I have the tethering plan from AtT on my secondary phone.

I still use mywi.... I am still getting the text on the phone that has TETHERING.

Go figure!

WTF

that is strange

guys can we keep the offtangent comments off this thread, at least until we can figure out how AT&T is catching people tethering

I wonder if perhaps tethering uses old Cingular Wap settings ?

I'm guessing AT&T won't put up with this for more than a couple of times without some sort of severe repercussions.
yeah but i don't really see how they can "force" you onto the tether plan but I guess we will find out. I think this is really more of a way for att to weed customers off of the unlimited plans in favor of tiered data. I think they are trying to limit the bandwidth used more than trying to make a little extra money.

Umm but I dont even use my allowance 2gb on my iphone....why do I have to buy 20 bucks more of data when I'm not gonna use it all on the ipad? I would only tether occasionally, cuz 80% of the time I'm around wifi....
not that i agree with what att does, but your ToS say you have data for your phone, not for any device you choose to use.

Well he wasn't saying that he should be able to keep unlimited and tether. He is saying why can't he have some kind of plan to have his 2GB of data with tethering instead of having 4GB with tethering since he only uses 1-1.5 GB at most. Which I can agree for people who tether because not all people who tether use 4GB

well, att doesn't offer such a plan

but like i said, if they switch you to the tethering plan, you can always call and cancel it so you really have nothing to lose if you tether on the 2gb plan...

Just thought that I'd post a quick update on my status as an AT&T MyWi tethering user:

I used to tether fairly often (at least 3 or 5 times a week for web browsing for several hours), and now I still use it once every couple of weeks for a few minutes, and I still have yet to receive a notice from AT&T. I'm guessing that I've already been flagged and they just haven't gotten to me yet, but I'm still surprised that I haven't gotten anything yet.

I am in the same boat as you.

I tether infrequently, about 10-20 minutes
every few days, staying around 2-3GB usage
per month.

They haven't gotten to me yet, either, but I
imagine it's just a matter of time.

No second message yet...

My guess is they'd just kick you as a customer.

ATT Bullies

On the phone with att as i type this. Last billing period att told me to stop tethering, wasn't tethering. a comprimise reached, limit data use and use wifi and they gave me 7500 rollover min. to compensate using voip. Made it thru was hard. new billing period started called to add second line, the bomb. They are still threating to change data plan becuase they say im tethering. A DAMN LIE i never was. So now on the phone with att and they say their trying to staighten it out. 1st problem they say is when i sync to itunes its considered tethering and to put phone in airplane mode. What a load of ******.
on hold again, will follow up later.

Received a txt over a month ago saying they updated my plan to the $45 tethering plan, but as of yet I still have unlimited.

Lol yes I have. We FaceTime all the time with 3G Unrestrictor. Got HBO Go and will stream all day til the battery dies.

Ok, iTransmission and 3G Unrestrictor have helped ease the loss of tethering. I'm not as disappointed now.

The problem is that my work has a massive firewall and it's nice to be able to get files through my phone. As long as I have iFile/iTransmission... FTW.

I tried to download the over 20MB Yahoo messenger on 3G but AT&T stopped me. --- Installed 3G Unrestrictor and blammo!

Thank you thank you

They texted me twice - once saying I was tethering. I e-mailed them and denied it. They responded back nicely but insisted that I was tethering (I was, but pretended not to even know what it was).

Few weeks later I got another one. The "We've noticed that you've continued to enjoy, so we plan on switching..." I emailed them back again insisting I had no idea what tethering was and if any changes were made to my plan I would be VERY upset and probably switch carriers and that these threatening texts were irritating me. They NEVER replied to this email (which I found was odd...)

So far it's 2 full paid billing cycles later and I haven't been switched, but I wouldn't be surprised if I were.

Sorry for the delay in following up. Will after a 2 hour stint on the phone with att, their finale answer was at this point just put my phone in airplane mode when syncing. So until the next round of ************ from att i'l be happily downloading no less than 10 gigs a month just because they don't like and i know it. I don't have a real need to tether, which i'm glad. Att is really the network to use the iphone on. I did some quick comparison between verizon and att, no way i would go to Verizon for iPhone. So i'll hold on as long as i can to att unlimited wild ride.

^ are you serious? How in the world can they consider syncing your phone to be tethering? Especially considering it's one of the most basic, and actually an essential feature since the iPhone won't work without at least an initial setup/sync..... What a bunch of morons!

So according to that report every user on AT&T who syncs their phone w/o enabling airplane mode is using unauthorized tethering and at risk of losing their unlimited plan? What a crock, I tell ya, if they try to change my plan over some BS like that, I'll be switching to VZW the same day!

...who no longer has unlimited plans. You would just be in a lose-lose situation because you'd pay an ETF.

i still have unlimited data.... download 600gbs + this year.

i stopped tethering these last 2 months since that 4-3rdwarning though

how is it a lose lose situation? I am not under contract with ATT, I don't have to pay an ETF to leave them, and if I can't have unlimited data on either network, I'd personally rather be on the network with better coverage, and the one who has a substantial LTE network rolled out.

Actually, there is an article (you can search for it on cultofmac.com) that states the AT&T 4G will probably beat the pants off of the Verizon. But it is only speculation.

Also, Verizon does not offer rollover minutes which makes the AT&T plan a little more valuable.

However, reception is the bottom line. Whichever you think is going to give you the best coverage is the one to go with.

I have heard the same things, but I am seriously doubting it now. First off, real world tests from VZW LTE are beating Lab tests of ATT LTE in terms of speed. Also, ATT is launching with 5 markets, and plans to have 15 by the end of the year. VZW launched with almost 40 markets, and will have 175 by the end of the year.

Rollover has never once been beneficial to me, my minutes all just end up expiring after not being used for one year. I guess it is helpful to those who often are right around their minute allotment, but I think the vast majority of people probably just end up never using their rollover minutes.

The thing that sucks about reception is that it is really based on your location. ATT may be way better in some areas, while verizon or sprint excel in others. Luckily, both are pretty good in my area so for me it comes down to plans, phones, and prices which is why I chose att for the iphone years ago. Now that they are no longer the only carrier, I can look to moving my service elsewhere. I really wish sprint would get the iPhone because they still offer unlimited data and have the cheapest plans.

Been 3 billing cycles since I received the txt informing me that my plan had been updated to the 45 tethering one, but I still have unlimited.

I've rarely gone over 2gb since I switched from Sprint (4 years) to AT&T for the iphone but I still keep my unlimited plan just in case. I do come close most months though. Sprint reception was overall more solid and consistent but the data speeds are about 1/3 of what I get on average on AT&T. Pricing would be the same in my case as well. I guess there's always hope for a verizon LTE iphone 5/6.
