I was reading Google News just now and this article pops up; couple this with alot of comments out there on these forums and I'm over it--already. Quit your whining people it's embarassing. First of all, yesterday X amount of dollars got you X amount of computer from Apple.com. Today X amount of dollars gets you X+ amount of computer from Apple.com. It may not have been what you *hoped* for, but nobody got screwed and if you're one of the ones who convinced yourself Apple had "adopted you" as one of it's blessed children and promised to provide for you and nurture you and keep you happy, sorry, it was your personal fantasy. They owe you nothing. Just like your government owes you nothing. Stop with the handout, take care of me mentality. You don't have to buy their computer. Go buy your HP or Dell with AMD processors that run at 14.2Ghz (and come loaded with so much in the registry before you even turn them on that they make a PPC G4 look like a Core i7) and stop wasting time on the boards complaining and whining. SERIOUSLY. It's embarrassing.

Here's what I took from today's announcements...
For $1200 I can get a LOADED computer with a huge 20" screen and the world's best OS...firewire 800, wireless, plenty of USB ports, super fast ram and a huge hard drive. This offering is MORE than most of you will ever need in a computer and is blazing fast at running OSX.

For more you can get a Mac Pro loaded with the latest processor and RAM...99.3% of you reading this will never NEED a Mac Pro for what you do though you like the idea of owning one. But for those of you who will actually need that kind of power, I trust you're in a lucrative business that makes owning one of these worthwhile and what you're getting today for the buck is more than you would have yesterday.

For the basic user for $599.00 you get a computer you can fit in a purse that has most of the stuff the higher end ones have. It's the novelty item. It looks the same as always which is still cool and not outdated (did they really need to update the look--seriously?) and yeah it's probably over priced considering that once you add the screen you want and the keyboard and mouse and make necessary upgrades (i.e. Ram, hard drive) then you would do better with an iMac but again, it's a NOVELTY. You're paying more for the novelty of it.

So I think Apple did a lot of cool stuff today and here ends your lesson on capitalism, which contrary to popular belief in 2009 still works: if you don't see it the way I presented it you have a choice: go buy something else. Whatever you choose I wish you the best of luck; I only ask one thing: QUIT WHINING. Apple isn't your foster parent and they shouldn't be.

*EDIT: and I'm not trying to be rude; not trying to offend and not trying to have an attitude--I just read about the new releases today and I'm like "man that's cool" and then I read the posts and there's a lot of entitled people and I'm thinking to myself life is too short to whine like this. It really really is.

I don't suppose you've heard of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. Free Speech? Ringing any (liberty) bells?

If you don't like people's opinions don't read them. ;) Life is too short to spend time reading comments and then telling everyone on the internet to shut up because you don't agree.

Really! :D

Since you've asked for it, you'll get it.
The rest of the PC industry normally gives you X+ technology for X- bucks with every new product cycle. I think the difference is quite obvious. And don't tell me I'm wrong, I'm in this game for thirty years now.
[/QUOTE]

You said you're in the "game" 30 years when the game 30 years ago could only fit in a 14 story building and had the processing power of a Palm Pilot (on a really good day). Yes, the PC industry brings you faster speeds each product cycle but the junkware that pollutes the system tray and registry end up negating any speed increase they give you and half the time the things are so bottle necked because while they give you a 3ghz processor (so they claim) it's got a low level of L2 or the FSB is slow or it uses slow RAM.

Then, we're all PAYING CUSTOMERS. That means we have earned the right to complain about the company we are doing business with. Apple wants our money so they better sell us what WE want.

What'd you pay for yesterday? That's the thing - yes, you've paid, but paying implies your about to buy.

Most of us entered the vendor-lock in with Apple because although we knew the risk, it made sense for our business at the time. But once you've invested into Apple hard- and software, switching to something else becomes a very expensive proposition, so you usually don't do it but suck Apple's (expensive) policy up as long as it is bearable or acceptable.

In other words: Many of Apple's customers don't have much of a choice, and Apple is taking unethical advantage of that by selling overpriced products to professionals and by NOT offering sufficient choice.

Please share with us your current set up and we'll all decide if Apple has screwed you into obsoletion. Just because they updated products yesterday doesn't mean they rendered your current setup unusable.

So for people who made a commitment to the Apple platform the game is not as simple as you depict it. You whole points are only valid from a low-end consumer perspective, and that is not the perspective from where I and many others here are judging what is going on.

I'm typing this on a unibody MacBook Pro, not a MacMini. Has MBP become a low end product line?

We're buying those Mac Pros not because we're in the "we love the premium design" corner. We're buying the Mac Pro because we need an expendable hardware platform that gives us enough computing power to run professional software, and some of this software only runs on OS X.

