Hence "officially" ;)

I might upgrade at some point, but for now I'm happy with El Cap. :)
Try Catalina on it :)

So, as expected, the video cards are here. That's what happens when your eBay seller is cross town.

Note, the Mac you see above is not mine. It's the work MBP I keep referring to.

Is this a 2015 MacBook Pro - I see the MagSafe 2 just thought I'd ask.

Congrats on your new 4,1 they are really good, I’ve been running mine for the last 4+ years without much issue.

As mentioned you’ll need a metal supported GPU if and when you upgrade to Mojave. I run a GTX680 (2GB) in my 4,1, the versions made for PC/Windows are fairly cheap 2nd hand. They won’t show the boot screen but you can easily fix that by flashing them to turn them into a Mac version of a GTX680.

I followed this thread, a lot of info in there and if I remember correctly they also supply the Mac ROM you would need should you decide to go down this route:

Yep. I got hired about a year after the bosses decided that they would upgrade everyone from towers to MBPs. This Mac used to belong to the designer before me who was there about a year. Everyone brings their Macs home with them each night - which is how I happen to have it here and it's not at work, despite my being furloughed and haven't having worked in three weeks.

@raymanster - The 680 is a bit of a power hog though isn't it, especially with four screens connected to it.

@eyoungren - In case you're planning to hook up your 4K TV to the MP - the GT120 is limited to 30 Hz at that resolution and you'll need an active DP-to-HDMI adapter for this to work (DVI-to-HDMI won't).

On a side note…I have an iPhone 3GS coming as well. My very first iPhone, I finally replaced it. The previous one was my sister's but a friend, @RedCroissant, needed a phone so I gave that one to him.

I thought I'd show my lineup though as it stands…btw, mods I am typing this into this thread because I can sync them with my Mac.

I have a handful that can officially run Catalina, and every one has been dropped back to Mojave. Specifically, I've run it on my 2012 13" MBP and 2012 MBA. My 2012 15"(which is my primary computer) and 2015 13"(which is my travel computer) have never had it.

Mojave may well become the new SL for me...I can see myself holding out on it for a while(although High Sierra is still my primary OS).

That's what I've heard from a lot of people. Once I get my Mac Pro (whenever that will be, idek yet xD) I'll probably have three or four different OSes on it just to cover my bases in terms of compatibility. :)

I still depend on too many 32 bit apps that will likely never be updated to actually incorporate Catalina into my workflow.

I also am a very heavy user of Dashboard, and I don't know why Apple decided to eliminate it.

My 5,1 runs SL and High Sierra.

SL is actually my primary OS as its my "hub" for a lot of legacy peripherals. I have High Sierra on it because, to the best of my knowledge, know video card exists which is compatible with both SL and Mojave.

BTW, SL booted of a PCIe SSD and on a 12 core system is slicker than snot.

Even 3 years ago, SL was still an incredibly well supported OS. Unfortunately, in 2020, it seems like every other day something else breaks. One of the more recent ones was iTunes. A few months ago, I had no trouble at all logging into the store, making purchases, or downloading previous purchases. That errors out every time I try it. I use to be able to use Slack in FF ESR 45 by using a user agent switcher to make it think I was using a newer OS, but that no longer works either.

That's too bad about things breaking in SL. I love it as well and have SL ad El Cap on my MacBook. I'll probably put SL and HS or Mojave on it for sure, maybe El Cap as well, but maybe not.

I'd love to see SL booting on that system :p

With 12 cores and 32gb of RAM, it seems to take an eternity to POST. Past POST, blink and you miss the little spinner under the Apple before the sign in screen pops up, although the overall boot takes its dear sweet time.
[automerge]1587238825[/automerge]
So similar to booting Tiger on a Power Mac G4 with maxed RAM and an SSD? POST takes forever (in this case becuase OF) but after that it's a matter of seconds to load the OS.

The 680 is actually a really good card, much much better than the 580 it replaced, and the 480 (nuclear hot plate) before it. Sadly though lacks the performance of the 5803gb model. (its close, but the 580 wins out) I have about 5 of those 680 cards, pretty much one of each flavor, and they are dead easy to flash to mac.

Though if your running the 4,1 or 5,1 its pretty hard to go past the RX580.. thats prob the best bang for buck right now for OSX. and with the latest hacks youll get a boot screen too.

Mojave is also the last stand for my intel-hardware.
Same for the mid-2012 15" nr-MBP - the last and sturdiest one that has the option to replace the harddrive/ssd.
I want to stay with HFS+ and keep downward compatibility to PPC/Tiger&Leopard.
And I want to keep my 32bit applications running ... (especially old MS Office 2008, that does very well from Tiger to Mojave)
Unfortunately the App-Store is the Orwell-foreseen "1984", and it makes macOS and iOS a juggernaut for legacy hardware.
What a shame!

