WTF would you ever need to carry headphone jack adapter in your pants pocket? Just attach it to your headphones and it's done with.

His point is that in a pants pocket it is hard enough for the headphone to stay connected at its original point of contact. Having two points where the connection can break is a bad design and a bad customer experience.

It's just one of the reasons why the iPhone 7 is a failure.

If you remember your phone then adding an Adapter, if you don't want to purchase more, doesn't seem like a mental strain. But that's just me. As far as it not being a new complaint, you are correct and it nearly killed the iPhone...Oh wait...:)

There are a lot more reasons than just the headphone adapter, since I'm a musician. It's not a single thing more than a bunch of little things.

Yeah, it didn't kill the iPhone...because they fixed it in the iPhone 3G, which, incidentally, was my first iPhone.

Of course I don't carry B&O headphones everywhere - they are bulky, and also too expensive to keep multiple pairs in multiple places. I only use them for prolonged listening sessions, while at home or during long flights.

For casual use on the go - I carry stock EarPods in my bag. These will be replaced by Lightning AirBuds which come with iPhone 7.. or I might even buy a pair of new wireless AirPods.

I understand everyone's needs are different, but I do not see the need for own more than a couple of pairs of headphones. And if you insist on doing it - you can just invest in a few $9/piece adapters. This is certainly not a reason to skip iPhone upgrade, to me at least.

It's one of many issues in regards to the jack. I'm a musician, so I use the jack for all kinds of reasons outlined in my various posts. If anything, I'd rather Apple get rid of the Lightning port and go for wireless charging and only wireless data transmission. lol That's probably the next step.

There's no reason to adopt Apple's proprietary standard, or, for that matter, USB's to accomplish what the 3.5 mm Jack has always done. It provides the budget headphone listener no improvement. It provides the audiophile, whether they are using high priced easily-drivable cans or not, no improvement.

All this adds is immediate inconvenience for consumers trying to find headphones to buy, inconvenience for consumers trying to listen to non-lightning headphones upon purchase (the mere existence of the dongle is an insult), and inconvenience for consumers trying to charge their product while listening at the same time. It also adds great uncertainty for the longevity of any given headphone utilizing said standards. Are we really willing to believe that these companies have any true loyalty toward these standards, that consumers won't find themselves having to do headphone upgrades for the simple fact that their cable is no longer compatible?

You get better sound quality with the digital lightning port than you would with a 3.5m analog jack.

My Parasound Halo, my Headroom Desktop Amp, and my Oppo HA-2 mixed with the Oppo PM-3, Sennheiser HD-600, and AKG-702's won't magically improve My listening experience with USB-C or Lightning cables attached to the cans.

He meant for people using everyday gear, not an audiophile setup you only use at home.

The implication is that bad gear and great gear alike is missing something by not going directly to lightning. That's not so. It's sheer snake oil. Those Beats won't sound better with lightning cables or with USB-C. There is no legitimate reason why the average consumer or even the audiophile ought to spend time fumbling through adapters and dongles to make sure that they have either USB-C or Lightning in order for their headphones to work at all.

Everyday gear = lightning headphones?
[doublepost=1473295262][/doublepost]Meh, they are including an adapter. I can deal with that. Hopefully someone sells an adapter so I can charge too when I'm in my work vehicle, that would be helpful.

I'll keep my current iPhone device as long as I can. Hopefully in 2017 we'll see a humble apology and climbdown from Apple when they realize the error of their ways and rectify this terrible decision.

That sounds exactly like what I'm doing with both my Mac Pro and Mac Mini. I don't like either of the current models for sale so I'm milking my older computers as long as I can.

I really don't think Apple with turn around though. Not for the Macs nor the headphone jack. Those ships have sailed.

Ain't going to happen. Apple is all-in on this and are already pushing their AirPods that have custom wireless chips in them and everything. They aren't going to backtrack. If anything they're going to ramp up the R&D and we'll be seeing AirPod updates every so often with improved "W" chips and battery life.

A dongle for a smartphone? Come on! This isn't a retina MacBook, it's a portable device that should have all required functionality built in. It's ridiculous to suggest that this removal is acceptable and disingenuous for anybody suggest the pro-headphone lobby should go elsewhere if it doesn't suit.

If you enjoy being tethered to your phone by a wire, I just don't see how you could be so upset about a tiny little compatibility adapter that's included for free.

Anyone who is "pro-headphone" would actually be glad to embrace the Lightning port headphones, since the sound quality will be noticeably better.

The theme "RIP iPhone" has very little to do with the headphone jack. It's almost like Apple removed the jack to put all the attention on it instead of what is fundamentally wrong: It's an incredibly boring phone.