What are you running that a new iMac CANNOT HANDLE? This reasoning causes soccer moms to drive Hummers. "Well, just in case there's a fall out I need to own a tank to protect my 4 year old". I think a mini van (iMac) would do 99% of buyers fine--you *want* the Hummer.

Apple hasn't fully realized that they are in the PC industry now. The only real difference between their PCs and the others is the operating system running on them. They don't want us to run that OS on other hardware, but the problem for Apple is that we now can. And that in many countries, their EULA is not legally binding. So we can now take our software and move on.

Apple is not in the PC industry.

OS X is NOT more stable or reliable than Windows. Whoever says that hasn't used Windows in more than 15 years. It's also very debatable if OS X is more user friendly than Windows XP or Vista. I know MANY users who disagree. And I also know for fact that on -- MY -- Mac Pro, Vista Ultimate Edition 64 Bit runs much faster than OS X Leopard. So much for your "registry argument", which is pure nonsense from fantasy land.

I do find it funny when I hear it's a Mac that runs Windows best. Dell has to love that!

But you're right here: Apple doesn't owe me anything. But neither do I owe anything to Apple, and neither do I have to say "thank you" just because they slightly upgraded their machine specifications and the price along with it.

See if you really thought I was right on this point you wouldn't have posted your long post. That's the problem with the crowd I've addressed: you DON'T believe Apple doesn't owe you anything.

It's a business relationship, and I expect to get a proper value for my money. But lately, it is becoming more and more of a problem to justify an investment into Apple -- and that, eventually, will become a problem for Apple, too.

YOU'RE NOT IN A RELATIONSHIP!

When Microsoft began charging too much for their software, many companies migrated to Linux in their server rooms. It took Microsoft a good while to wake up and "correct" their pricing, but they did it. But Microsoft also listened to their customers and implemented features that are very competitive and add unique value to their platform.

It wasn't pricing that has driven companies like HP to start developing their own OS or Dell to start offering Linux--it was the fact that people were complaining about Vista; this had nothing to do with pricing. If pricing was an issue for some editions (like Windows Vista XP Ultimate Business Professional Enterprise Smilely Face Bob Ross Edition--one of the 113 offerings you can choose from) it was not the main issue.

IBM, on the other hand, never really woke up to the competition in the hardware market. The end of the story: IBM sold their PC business completely.

Not at all why IBM sold their PC business. They had bigger fish to fry and why compete in a market that could easily be saturated. IBM is doing fine as a company because they diversified their business and started innovating, kinda like Apple did. If Apple stores only sold iMacs and MacBooks and Apple made nothing else, there would be no Apple.

Now which way do you propose Apple should go?

It doesn't matter what I propose. I'm not Apple. But they have billions in the bank, a cult following, and they don't need a bailout (notice I didn't say "and I'm happy with my Mac"--I am, but this is not part of the equation--it is irrelevant!--which is my whole point all along!), so I'd say they're probably doing okay, wouldn't you?

This concept is really starting to become irritating. The Mac Pro is "needed" by people because it is the only Mac that has a bunch features you can easily get on Windows systems and they most certainly aren't for business users only. Quad core processing is not some feature that only business users need, that is pure ignorance. Multiple display support, internal RAID, larger memory support, multiple internal disks, these are features readily available on low through high end Windows systems. It is also about value for money, when the same hardware can be had cheaper, or considerably cheaper in the single socket Mac Pro's case then it becomes frustrating to people. There is nothing wrong with wanting to use OS X and not pay a huge premium as far as hardware specification and features are concerned.

Yes because the average user needs an internal raid. You simply proved the original poster correct, tool.

You lost all credibility when trying to insult windows when you clearly know nothing about the PC market and/or Windows. You come off as a whiner against Windows, as case of 'do as i say and not as i do?'

I followed your link which lead me to the 6 things you should know article. Here are the 6 to me a mac pro user:

1) Integrated GPU iMacs.
That's bad not good and I don't care. I'm a MP user.

2) Mac Mini now includes two video ports.
OK, But I'm an MP user...

3)The Mac Pro now starts at $2499. While this still sounds like a lot, it's actually $300 less than the old base configuration.
Yeah, but it's speced so far down it should in all honesty sell for about $1,000. It's almost identical in every way to a i7 including expandability! So while it's $300 less it should in all reasonability either be user upgradable to 2 processors and 32 gigs of RAM of be reduced to the $1000 range like other 8gb (max) single proc i7 systems. We just got ripped off for over $1000 by selecting the 4 core model. :(

4) Apple's new desktops all feature FireWire 800, but you can still use your FireWire 400 devices with the purchase of a FireWire 400-to-800 adapter.
K... Whatever.

