what a waste of space under the three dot (close, min, max)

This space is removable, you know. Go to View > Customize Toolbar... and just drag out the space.

Well, Well, Well. . .

I'm sure that Shamino is all cheesed off about this cause you have to restart.

Installed and restarted - everything seems to be ok here. Wish they'd add support for playing wmv files in it.....I know that wmv sucks but there are a lot of them about and I hate using Media Player and VLC doesn't play them all.

how can you not like the brushed metal look? personally i wish all apps would look like that. i do agree that there should be 1 set style(brushed, plastic, etc.). but hey, if all apps had the brushed metal look i wouldnt complain. :)

I wonder what this update is REALLY for... mabye a new codec in iTunes 5? I hate how they give the same description for every update.

You know what bugs me even more about this update? Not only the fact that certain h.264 movies have a gamma bug, but that it plays perfectly fine in any other app than Safari and QuickTime, including iTunes!

...didn't go so well

Ok... so I updated Quicktime and iTunes in one shot through updater and I restarted. It then proceeded to give me the mac 'black screen of death', which I'm guessing is a kernel panic? I rebooted as it instructed and it did it again and ever time after. I did the instructions for resetting the pmu (shift-control-option-power) and still no luck. So... what do I do now? o_o
I can't boot, so I can't check anything out. Should I grab my tiger cd and try to archive and install? I'd prefer not to lose all my data, but worse comes to worse I can format. Has anyone else had this just explode in their face? T_T;

EDIT: well... scratch that, it seems even with the Tiger install disk in the drive it won't get past the error screen. So I guess I'm screwed? It's still under the 1 year warrenty, though phone support has run out... Is there any other way to get it to boot? Or do I need to give tech support a call to dig me out of my grave?

This pales in comparison to the other updates of the day, but is good to see nonetheless. :)
It's still pale... they didn't fix the bug. Oh, oh you mean figuratively speaking.

I need some help!

A few weeks ago as I tried to print an Excel spreadsheet I got a kernel panic. Each time I rebooted and tried again same thing.
Thanks everyone.

Word crashed on opening for me after I installed Tiger. Unbeknownest to me there was an Office update available. I installed it and no problems since then.

Bad install problems

Make sure you hold down the 'C' key while booting, to boot from the CD/DVD. If it makes you feel any better, I had bad problems with this install as well (first really bad problem with any Apple update). I worked with Apple Support: I tried creating a new user (which didn't work), and I tried the Archive and Install (which didn't either). My Mac seems to be spiraling downward, as everything I try makes matters worse -- more and more things crash each time. Guess it's time for an Erase and Install. Thankfully, I have a recent backup for my data.... :(

AAC VBR

Interesting, when itunes first gained AAC people were complaining about the lack of VBR, and then there were all sorts of replies that AAC was *by nature* VBR, therefore it was always on and there was no option to turn it off...

Was that proven wrong at some point? Did someone compare a CBR and VBR file to one created by the old itunes/quicktime to see if there was a size difference?

Thanks for the reply but unfortunately I'm up to date on that front as well.

Full-screen

When will Apple bring back full-screen play to QuickTime player? It's ridiculous to make it a "Pro" feature, because its still available in the QT library and with an AppleScript you can even trick QT player into playing back full screen.

Until then I continue to use MPlayer and VLC.

Reboots are downtime?

Yes.. the horror... :p

Well. Is a computer really 'down' if it doesn't actually turn off? I mean, if the requirement for uptime is to have software running on a computer that is performing some sort of beneficial function, then Windows machines would never get beyond 0 sec. uptime. :D

weirdness

I get two help menus. Literally. right next to each other.

I also can't hear any audio on the keynote.

Strange.

that's not acceptable as an add-on, it's not even a free application! the (bloatware) media player app bundled with osx should be able to play *all* types of media files, even the propriatary crap which apple does not want to support.

the fact that Ogg Vorbis is *still* unsupported is an embarassment...

Ah.

Well.

Maybe not.

Installed and downloaded the imax trailer at 720.

Got around 2fps

And as i can't save it decided to roll back to 6.5.

... I have a large library of mpeg4 movies that played back great before I upgraded to Tiger and QT 7, now they just stutter and are imbarable. ...

I had a similar problem when I upgraded to Tiger, but then I changed "System Preferences | Energy Saver | Options | Processor Performance" from "Automatic" to "Highest" and everything plays fine now.