Two years after the release of the fantastic iPhone 6, Apple has simply run out of ideas. A little bit of a better camera, a touch more battery life, water-resistance no one needs, a haptic feedback home button that is indiscernible from the mechanical original, two shades of black that no one can see inside a case, processing speed that isn't necessary, touting 'wireless' as if Lightning and Bluetooth headphones haven't been in the market for years. In the end it's just an iPhone 6 slightly revised. So we're going to keep our iPhone 6's. So it's not going to sell very well. And it's going to shake Apple to its core.

As an audiophile no headphone jack is quite put off, the adapter thing is not great option. Is not that we all carry a big chunk of equipment out to listen music like me I have daily headphones to go with. EarPods simply gets untouch from day1 and Bluetooth quality is not there yet... Why Apple?

You realize that people said the exact same things about floppy disks and cd drives right?

Not the same thing at all. Floppy disks had pitifully small storage and the handwriting was on the wall that they simply were not going to be useful much longer. Good riddance.

CD/DVD drives is a lot closer to this situation and equally as arrogant. I am convinced they removed these optical drives primarily to enhance itunes sales. They had a vested interest in killing disks to force downloads and streaming. They don't make a dime when people buy a DVD and rip it into their own library.

They should have put two lightning ports in the phone and I could have gotten behind that. Still a pain to shift from an industry standard audio jack, but at least I don't have to carry one more dongle to be able to listen and charge at the same time. That is ridiculous. Phones are the ultimate portable devices and should not require accessories like that.

I see this complaint here, year after year, when a new iPhone is announced. It's not enough wow factor, it wasn't a big enough leap, it's only an incremental boost, etc. What would you have them add that would be a killer new feature? What aren't they exploring that you want them to explore?

Across the board, most cell phones now are just incremental updates with improved speed, larger storage capacity, higher camera quality, and adjustments to screen size/resolution. I'm not sure where people are expecting it to go. I have a device that allows me to work remotely from anywhere, watch TV shows and movies, instantly video chat/call/text/email any person, anywhere in the world, browse the internet, keep track of appointments and reminders, get an Uber, use GPS and maps, order dinner, control devices in my home, pay all my bills and do all my banking, take pictures and video... the list goes on. Phones are so feature-rich now that you can essentially use them for nearly every aspect of your life. Yet still people complain they're not doing enough. Maybe I'm having some mental disconnect and I'm just not seeing what everyone else is seeing in terms of the phones being boring or doomed or whatever.

I have an iPhone 6 and it's definitely slow when I'm multitasking with certain apps. The speed bump alone between the 6 and the 7 is reason enough for me to upgrade. I've always upgraded every two years since the original phone was released and I have never regretted that decision. Every new iPhone has been a vast improvement over the model I previously owned.

My only one concern this time is that I drive a lot and so I use my phone to play music in the car. I have a 2008 Nissan with an aux port and I have always connected my phone through the 3.5mm jack. This isn't necessarily an issue with the included Lightning-to-3.5mm adapter, but it will be if I also need to charge the phone. I'm hoping there will be some kind of splitter made available eventually. Having said that, I knew this day was coming. I was a die-hard iPod Classic owner and I was beyond disappointed when it was discontinued. But I somehow adapted and moved on. I knew with wireless charging becoming a frequent topic of conversation, we were moving into an increasingly wireless world, and that would mean the 3.5mm jack would go eventually. So here we are. Like the discontinuation of the iPod Classic, I'll get by somehow and adapt.

Oh? Does the adapter allow simultaneous charging and listening? That's an honest question, I don't know. If not, then no, it's not the same thing at all.

Besides, why should I have to keep track of yet another dongle? They've been making a lot of boneheaded decisions lately. Almost exactly the same mistake with MacBooks having only one port, and that follows the ridiculous Mac Pro where you have to plug everything into it externally -- which is just stupid.

The one they're bundling doesn't but I doubt you'll have trouble finding a third party one. "Problem" solved.

why is it so hard to keep your adapter connected to your precious $1000 headphones?

i'm with apple here... get rid of this technology from the 1800's.

i give it 2 years before the headphone jack is gone from all flagship phones.

No headphone jack. No sale.

SOMEONE had to do it. Apple usually leads the industry. Back when the iMac was released, people were flabbergasted that it had no floppy drive or ADB ports...

And I currently don't even like the company, yet I am defending the decision because it's just like other past decisions: they are fine after the rest of the industry adjusts. Again, it seems incredible that someone would have whined about not having a floppy drive in their iMac, as floppies were pretty much useless by the time the early 2000s came around.

That's the last thing you should get is Lightening port headphones, given Apple tendency to arbitrarily changes standards to suit their bottom line.