5) Mac Pros can support up to eight displays.
This is nothing new. The very 1st Mac Pro could do this. My Mac Pro v1.1 certainly can. Why is this listed as anything???

6) None of Apple's new desktops utilize the Core i7.
WTF? Who cares? I want xeon in my dual processor MP and don't care about the rest. And the 3500 series xeon they're using in the single processor systems are almost identical to a Core i7 anyway except for the ECC feature.

OK, that's the 6.

As far as your post here I'm sorry you don't mind getting ripped. I'm sorry you don't have the gumption to stand up for yourself and say BOTH when you get a good deal and when you're offered a jip - having your intelligence insulted. Maybe you would like to buy some snake oil from me? I have some cases going cheap. But don't complain or say anything about it being a jip. After all you don't want to embarrass yourself! :p

Honestly, your response isn't clear (makes no sense actually) - I'm trying to figure out if you were on board with what I said or if you were ripping it. You made like 6 counter points that I never even brought up so did you mean to quote me or somebody else?

You lost all credibility when trying to insult windows when you clearly know nothing about the PC market and/or Windows. You come off as a whiner against Windows, as case of 'do as i say and not as i do?'

Who were you addressing? I am the OP and I was a Windows user until 2 years ago. I am open to losing my credibility but saying that "you clearly know nothing about Windows" doesn't really destroy my credibility; it establishes your opinion.

The Article you referenced had the 6 points. I addressed those. :)

here's the direct link. http://www.pcworld.com/article/1606...ow_about_apples_new_desktops.html?tk=rel_news

This was referenced as "reasons" why we were "fuming" irrationally in this article: http://www.pcworld.com/article/160608/mac_fans_fume_about_updated_desktops.html

I was saying it is pointless to start a thread about how you hate other peoples opinions that you deem as 'whining' because then YOU look like a whiner for whining about how people are whining. It is a cyclical thread of hypocrisy.

Quit your sycophantic sucking up to apple.

It's embarrassing.

Seriously.

First of all, yesterday X amount of dollars got you X amount of computer from Apple.com. Today X amount of dollars gets you X+ amount of computer from Apple.com.

Generally I side with the "stop whining" crowd rather than the whiners, but as a point of fact, the above statement is just not true this time around. Pretty much everyone outside of the US saw prices go WAY up yesterday. In the UK, the same money that got you a 20" 2.66/2 GB/320 GB/radeon 2600 on Monday now gets you a 20" 2.66/2 GB/320/nvidea 9400. That's right - the same money for not better, not the same, but an actual DOWNgrade.

In the US, the same money that got you a 20" 2.66/2 GB/320 GB/radeon 2600 on Monday now gets you a 24" 2.66/4 GB/640 GB/nvidea 9400, which is mostly an upgrade (tho the video card is a downgrade, and it's kinda ridiculous that any part of the computer is actually downgraded after an 8 month update cycle).

So with regard to US customers, you're basically right. With regard to overseas customers, you're wrong on the facts. On Monday a UK buyer could get X computer for Y pounds; today a UK buyer actually gets X- computer for Y pounds.

Caveat: as I've been saying to UK posters since yesterday, it's not Apple's fault the pound used to be worth $1.90 and is now worth $1.40. The US dollar is very strong right now and the rest of the world is going to pay a premium for American-made products. BUT, I can certainly see how, from the perspective of a UK buyer, it's nonetheless galling to be paying the same amount of money for a computer that is actually inferior in a significant way to one that has been sold for the past 8 months.

Sorry but that analogy doesn't really work.

All analogies are flawed...somewhere.

I can still watch ABC, NBC and all the same shows on my Samsung, LG or Sony TV that I chose to purchase with my dollar. You can only (legally and reliably) buy an Apple computer to use OSX, it isn't even close the same situation.

Actually, you buy Apple because merely watching ABC-NBC-CBS is not enough for you: you also want to do it "Commercial Free" (analogy parallel: without using MS-Windows).

None of us sit all day at our computer just to watch the OS.

The OS is merely a tool facilitates productivity through some other Application ... doesn't matter if we're talking Photoshop, MS-Office, iLife or just email & browser.

And there's good tools (OS X) and bad tools (Vista). Sometimes, whatever you consider to be the "good tool" has some other trade-off ... such as it costs more, is heavier, lacks a claw to pull nails, etc.

The bottom line is that you'll only buy it if in the overall assessment of its trade-off it is a net positive value.

And this is true for everything...this isn't unique to Apple.

