Anyone else notice the slight of hand where Scott said "the in-app store will only work for paid apps" right after saying "and you can have apps like e-book readers where people purchase books within the app." Why should an e-book reader have to be paid? That doesn't make sense. Especially when they didn't announce any other way to let us give out trial version of apps. Now if we want people to get to know our interface before purchasing anything, we have to provide two separate applications! The In-App store was supposed to solve that problem! It also had the potential to solve the problem of the lack of trial-version support. Just let us sell free trial versions and after 7 days pop up a message that asks them to purchase it from within the app! That's how it works on computers - people are used to that model. I'd say this is Apple trying to push developers away from selling free apps at all. Boo.

In a way yes.

Would you like to be bombarded with ads and whatnot asking you to buy stuff from developers who make a free application but are looking to make a quick buck???

I thought not. This is where the model makes sense. :)

Can you copy and paste in Safari without selecting the predetermined blocks of text? Also, how do you change formatting of the text after pasting? Seriously why did they take that long to implement copy and paste? In that long of a time, I would've expected something more sophisticated. Same with landscape mode? They're touting them it as a new feature when it was just a UI inconsistency to begin with. The rest is cool though.

This announcement made my day for just one reason: landscape in everything! Thank the Lord! It's baffled me that landscape mode only worked in certain apps. But Mail will actually be a pleasure to use now. And finally Notes will sync! Woohoo! Yeah, I know most people will say, "It's about time," but better late than never.

I really like the execution of cut, copy and paste. They seem to have gotten it right. Being able to search across the iPhone with Spotlight is great too. With so many changes (over 100), it will be interesting to what else is different over the next few months.

Yeah sms forwarding and it only took 2 years for that amazing feature to come :p

Thanks though. For me number one reason to want 3.0 now.

All other features seem to be nice.

Does anyone know......

So if i register and pay $99, I will get beta 3.0? Now will registered users be getting updates for that beta as they roll out. Also, can I go back and forth from 3.0 to current version on the OS.

Thanks

ok after watching the whole sdk video.. some things that come to mind are..

1. I'm really going to be annoyed by constant pop up notifications... i hope apple does something similar to the palm pre notifications on the bottom of the screen.

2. What is so different about the original iphone that MMS isn't going to work?

3. Spotlight is cool but looks kinda messy.. i'd like app seperation a little more defined.

4. Why are they treating copy and paste and landscape mode like this gift from the gods?... they shoulda breezed by those two ..."sorry you shoulda had these along time ago, we've added c&p and landscape to everything...alright moving on!"

5. What about "Tasks, ToDos sync"?

6. Will safari cache and save multiple webpages open now instead of having to constantly reload when i reopen safari?

7. bring your own maps? is there going to be turn by turn navigation or not!?

hopefully they'll wise up and put the notifications in the menubar.

Apple wants your money.

This isn't the final version of the firmware

Nope. :( at least that wasn't announced today. Maybe that will be one of the 100 other features.

Will safari cache and save multiple webpages open now instead of having to constantly reload when i reopen safari?
*sigh* someday...

bring your own maps? is there going to be turn by turn navigation or not!?

By third party developers, but Google won't allow their maps to be used in turn by turn navigators.

That logic doesn't make sense. If an app is annoying and doing that, the user would/could just delete the app. Besides, with the saturation of apps in every category imaginable, I would guess that it would be in a developer's best interest to make their apps as unobtrusive as possible. Besides, they currently can bombard you with ads and whatnot asking you to buy stuff, you just have to leave the app to actually do the buying. There's no reason to stop an extremely useful functionality just cause someone might make an annoying app. And there's no stopping a paid app from bombarding you with ads and whatnot. Apple isn't helping anyone by doing this.

This was a great event in many ways. But I feel the biggest part of this event was that people other than Jobs can create excitement and anticipation about a great product. I wish Jobs good health and hope that he remains the CEO for many years to come. But Jobs isn't doing all the coding for the iPhone 3.0 OS. Apple employs thousands of talented employees and when you remove an icon like Jobs from a keynote, you get people to focus back on the product again. I think it would be great for Steve to no longer do these keynotes. He steals the spotlight too many times in these events, even if he isn't trying to (ie. his appearance at WWDC 2008). Remove the icon and people realize that Apple can still come out with great products. Yes Jobs' vision and strategy are a part of that but he can't be credited for everything.

I wish Steve Jobs would do all the major announcements like new products... I think he does the best job, he's the most personable one on stage, imo.

I agree, but if they think of this as a feature, limiting its use to paid apps is smart because people won't a) delete the app and b) will be less bothered by it because it will be used as they described: a way to add purchasable expansions/enhancements to a game/app.
