please tell me you dumped those SHSH blobs from the device before updating it to 6.1.6! :)
No. I have no intent on going back. I know where you're going with that, but I don't intend to jailbreak this particular iPhone or to roll it back. I need iOS 6 to use the bare minimum of what I (fuzzily) intend to do with the phone.

Well…that was fun! Restore to a January 2012 backup. Of course this was on my MBP so none of the old apps were acknowledged - although my folder setups came back (and pics of my kids at 4 and 9).

So…streaming DroneZone from the 3GS to the Mac Mini, which is sending it to the BT loudspeaker. Awesome! Just have to figure out what the phone will stream and the Mac will stream.

Oh, and apparently, I'd forgotten I bought Air Server three years ago. So, two Mac licenses. :)

@eyoungren - Many thanks for that (and sorry for going off-topic again) :)
No worries. It's Polgara, no explanation needed. :D

I found Soma FM somehow around 2001. Either iTunes on OS9 or Live 365 using the Netscape browser. Been a listener ever since.

OK. So the Mac got here yesterday in the mid afternoon. TLDR -> I spent an entire day updating it to arrive at High Sierra.

Here's the shots you may be waiting for.

2020-04-22 19.54.26.jpg2020-04-22 19.54.39.jpg2020-04-22 19.54.44.jpg

Note, just five displays right now. Waiting on an adapter. But I don't use the TV in normal routine so not a big deal at the moment.

Here's the rundown:

- Swapped in my hard drives from the Quad. Get everything connected and NO BOOT! My idiot self forgot that my boot drive was formatted APM and not GUID!

- Hook up MP to MBP via FW800 cable. Clone drive to disk image. Repartions. Clone drive back. NO BOOT!

- Well, this is probably 'cause it needs to be updated. Had the same happen with my 2006 MBP. Put in SL disk, and install.

- Okay, it boots. Deal with all the nags at login. Make sure it's updated. Time for bed. This took until 11pm.

- This morning, see what I need to flash MP 4,1 to 5,1. I need to be on El Cap. OK. I don't have El Cap and the SL app store isn't letting me get to it so I update to Yosemite. All good.

- Now the store lets me get to El Cap. Problems! El Cap says empty packages! So, I make a USB installer. It's got issues in the Mac Pro! Fine, boot from it using the MBP, attach MP via Target Disk Mode, install El Cap. Hey it installs!

- Firmware update 1. Ugh. Missed it. Try again. Bang, 4,1 is now a 5,1. Find a link to High Sierra and install. Hey it wants a firmware update! Fine…

- Install second firmware update: This time I know how long to wait and it goes fine. Reboot…

- Now actually installing High Sierra, updates after that, done with no time to spare before having to get ready to go out.

That took an entire damn day! And I just now got things more or less settled for the GUI. Still have other apps to install.

Finally, the shipping knocked a ram stick slightly loose I guess. Was showing 6GB. Reseated and it's fixed, 8GB ram. I have 32GB coming, but the Post Office can't seem to find my address!

The vendor that shipped the Mac did a really good job. Absolutely NO BENT HANDLES! Really happy with that.

Note: This post entered using Vivaldi on my 2009 Mac Pro!

Whoa! Don't you feel you missed out on the whole shipping experience by not getting completely destroyed handles? It's kind of traditional - a rite of passage if you like. :)
My Power Mac G4 is a DA in a QS case, probably from the board swap that was common with the QS models. I guess I've sort of missed a rite of passage by not having to diagnose a QS and then doing a DA board swap instead, haven't I? ;)

LOL. I already had that experience. A member here sent me a 2.3 DC G5 some time ago and it arrived out of whack. Which put me on the hunt for a case. Fortunately, there was a local fellow selling the EXACT same 2.3 DC G5 for $50. So I bought it and transferred all the necessary parts. The bent G5 is serving as a part machine.

@eyoungren - Are you going to put an SSD in there? As for your adventures - per aspera ad astra. :)
No, no SSD. I don't feel I really need one. In laptops, sure. I've been transitioning my laptops to this but spinners are good enough for my desktops I think.

Right now, I've got two drive bays to fill. :D

Are those just the basic NVMe adapters and are you finding heat generation ok with them?

Brilliant work @eyoungren! Your persistence has paid off.

How are you finding your workflow on the new rig? I imagine the speed difference over the Quad G5 is like night and day.

Do you think you’ll bring it up to Mojave?
Well, there is more work to be done. Today (yesterday actually) I got a lot of my apps either installed or updated. There's a couple of things I'm having problems with (Facetime and Messages do not want to log me in, despite me being logged in to iCloud, iTunes and the App store) as well as some other small stuff. Mostly though I'm back to where I was.

The adjustment is realizing that I don't have to go over to the MBP anymore to watch video online or movies, etc. The biggest thing for me was knowing that I got Dropbox back and no longer have to connect to another Mac or PC to use it.

Other than app load times the response is not much faster than the old Quad. However, I have 16GB of ram on that Mac and right now the MP only has 8GB. I imagine things will improve once my additional ram arrives.

What I wanted was the next leap forward. PowerPC has been my base for so long, now I have a machine that puts me into a spot where I can actually use more modern stuff while expecting to be able to use it for a while. At least until Dropbox kills support for High Sierra, LOL

I am going to Mojave, but I need a Metal compatible card - which I do not currently have. Will see what funding looks like in the future. Until then, I've got the MBP and the Mini on Mojave and the MP is running XtraFinder.

Lastly, there will eventually be a CPU upgrade - to take advantage of the fact that this MP is now a 5,1. Which will then mean more ram. These are two purchases I'm not prepared for at this time.

I've just made some huge jumps though, so overall I'm happy. 10.5 to 10.13. That's eight versions of OS X. Adobe CS4 to CC20 - don't know how many versions between those two but I know it's a lot.

Actually got to use Photoshop CC20 last night to make a crop for a photo my wife needed so was happy about that.

Real nice system so far I think.

Those actually are older AHCI drives. One came from an MBA, one from a trashcan.

Since this boots SL, I need at least one AHCI drive. Now that we have the firmware "blessing" from Apple to do NVME, I may try one, but of course it will be for HiSi.

I guess this shows just how outdated my sense of technology is...

When I saw those, the only name that came to my mind was "Hardcard" despite knowing what NVMe is and the fact that I know you can get PCI(e) cards for that :p

The first computer I used was a Tandy 1000a hand-me-down from my dad that had one :) ..

Right now, I have a 1000TX that also has one...I need to get it going.

According to my brief research, Apple's AHCI SSDs have a non-standard M.2 connector, so you need both an adapter to "normal" M.2 and an M.2-to-PCIe card. Is that correct?

I had issues a while back with this. Messages and Facetime simply refused to let me sign in. Turns out Apple had placed a block on my Apple ID. I never found out why they had placed the block on me, but it only took an email to Apple support to get it cleared up and I could then sign into Messages freely. So that might be worth a shot for you.

PCIe adapter cards exist that Apple's proprietary AHCI interface plugs into. I can't tell you exactly what they are-the way I buy this stuff is ask @LightBulbFun what to buy and he sends me a link to an Ebay auction :) . I bought these a while ago.

I splurged and bought a 512gb "SUBX" AHCI drive for my 2015 Retina. Since those computers handle NVMe really well also, one of my plans is to stick maybe a 1TB NVMe in it and bump the 512gb down to the MP. That does require a small port adapter to fit to the MBP.