This, uh...

This is a help forum. People come here with problems. Therefore, you're, uh...

you know...

going to see people with problems here...

That's why it was closed. Not because the content was being censored, but because the content was common sense.

You saying that my thread was so successful that it must be closed?

 Good lord, Fanboy much?

1) one could argue that buying a PC and then buying Vista separately is still cheaper than a Mac pro and you wouldn't have any of the shovelware crap pre installed

2)Dont act like Windows is crippled. Its runs plenty fast on Macs ,but when people talk about Vista on any other PC they act like its some dog slow piece of crap

3) at least those windows computers have decent Flash performance

Before you get angry, I DO agree with you on the other points

As a US company, Apple has offered a new version of the iMac that overall is an improvement for the same cost.

Exchange rates are a whole different issue and not Apple's fault. Yes, it's not fun being in a country where the price has gone up due to the exchange rate variance. I can empathize with everyone on this. However, there is not much Apple can do about the exchange rate issue.

I agree with a lot of what you said, but thats the stupidest statement i've ever read on here.

"It's also very debatable if OS X is more user friendly than Windows XP or Vista"
bahahaha im nearly crying with laughter, one word: Viruses. Does OS X have any? let me think about it... no! :D
omg your talking so much subjective bs.

"OS X is NOT more stable or reliable than Windows"
Another word: Registry

"Mac Pro, Vista Ultimate Edition 64 Bit runs much faster than OS X Leopard."

I can do that too, if i fill my OS X with crap, like what your spewing forth, and then completely empty Windows then Windows is going to run faster.

I assume you've tried Windows 7, because it sucks worse than Vista.

Go wear your t-shirt and stop trolling

This sums up your post pretty well:
destructoid-dot-com-fanboy-anatomy.jpg

I'm not a Vista or Windows 7 fan (interface), but it is stable. I can't say I have had a crash with any Windows version from XP on.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/160608/mac_fans_fume_about_updated_desktops.html

I am so impressed with Apple, that I will never buy another PC. After 8 years with Dell and Microsoft problems and viruses I am in love with my iMac.

People need to be a little more grateful that there is such a thing as an Apple computer and you have a 'choice'. I am gonna try to return my iMac cus it's still within 30 days of purchase, but if I couldn't I'd still love my iMac. It does everything it promised and more! :)

You're right abt Apple being a choice, but I still play around w/ my old HP laptop, cos it still works.

How's the iMac? I'm debating on whether to get a mini or a full fledged iMac (gonna try to convert my parents to mac xD - they both already have iPhones, so its not going to be hard, just the pricing hehehe~)

Okay, so the prices went up outside the USA. Given the USA-Canada exchange rate however, the low-end Mac mini is still about 35$CAD cheaper than what it should be. And besides, the old Canadian prices were set when the CAD was at near parity with the USD, so it's no mystery why prices went up yesterday. Apple only seems to change their prices when they upgrade their products.

And Apple did everything I hoped for:
- they kept the Mac mini (those rumors of EOL for the Mac mini... all this time... enough said)
- they kept the Core 2 Duo CPU (making the Mac mini smaller/going with an Atom CPU would have been stupid)
- they kept FW400 (and even upgraded to FW800)
- they ditched the GMA950 and switched to nVidia 9400M
- they added support for up to 4GB
- they finally ditched the ComboDrive on the low-end model.
- and they also added 802.11n, though personally I don't care since I don't do wireless with my desktop computers.

Seriously, I couldn't be happier with the new Mac mini!

Now all I need is money. Oh, and I have to wait for Snow Leopard. :D

The prices went up abroad, but in most countries including the UK people are paying less than US customers. US customers should be the ones complaining, they get royally screwed by Apple.

 Good lord, Fanboy much?

Not angry - not a fanboy though - definitely not one of those. Windows becomes crippled when Dell, HP and others allow companies to ad junkware to their computers. And Flash to me is kinda just a waste of time. Java matters much more to me - i know that's a big iPhone debate too about when Flash is coming; as an iPhone owner--don't really want Flash!! But I may be the only one.

Please quote correctly - I didn't not type any of the above yet your post made it look like I was the one who said this.

I like apple, atleast in my workflow. I purchased a Macbook Pro because I needed it and could justify the premium. There is a premium, and it would be silly to think there weren't. Reason Why their profits are through the roof.

Over the years, i've been able to walk into a apple store and get my stuff fixed. Its my primary machine. I didn't pay for pro care and i'm on my machine 24/7, but as a network engineer and virtualization goon, I can appreciate the hardware and attention to detail(such as the robustness of the OS, and its sophisticated intergration with different hardware configurations).

