How else would Apple get people to pay for their overpriced garbage when their old phones are working perfectly fine and surely can handle this update no problem? Typical of today's Apple.

You’d be the same person crying if iOS 13 slowed down your device loads.

“They should have kept it on iOS 12 and not let you update, iOS 12 worked fine! Typical Apple, how else would they get people to pay for their overpriced garbage.”

Also, it literally says “questionable rumour” in the article title. How about ease off on the vitriol until something’s announced, huh?

Apple wants to do something anti-consumer like this to force them to buy new iPhones?

I'll just switch to Android. (Ugh, damnit - my wife just bought me an Apple Watch for Christmas... and I like it... maybe I'll just buy a used iPhone from not Apple. Keeps it all working and avoids rewarding Apple for this behavior.)

Why are people already overreacting? Saying this is another ploy for Apple to rip us off? The title says it all. It’s a questionable rumor at best and basically goes against everything Apple has done for many years which is to continue to support 5 generations of iPhone. Why should that be different with iOS 13? I can see the 5S and even the 6/6 Plus as the 1 GB of ram may be problematic.

Funny how people here are ready to accept this totally unsubstantiated rumor as fact, and pummel Apple for a major fail, rather than figure the source to be desperate for clicks, which has a *much* higher probability of being the case.
Well I think it has to do with Apple's current track record. Missing deadlines, people stealing internal documentation, screwing up facetime and even more.. The thing is people use to expect Apple to be perfect, and their leadership demanded the same. Can't say the same about their leadership anymore. I'm curious to see if they really do drop this many devices, frankly I just can't see them doing it. But who knows?

I don't mind not having dark mode :)
Anyways the best way to make people to upgrade is to have great products at reasonable price not doing these dirty tricks.

5s for sure, and that’s fair - it’s from 2013. I think A8 devices could also get cut, as those all have 1 GB RAM (iPad Air 2 is an A8x with 2 GB RAM, so I don’t know about that). It’s the A9 devices I can’t see. The A9 remains very capable, and they have 2 GB RAM. Moreover, the iPad 5th gen came out in 2017 and was the current model into early 2018, and that has an A9.

For those who are saying this is to get people to upgrade - you can’t complain when iOS updates slow down older devices AND expect 5+ years of support. There are trade offs.

MacRumours should refrain from reporting unverified rumours...

So, aren’t the majority of rumors technically ‘unverified’? Then MacRumors wouldn’t really much have a point to exist if they didn’t report rumors that were always verified. Given this report with iOS 13, it’s not likely the 6S would be discontinued, but it’s an interesting read.

Looks like someones Cooked up a new way to generate revenue! Can't battery change your way out of software deprivation.

edit: deprecation, but I'll keep the original.
Last time I checked a phone isn’t required to be running the latest software in order for it to work. Not being able to run iOS 13 won’t brick anyone’s phone.

What better way to drive up sales than to obsolete a bunch of old models prematurely?

everybody here knows damn well there are millions of people who will just say "oh well" and go buy a new one.

Even the most altruistic companies will throw their customers under the bus when the stockholders start calling for blood.

All of you act like this is new. Apple drops support every year to force upgrades. This happened under Uncle Steve too. Arbitrarily drop support for perfectly capable devices, putting a gun to your head to upgrade to the latest and greatest, which of course featured inferior tech.

Remember when Uncle Steve kept using Core2Duos in MacBooks?

My take:iphone 5s and 6 /plus support will be dropped for iOS 13. Because of the new features of iOS 13 , and the fact that the 6/plus and 5s have 1gb of ram.
But perhaps apple will announce that they’ ll keep updating the 5s and 6 with securities updates this year but no new features for these iPhones, i guess.

So, we have had support for these devices for 5 to 6 years, it seems logical that this is the next step, apple has to move on, and can’ t make all new features work on these devices. These older iPhones won’ t suddenly stop working after the release of iOS 13, and if apple can occasionally release updates for security when necessary, i really don’ t see a problem.

And IF apple drops support for the 5s, my guess is that they’ ll release an updated SE as an alternative for people that don’ t want to loose the small form factor, but don’ t want to break the bank either.
They could also offer a new upgrade program for the people to get an iphone 7 or iPhone 8 at a discount when they trade in their 5s or 6.

But dropping the SE or 6s, no... not this year.

The phones won't stop working...they just won't get the latest free upgrade of the operating system. Before Apple there were no updates to anything by the carriers. A lot of Android phones and tables don't ship with the current version of their software and they may not ever get a current version. Be thankful you get updates for a few years. I wonder if everyone would complain if they were charged for the update.

Apple is pushing harder for people to upgrade.

It’s unfortunate that the company can’t sell phones by innovation any more.
So Apple allows new software on much older devices and people complain about their device being too slow. Then you all come here and claim Apple is intentionally slowing down devices to get people to upgrade. Just stop with the nonsense already. Who knows if this rumor is true. If it is it says to me iOS 13 will have significant enough changes that the experience on older devices will not be a good experience. Better to cut those devices off than the update making for a poor experience with no way to revert back.
