Curious to see what the battery degradation long term will be like.

IIRC Oppo did a 75w fast charge, but they said you’d lose something like 30% of capacity in a year.

My XR is from release and still at 100% capacity.
It says in the article it wont have any more impact on battery degradation then the current OEM fast chargers from the box and I'm pretty sure no OEM gives you a 75 watt charger out of box.:p

That’s the important part.

As it turns out, not everyone is concerned with the technical issues and potential limitations with shoehorning 100W into a phone battery.

The minor (and usually somewhat planned) inconvenience of a battery swap at the Apple store once or twice a year for a battery that failed due to improper tolerance of the conditions it was used in

pales in comparison to the frustration of having only 10 minutes or so to quickly get as much of a charge as possible for whatever situation I may face in life. (And we all have been there.)

👏 Bravo Qualcomm for pushing tech forward for the kind of people who don’t mind getting their money’s worth with AppleCare+. It could also help fuel research into more environmentally friendly battery tech.

For now, batteries are designed to be consumable.

If Apple announced this, people would be praising and drooling.
I'm going to bring something back up that I'd otherwise let rest. It's absolutely illustrative - But, I'm not digging it up just to rub it in your face though. I'd like to discuss a tangent topic to it.

To your quote: Oh yea, it's true. You told me yourself that 120hz would absolutely cut right through your own completely unmovable stance that "no charger" means Apple is dead to you. Making you one of those bad people that should be ashamed of themselves for supporting Apple. So, everyones a hypocrite.

What is it that keeps you around Apple? Why would it take Apple excluding the power charger to actually get you to sever ties with them? Aren't there already enough good reasons to leave them?

A non-iPhone flagship running Android provides options, customization, leading edge tech, and QoL features like hassle free sideloading, SD card support, quick charging support, a *CHARGER*, and maybe a headphone jack (but the user replaceable battery - gone). I'm sure i've missed others, but these are the major points that critics call out iPhone / Apple advocates for not supporting. To your quote: would drool over and praise if they weren't blinded by fanboyism.

I mean, the critics are right, right? Anyone supporting Apple's suppression of the above is just rationalizing and working against their own best interest. You, yourself, could get 120hz on so may other non-iphones. So why does it have to be 120hz on an iPhone for you?

Reading these comments, most iOS users are either not the brightest bulbs or live in complete ignorance. Also everything Apple does is good, everything everybody else does is bad.
Sad but what can you do.

It’s amusing; it is clear that folks have not read the article in the first place or any of the previous posts in their desperation to make exactly the same comment already made 20 x over

It literally says in the article it’s reducing the temperature by 10° C compared to other technologies.

I miss the days when Apple led the market with innovation.

Laws of physics are laws of physics and that's gonna be a damn hot phone.

Literally none of that has anything to do with ... well ... anything. Try again, please.

Gotta love most of the comments... what a bunch of haters ;)
If Apple came up with this (or at least implemented it) you would all call it the BEST THING EVER (beside sliced bread).
I guess, no charger at all is better. Right? Right? :p🤣

Too much marketing hyperbole in the report for me...trying to convince me I need it and should buy it.

And in real life I will use it how many times - not many, if any.

Also I wonder when the regulators will force phone makers to provide customer replaceable batteries so we don't have to keep buying a new phone.

Honestly, in the RC model scene with LiPo batteries, you can charge them up fully within 15 minutes no problem. The battery's inner resistance only goes up significantly above 50% charge, so the first 50% can be charged with a lot of power without degrading the battery much.

Personally, I'D love the option to chose the charge rate on the phone whenever I hook up the charger and not always fast-charge it every time. Just a slider on the lock screen for the average charge rate with the estimated times till 50%, 80% and 100% charge. The iPhone learns when I unplug it in the morning anyway so it could default to the appropriate charge rate. If I unexpectedly have to get up earlier, I could still slide it to max so it just charges as quickly as it can.

People here: this will kill the battery in 3 months.
Reality: this won't heat the battery anymore than current fast charging, if anything, less...
People here: I don't buy it, if it's 4 times faster, it will destroy the battery 4 times faster...
Reality: it's a new technology using new split batteries with parallel charging, that won't heat each battery more, but will be faster
People: don't read, keep commenting...

PS If you want to preserve battery lifespan as much as possible, avoid heat, so don't fast charge, don't wireless charge, don't leave your phone under the sun, don't tether your phone to your laptop while keeping it plugged in. Also, avoid deep discharges, so don't discharge your phone completely before recharging it.

If it degrades battery a little faster.. oh well. It's worth it. My OnePlus 8 Pro doesn't last as long as my iPhone but I prefer the battery on it much more because a quick 10-15 minute charge and I'm near 100% again. If my iPhone gets low is takes forever to get to a decent level again.

Now you ruined all the fun by explaining it in an easy way....

It actually degrades the battery quite a bit faster. Not a problem if you change your phone annually, but at $1k/pop few do. If you’re in a situation where 1. you forget to charge overnight, and 2. the extra several minutes really matters, you’re the person for whom a battery pack is perfect. They’re cheap, pocketable (even while charging), and you won’t be frying your phone’s battery. Also, you should read about management of rechargeable batter health; keeping it at or near 100% is not good practice.