In the enterprise space, Windows (and I GUESS linux) reins supreme. Windows Server 2003, 2007 etc are rock solid. I honestly cannot say the same about vista. The desktop space, while successful, is flawed in its wild wild west format. Choice is a great thing, but it has its consequences. Too many manufacturers trying to create '1337' custom interfaces and control panels that step on the resources of other devices , to the point where you must individual pick out each component in order to find the culprit. I STILL virtualize XP to this day (I don't use bootcamp because I have the intel x25-m). Why? Well, I still use it, its rock solid, and when kept streamlined, it works pretty well.

Apple machines are, in my opinion, industrial grade, sophisticated, and capable of being deployed in mission critical situations.

System builders and network admins who work with HP/Dell/Sun, etc, know how tightly intergrated Microsoft and their buddies are. I have windows server 2000 machines still in production that have uptime of OVER 3 years, and thats on the short side.

You all know what i'm talking about- rigerous in house testing, driver compatability updates, redundant monitoring...a bit of poetry, between the OS, product vendors and hardware vendors, who would lose clients by the second should their services bring operations to a halt.

This is what i've found from Apple. May not be the most powerful hardware, but i'm sure there is a reason that my Macbook Pro, which operations in a desktop fashion and is on 24/7 while being used upwards of 10-15 hours per day, does not have a kickn' cool 1119820.12 GHz processor, like some of my cluster nodes do :). I'm a self proclaimed power user, dual screen mode, run atleast one virtualized OS, if not more, and edit video and the like in my spare time. It works great for me, and I've never had a catastrophic failure of my MBP, like I have with my lenovos, dells, etc. Not sayin that they are bad, not at all. But in my own personal experience, their server systems move like clockwork, just like my iphone, and just like my MBP.

Physics, testing, shipping, licensing, all this costs money. Our machines may not have the EVERYTHING you could want in a machine, but you can't cater to everyone. But the fact that they are in the Black (up) in this certianly down economy means something.

Well, talking about OS's; all of them have design flaws and bugs. It's just the nature of the beast.

Windows really is plagued by some of the most devastating though. It's layered build style lends to more security holes than swiss cheese and it's registry causes GUI interactivity to progressively become slower and slower with every new installation and product update/upgrade. - and yes this is still a very big problem in Vista. The later will find you sooner or later depending on how many and how often you install, uninstall, and update applications that make use of the registry. I have not tested Windows 7 yet but if it has a registry you can probably bet it will be a problem for it too.

The aforementioned security holes are so many and so obvious that crackers and dirtbags almost find it too boring to create new viruses anymore. Non-the-less some still do and there's a few thousand already out there which must be defended against. I'm not saying anything you all don't already know here. These virus protection schemes are brutal bandaids and very unintelligent - all of them! So while scanning your entire drives or thousands and thousands of files heat is produced and extra wear and tear on the entire system occurs. This additionally steels precious clock cycles and contributes to a sluggish feeling.

Another major design flaw in Windows is the footprint protection schemes incorporated and more are added with each new version of Windows. This extends to folder naming & location as well as overwrite protection of potentially useless files - Delete a designated file you do not need and never use and it reappears magically within seconds. It's like we're slaves to the system without rights and deemed too incompetent to decide whether or not to delete or move something.

Window's modular layered design is the major cause of something I like to call "configuration confusion". I get dizzy with all the different panels, dialogues, and DOS commands one has to visit in order to change just one aspect. Of course not every seting in Windows is that way but far far too many are and it creates complexity without sophistication and that equates to headaches and time lost fiddling with the OS instead of being creative or industrious.

Not accounting for Windows 7, Vista is the best version since NT4 or maybe NT3.xx but still all of the complaints described here apply as well as more I have not mentioned. IMHO Windows is generally speaking the worst operating system still being actively developed. That is a relative remark though and should be taken in context. Windows if cared for is still a very powerful system with many mouth watering features!

In fact none of the problems mentioned so far have much to do with my personal choice to try and not use it, buy it, or incorporate it in my digital life in any way. For me the choice is politically based. MS and the B&M Foundation practice active and very harmful eugenics in Africa and many other poverty stricken areas around the globe. They're directly involved at some level in far too many programs that are detrimental to mankind and human race in part or as a whole even though many such are painted to look like and recognized by some of you here, as positive endeavors. It's for these reasons that I'm trying to get away from MS. That MS owns a major chunk of Apple I have yet to fully comprehend, define terms for, or act upon - but I guess that needs to be considered. <shrug>

As stated earlier however, none of these things preclude my holding Apple's feet to the fire regarding price, specification, and quality!