I’ve not really looked at the power figures but you‘re probably right as it’s such an old card. I have an old 2006 30” Cinema display hooked up to it which I have heard is also a power hog. That combined with my Mac Pro must be helping to keep the local power company in business. Ideally I’d like to run everything off solar, maybe one day...

Nice collection you have there, I think I sold my 3GS to my wife’s colleague. It was so much better then the 3G I had before it, that was a bit of a dog IMHO. The 6s is still so capable, a family member was having configuration issues (actually user error...) with their 6s Plus yesterday so they dropped it off (contact free delivery during this lockdown!) for me to take a look. I cleaned it up and upgraded to the latest iOS 13.4.1, it‘s still so smooth and useable, amazing for a nearly 5 year old phone.

I am a fan of my lowly 1,1 quad core 3ghz (woodcrest). I definitely enjoy it but it is tied to ElCap. I picked this up back in 2017 for something stupid like 50 bucks on CL.

Got mine for an equally ridiculous price due to being the sole bidder for it on eBay. Not sure why I bid as I had no need for one at the time, but I couldn't say no at that price. I immediately flashed the firmware to MP 2,1 and pimped up the CPUs. Now running Lion and El Cap, although I will probably switch Lion with M Lion. The only drawback from my point of view is that RAM runs really hot on this - like 70ºC and up depending on ambient temperatures but otherwise, it's a very solid machine that won't give you any grief. I even picked up a Mac 5770 for £22 in a branch of Cex.co.uk because they didn't realise it was the Mac version. You definitely need that for El Cap.

Problem is, that the 1,1 is a gateway drug and I now have a 5,1 sitting next to it. I have no idea how that happened.

I went for the R9 280X as my flashed 7950 died on me. Either way, every GPU for the 2009/2010 that gives you bootscreens is going to be an energy hog. I even ended up doing a Pixlas Mod because I thought the dying 7950 wasn't getting enough juice from the system. The more frugal cards starting with the RX580 won't give you a screen out of the box and nVidia is out of the question as Apple and nVidia have fallen out again, so no more approved drivers for Mojave or later.

I do echo the earlier sentiment about the MP forum being another good one. There are some very knowledgeable and friendly bods there and let's face it, most of the posters are trying to keep a decade old machine running and relevant in the 20s. They are not going to turn around and tell you to just get a new MP. Especially not at those eye-watering prices.

Of everything you see there, only two were an actual choice. :) The iPhone 5 and the iPad.

The 4s I got from a member here for $20 as a birthday present for my son. As his first cellphone, my intent was to limit him to 4G (HSPA+) on a 2GB line. He had it for 6 months before he got my wife's old iPhone 5 (which my daughter now uses). I ended up with the 4s. My son ended up with an iPhone SE.

My wife and I had a 6 and a 6+ on Sprint in 2015. I wanted an upgrade and based on Sprint's garbage coverage and service in our area I worked it so that I got the better end of the deal - not because I really wanted the phone. When we went to T-Mobile later that year we traded them in and got the 6s and 6s+ you see here.

Early last year, someone on the T-Mobile reddit was wanting to get rid of an iPhone 4 but didn't want to recycle it if someone could use it. I got it for $20. Has a bad power button, the only device I own with a bad button.

The 4 is jailbroken on iOS 7.1.2 and the 6s and the 6s+ are jailbroken on iOS 9.0.2. I never updated them because I didn't want to lose the jailbreak. Which considering that after iOS 9.1 jailbreaks are now semi-untethered, I'm sitting pretty good with that.

The 4s and the 5 should be jailbroken but with all the issues with semi-untethered jailbreaks and signing, I haven't bothered to try and get them resigned.

The iPad is on iOS 13.

Either way, every GPU for the 2009/2010 that gives you bootscreens is going to be an energy hog.

IIRC MadVidCards used to sell a flashed Kepler 630, I don't know if the ROM is out there though. And the issue with 630s is ensuring to get a Kepler rather than a Fermi, which is why I went with a Quadro K600 (same GPU as the "good" 630) for a friend's 4,1, which works fine in Mojave.

So the iPhone 3GS came today. OMG, iOS 5.0!

Updated it to iOS 6.1.6. I have a fuzzy idea for how it will be used, but we will see what happens. Home button is a bit wonky but oh well. I can work with it.

Oh yeah. Came with the box, instructions and the Apple stickers. ;)
