This would be amazing for me and my sales team!

I don't see the benefit for group chat. Why would I want some stranger following what I've to say to my only friend (my mom)?

What about businesses? Schools for projects? Or if you want to simply chat to friends together?

Point is: some people on android MAY be using Hangouts, or they MAY be using Duo... or of course, both/neither.
With Apple- you know for certain that everyone that owns an iPhone, has iMessage.
I was just poking fun at the fact that the fragmentation in Android is so bad that apparently, to get the features of a rumored iMessage update, you'd have to use an older Google app that never really took off (& make sure the other parties all are using it as well), eschewing their "latest & greatest".

They will take care of the fragmentation to an extent little by little. Google can take a page out of Microsoft's book with having different OEMs, similar interphases, and control updates.

This needs to be under every mention of Facetime.

What are you basing that opinion on?? I have seen ZERO evidence pointing at that, even remotely... the latest iteration of their apps, Allo & Duo apparently aren't replacements for Hangouts... they're in addition to. They don't seem to be condensing their app offerings at all.
I believe those are separate/optional downloads, and NOT baked into Android N whatsoever (differing heavily from iMessage & FaceTime in that aspect).
Further, don't the VAST majority of Android phones come with some custom version of messaging installed as the default?

About that photo on the article, like there's reception strong enough to FaceTime. Wait, like there's even WiFi up there.

You mom talks to you?! Now iMessage makes more sense... I've only ever used iMessage between my iPhone and iPad and thought it was the boringest game ever...

This is just a start.

Uh, like google hangout, or Skype, or zoom, or . . one of 30 different services? I guess if they can tie it into the ecosystem.

If I'm reading that correctly, it's saying that all myriad versions of custom texting apps that Android OEM's can & do make default on their handsets; have to adhere to a few similarities like all having a "block this #" option.
Ummm, ok. Not even CLOSE to what we are talking about! It doesn't say, for example, that Allo needs to come preinstalled & be selected as the default (which would give it parity to iMessage, in that respect).
So, there will still be dozens of competing texting apps on Android... with wildly different options and abilities, and there is definitely nothing that the public is aware of, coming down the pipeline that will change that at all.
This is due to Android's "openness". They literally can't suddenly mandate that their texting app is the one that MUST be used (like Apple can). That would fly in the face of the "100% customizable" reputation they've earned.

Skype already said there is a back door and I trust Timmy on this.

Yes that's what I meant. Microsoft and Google are upfront on what they do and allow. Apple hides it behind clever marketing . Its delusion if you truly believe any big multinational isn't doing what law enforcement can compel them to do

I don't believe there are any back-doors to facetime that would allow it to be decrypted on the fly so that your conversations can be intercepted illegally. Other than the usual internet memes there is no proof that apple hands over user data without any legal paperwork.

All companies have to comply with rules and regulations and all of them have privacy policies with regard to law enforcement, but not all of them leave the front door opened.

Oh really?

Huh, didn't realize this wasn't possible already. Didn't iChat allow group video conversations?
Up to three people plus a shared whiteboard. Really an amazing product that just worked. My coworkers and I had a blast using it. You could use photo booth F/X on your video feed if you wanted to mess with the other attendees, LOL. It was great!
