Not immediately, but this is Apple's attempt to push-out the analogue jack for good.
And that's a bad thing? Adapters give you choices to use jack or if something cool comes along use it. Digital headphone preamp built into the headphones or stand alone using digital stream. It would have one DA conversion at headphone output. Preamp could have an internal battery to charge phone at same time. If Apple allows API's to be used, possibilities are much greater

Yes, I think it's a bad thing.

Adapters make sense for a computer being carried in a bag, making adapters easily storable, but not in a phone being carried in pants pockets.

WTF would you ever need to carry headphone jack adapter in your pants pocket? Just attach it to your headphones and it's done with.

I have a beautiful pair of B&O headphones that I plan to continue to use with my iPhone 7 - I will just stick an adapter in my headphone case, and it's always there for when I decide to use non-stock headphones. OK, it added 3 extra grams of weight to my headphones, boo hoo.

Like others had said already... Get. Over. It.

Reading through this thread and some of the replies the OP has got annoys me because it gives people the impression all iPhone users act like this.
I agree, the cultish attitude is off-putting. I can only imagine the guffaws by the same folks at Samsung in the alternate universe where they are the ones who removed the port.

I've got several pairs of headphones that I use in different locations. I guess I'd just need to buy 4-5 adapters.

You do remember the first iPhone, right? Practically EVERYONE complained about the need to use an adapter for 3rd party headphones. This isn't a new complaint.

If you have 4-5 pairs of headphones that you have to use on a regular basis - the problem is with you. Use fewer headphones, use stock EarBuds, switch to wireless.

Apple cannot be keeping outdated technologies indefinitely just to accommodate you and your bizarre use cases.

Of course. I keep some at the office, I keep some in my bedroom, I keep some at the studio. What, you carry around those B&O headphones everywhere you go??

I even have a good pair of Bluetooth headphones, but I never use them. The sound isn't as good, and keeping track of charging annoys me.

Over 30% of the people in the recent forum poll said they'd skip the iPhone without a 3.5mm jack. While I'm not in the majority, I think it's fair to say that it isn't an unusual sentiment.

Opens the door for drm and a proprietary adapter will always be worse. They should transition to USB C.

I don't care that they removed the headphone jack as I mostly use BT headphones but I do wonder what people are supposed to do when they want to listen to music and charge their device at the same time. That seems inconvenient.

I think this is a good thing, and as Phil said, very brave.

Haha. It's a good thing people need to carry around dongles all the time? If your dongle gets lost, then you can't listen to music with the iPhone 7 untill you buy a new dongle.

Some people use IEM's which sound much better than most headphones on the market.

I don't even understand the jabs at Samsung in this thread. Not only have they admired an issue they immediately placed a recall. And all because people were using shoddy charging cables. But again, what does that have to do with Apple? It's not like there aren't a handful of other alternatives there. It's not iPhone 7 versus the Galaxy...

And this is from a guy who doesn't even use Samsung phones because I haven't, in the past, like them. Are we already at a point where we have nothing else to objectively say other than ridiculing another product we deem worse?

I mean I'd rather not have a headphone jack, than risk a smartphone exploding in my pocket.

And all these people will be getting shiny new note 7s within the next couple weeks..big deal...at least Samsung was being responsible

Really? Why is that?

I like to move forward with technology, I haven't plugged in a headphone jack in years. It's wasted space in terms of my uses. I highly prefer Bluetooth headphones, much more convenient and comfortable. I'm NOT trying to say that consumers who have a need for a headphone jack are wrong, I'm just relaying my own personal opinion and how I use my phone. I would rather have the stereo speaker and continue to use my Bluetooth headphones. I also like this decision because it will force the industry to wireless solutions and through inevitable innovation we will have better and better products because of it.

If you remember your phone then adding an Adapter, if you don't want to purchase more, doesn't seem like a mental strain. But that's just me. As far as it not being a new complaint, you are correct and it nearly killed the iPhone...Oh wait...:)

Of course I don't carry B&O headphones everywhere - they are bulky, and also too expensive to keep multiple pairs in multiple places. I only use them for prolonged listening sessions, while at home or during long flights.

For casual use on the go - I carry stock EarPods in my bag. These will be replaced by Lightning AirBuds which come with iPhone 7.. or I might even buy a pair of new wireless AirPods.

I understand everyone's needs are different, but I do not see the need for own more than a couple of pairs of headphones. And if you insist on doing it - you can just invest in a few $9/piece adapters. This is certainly not a reason to skip iPhone upgrade, to me at least.
