I need some help!

A few weeks ago as I tried to print an Excel spreadsheet I got a kernel panic. Each time I rebooted and tried again same thing. After a lot of troubleshooting I finally did an archive and install of Tiger. Since then a lot of things have remained messed up. One of which is I cannot open .VOB files in Quicktime. I was hoping this update would fix the problem but it didn't. Short of doing an erase and install are there any suggestions to fix my Quicktime (and my whole system). If not I'll try to wait (despite needing to hard boot about 3 times a day) for 10.4.3 (anyone want to guess when that will be). And if that doesn't fix it I'm going to an erase and install.

Thanks everyone.

Is it me, or are menus and everything just FASTER than before?!

Also, iTunes 5 supports VBR AAC! W00t!

Having ordered a 4GB iPod nano, I guess I'll be making tests and then re-compressing all my CDs again (from AAC 128kbps to VBR AAC whatever kbps)

Edit: I'm wondering if VBR AAC is supported on all iPods?!

Edit 2: either there's something I don't understand, or VBR files are actually bigger than CBR ones... (just made a test: CBR 2.8MB, VBR 3.0MB ?!)
Great, now I am going to have to reimport my library...

I have 7.0.1.
You need to buy a new pro key only if you are upgrading from QuickTime 6 or before to Quicktime 7 or 7.0.1 or 7.0.2.

You won't need a new pro key if you are upgrading from 7.0 to 7.0.2 or (as in your case) upgrading from 7.0.1 to 7.0.2.

It'd be nice if this fixed the incompatibility with Shoutcast (IIRC) that causes most of the NPR stations on RabbitRadio to go out after 10 seconds. Crossing fingers...

Screwed up Apple Lossless?!

Is it me (or my file), or is Apple Lossless playback now full of "snap, crackle and pop"?!

Downloaded and was about to install when i got a nice warning that i would have to buy a new QT pro key.

As i didn't "buy" mine in the 1st place i think i'll wait a while, cough limewire

Whatever WMP does, QT should.

I don't want to spend £15 to save a QT film trailer

VBR AAC

Sorry to sound like a idiot, but what are the benefits of VBR AAC??

Currently running QT 7.0.1

Anyone else having this problem?
The message I saw said that a new key would be needed if I was running QuickTime 5 or 6. My QT 7 reg codes continued working fine after the upgrade.

There are legal ways of achieving the same thing. Find out the url of the movie, then copy it to the download folder, or paste into the url bar and option-return to download it.

Oh, and if you already have a QT 7 Pro key, then nothing will change.

So far, it makes files bigger...

Starting from an Apple Lossless file:

- CBR 96kbps: 3.6MB
- VBR 96kbps: 3.9MB

- CBR 128kbps: 4.7MB
- VBR 128kbps: 5.0MB

Also, VBR is only supported for 96, 128, 160, 192 and 256 kbps.

And lastly, it bugs me off that iTunes displays stuff like "3,6MB" instead of "3.6MB" like I told OS X.

Edit: also, scrolling is a LOT SLOWER than before, especially if you got columns beyond the display (horizontal scrollbar displayed). :(

I checked one of my files in .aiff and it sounded fine (if I'm not mistaken about this being lossless).

And RabbitRadio *does* work, yay! KCRW and KEXP will be quicker to access now. :)

Well, AIFF is lossless, but I was specifically talking about Apple Lossless (average 2:1 compression with no data loss).

I'm wondering if my original CD rip is any good, I'll have to test my rips again I guess.

Just a question about updating applications in general - would these point release packages be essentailly 'combo' updaters? So if I update from, say, 7.0.1 to 7.0.2, and keep the package, can I use the same package to update a 7.0.0 or even 6.0.0 to 7.0.2?

Does that apply to things like all the iLife software, and applications in general? (I know you need a proper combo updater when skipping point releases for the OS).

Basically, I normally keep the packages, and want to know if I can trash 7.0.1 package, but still update to 7.0.2 on a reinstall.

Anyone know for sure?

Thanks in advance.

You will only need a new pro key if you are doing a major upgrade, i.e. from 6.x.y to 7.x.y. When QT 7 came out, I was sunk for a while, until a nice person lent me a key for a short while (THANK YOU!!!). I now own a QT7 key. Suck's when a major upgrade crashes you editing setup.

The only weird thing this install did was to have QT start on boot. Weird.

Perhaps the bit rate setting for VBR is the MINIMUM bit rate used.

i hope im not the only one that hates the new itunes interface. why would they get rid of the brushed metal look? it looks horrible now.

Funny. I was thinking the opposite. I always thought that the Apple was trying to rice out OS X with the brushed metal look.

Check out my Bling bling OS!! I got my chrome on with iTunes yo.

Seriously. The inconsistencies in the interface color schemes NEEDS to be cleaned up. Makes it look like someone with a serious case of A.D.D. is in charge of X's GUI design. Jumping from metal for some apps to gray on others to, of all things, wood. Someone needs to take their Ritalin and settle on a color scheme and I personally am quite happy with this.

Metal is just fugly IMHO. Maybe they were trying to make it blend in with the PowerBooks or something but it didn't work. *shrugs*

Just when I was starting to get used to brushed metal

When I first saw the brushed metal interface a couple of years ago I thought it was garish. Now I've gotten used to it. It does seem like something is missing now.

No big deal though.

I personnally loved the brush metal look. The new Mail is horrible, what a waste of space under the three dot (close, min, max), the color is ugly. iTune on the other have a much better look, more dark, more grade, more metal. It's a little difference that make iTune look good vs Mail.

What I like less is the corner is becoming more and more squared, not sure I real like that. Soon it will look like old ugly classic!

I hope the new iPod nano in black is what Apple have in mind for the look of OS X, a more darker theme, abandon the mail design and move for a standard one like iTune 5. But I wish they would include a theme manager in OS X so people could choose the look they prefer: Aqua, pro appz, brushed metal, plastic or dark plastic. That would be so sweet, especially with an option to make special selection per appz. I hope too see that in OSX, shapeshifter existe, but it's pricy and buggy at every system update.

breaks MATLAB...

i've always had funky issues with my MATLAB version 6.5, but since this update (quicktime and itunes) i can't start up MATLAB at all. the command window opens up, status says "initializing" and then it crashes. there's too much in the crash log; i can't sort out what it means.

The bit rate you specify is the bottom rate - iTunes will import at no lower than that rate. Therefore, there is no way your file size will be smaller. However, it does increase the quality by increasing bit rate and sound quality at points where it is needed, and doesn't where it does not. Good use of file size versus quality...:)

But don't other software packages mean VBR rates for the maximum rate?

In any case, it's nice to finally have VBR, but it sucks for not being able to use any bitrate for it (64kbps is still 44.1KHz, and could save plenty of space on, erm... a 4GB iPod nano).
