I have money to burn doesn't mean I need to spend more on something that won't be of greater value to me.

Wow.
