Or, you could just use the adapter they're including in the meantime. There are already some very good lightning headphones on the market. I own and love the Audeze Sine.

Let's not get hung up in the lack of a headphone jack here.

The reason it's RIP iPhone is because Apple did nothing to excite us here, there are no new features worth upgrading for. And, if anything, those of us in iPhone 6 whose contracts are expiring can now feel good about keeping what we've got and avoid spending ridiculous money. This is an interesting day, the disappointment over the 7 now feels like Christmas as I've got a cost-free 6 to move on with, I'm not missing anything by staying the course.

the new Moto Z doesn't have one.

I know. That's why, as much as I loved my Moto X, I now have an S7. And I really, really miss that active display.

Hopefully the next Moto will reinstate the jack (and go back to a more reasonable size) - I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Fair enough. Although I don't think I've ever heard anyone say the iPhone is too thick and heavy.

Exactly. Apple is running out of fairy dust and the peasants aren't falling for it anymore. Apple Watch was a half-baked product, Apple TV is a half-baked product, never thought the iPhone would come to this.

A week from now, I'll buy a new case, I'll download iOS 10, and my two-year-old iPhone 6 will feel just like an iPhone 7 and I'll have saved $800 in the process. Oh, but can't dip it in a toilet. I'll have to live without that joy.

To be fair that is the only thing the OP addressed, and the only thing I was addressing.

I am going to have a hard time figuring out where I want to go from my almost 2 year old Note 4. I am done with Samsung but not necessarily done with Android. I have an iPad Pro and a Macbook Pro, so it'd make sense to go with the iPhone. I think the presentation went better than I was expecting but I'm still not "excited" about the phone. Guess I'll wait and see what Google comes up with in regards to the next round of Nexus phones.

No new features worth upgrading for? How about water resistance and the fact that I only have an iPhone 6... with iOS 10, there are more 3D touch features that I haven't been able to use since I've only had the 6.

Ha. Both your paragraph are all sorts of wrong.

Apologies, wasn't referring directly to you, too many people are harping on the headphone jack when that's not really the story. The story is a boring iPhone release, the headphone jack is just a part of the issue.

The iPhone 6 is the greatest consumer electronic product ever made, today's phony iPhone 7 validates that. If I were you I'd get an iPhone 6 on the aftermarket for peanuts, get a nice case, update to iOS 10, and enjoy.

I'm a father of 4, my 2 boys have iPhone 6S's, my wife and I have iPhone 6's, and my daughter has an iPhone 5C.

My boys never, ever use the 3D touch features. None of us, ever, have had a situation where our phone's were at risk of water damage and we vacation 3x a year and own a beach house. We will all be running iOS 10 next week just like the iPhone 7 people.

There are no new features worth upgrading for. If you're a swimmer who needs to text in the ocean or a plumber who frequently drops his phone in the potty I can see your enthusiasm.

I'm sorry. But your contributions in this thread appear to be more a case of your trying to convince yourself that you're not missing out on anything. To argue that there is no major difference between the 6 and 6S - nevermind the new 7 - is a rather selective ignoring of some pretty significant features.

Phil Schiller blamed the consumer for the removal of the headphone jack. He said "you keep asking us to make our phones thinner and lighter with better features and better battery life so we can't hold on to this 100 year old technology anymore as we need the space for these other things."

It's as thin as it needs to be or you end up with invisible buttons. The Apple Marketing engine is framing the headphone jack as holding back the development of future iPhones. This is simply marketing spin and not true.

I read a lot of posters on here would defend Apple if they did away with the iPhone screen. I mean, is the screen not almost 100yo "old school" tech?

This just in: That dongle, that many (?) suggest is Apple's reason for their money-grab plot of removing the 3.5mm jack, will cost you.... $9.

9 bucks for something that is made for pennies. Pure profit for Apple.

I've just read a comment on Engadget which has suddenly made it clear to me (and I'm annoyed I didn't realise this a lot sooner). The removal of the jack is for DRM.

And profit. But we all knew that one.

It would be interesting to see a BOM for the dongle. It is more complicated than most people understand. It is not as simple as sticking a round peg into a rectangular hole (even though that's exactly what it looks like).

How is it for DRM? What's going to stop someone from using the adapter?

People still use actual plug in headphones? I've been using BT headphones forever. As a current 6s+ user I don't know if I'll upgrade at this time though.

Economies of scale make this pure profit. If it were a one off then the BOM would be more than 9 bucks I fear.

If I had a 6, yes the 7 would excite me. Sorry I am with a JBed 6S, and I do not need any of these "new" features.

The only thing that is tempting me is the black color & water resistance. I was hoping for a slimmer sexier phone, but honestly the 7 looks no different and I am not blown away. The body itself is not that different, and the screen has not been majorly improved.

Will I get one? Yes, but I will wait out the pre-order process and buy one second hand in a few months.

Overall impression is that we have a 6S sequel, I believe the Verge coined it the 6S- Series 2.

That's what people say in forums when they can't make a valid argument. "You're just jealous" or "you're trying to convince yourself".

Dude, I'm one of those zealots who waited on line at 4AM to buy the new iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 5, and iPhone 6. I want to believe. I want Phil Schiller to fool me into buying a new iPhone every two years, I live for this stuff.

There is no good in the iPhone 7 unless you are a swimmer. That's really what it boils down to. I'm sorry.

The adapter costs $9, and a roll of tinfoil to make a hat out of will only set you back $3.

Cannot agree with this. They are developing products now that are going to be released 3/4 years down the line. To be so adamant that there can be no possible justification for the removal of the 3.5mm, without understanding the roadmap of future products, is a bit shortsighted, imo.

When they remove the physical home button, and only have a glass screen covering the entire front, and need extra space for the processor that will read your fingerprint on the screen... Or need space for the processor that sees a physical manipulation of the screen, to provide a physical cue to your touch - what then?

How do you know that none of that is coming in the years ahead, that requires the removal of the 3.5 now? All speculation of course. But to simply draw a line in the sand now and profess "this is all marketing spin"? Why are you so confident? Do you know something the rest of us don't?
