Just looked and so far the negative has outweighed the positive on ratings... Maybe I am confused but wouldn't people just be happy to have the option of a better graphics card? The older options have just been sad IMO.

I think people vote negative due to the announcement that these new cards will only be supported in 2009 and 2010 MP models...

In fact both my son the digital camera photographer & myself belief that the HP displays are much better that the Apple 30" display.

Since I am also shopping for a second 30 incher and really hate Apple's new 27" display, I am curious which HP model you are talking about here. Care to share?

Thanks

I'm seriously considering upgrading the 3870 in my Mac Pro1,1 to a 5770 once we get confirmation that it will work.

How much of a performance boost is the 5770 over the 3870? I know it's a "lower end card" in the 5-series, but surely there has been enough tech advance between the 3-series and 5-series that it'll still be a considerable gain, with power savings on top of that?

If this card works in my Mac Pro 1,1 it'll probably extend its useful life by another three years at least!

The OP was asking about *audio*. DVI does not support audio. Mini DisplayPort potentially does, but it is not clear MDP to HDMI adaptors supporting audio exist or are readily identifiable vs. those that do.
There are several which work. Griffin Technology sells one but there are others.

I think the performance of the HD 5770 will be close to and maybe greater than that of the HD 4870
It should be much more powerful than the HD 3870.
I am basing this on games under Win7.
Barefeats should have an review of the video cards shortly.

I see Spacedust beat me to the punch.
But as the resolution increases, the HD 5770 starts to outperform the HD 4870.

I'd say it doesn't matter if the average frames per second is 14 or 8.

Both are unplayable.

Well, both cards are pretty much neck and neck depending on the game. It all depends how the game stresses the GPU, which reveals their differences although both have 800 Stream Processors.

No, sorry but no.
Three people who will never gain my respect (not that they need it or want it):
Bill Gates
Michael Dell
Rob Enderle

Uh huh. But Steve is OK, right?

That's all I need to know in future reference to your opinions on here. Thanks.

Does anyone know if the ATI 5770 will work running 10.6.2? I have a friend stuck on 10.6.2 on his 2009 Mac Pro quad-core, which absolutely refuses to update to either 10.6.3 or 10.6.4, kernal panics immediately after the update.
Does this card require 10.6.4?

Yes.

Not sure if anyone referenced this (I don't think I saw it), and it seems true to course that they probably wouldn't actually no, and this is hearsay of hearsay, but this is the first question/answer on the upgrade on the apple store:

Will early 2008 Mac Pro owners be able to use the ATI Radeon HD 5770?

Answer : "I spoke to an Apple engineer and he told me that 2008 models are not compatible with the 5770 due to the chipset on the motherboard. If you have a 2009 model or newer Mac Pro you can, however upgrade to the 5870. Currently, the only good option for 2008 model Mac Pro’s is the 4870 (witch costs $100 more than the new 5770)"
---------------------------------------------------------

Just thought I would share and add to the fearmongering :)

I hope it works on the 2008 as I want it, can't wait for someone to try it!

Considering the other answer is this:

I just got off the phone with an apple representative and was told that this card takes up two slots. She told me that my early 2008 8 core Mac Pro3,1 does not have the slots to support this card. So until someone actually installs it in an early 2008 Mac Pro it's a question mark.

...I'm willing to stick with Barefeats on this one.

At groths, latest news says "Apple 5870 works in 2006 and newer mac pro’s"

is this confirmed? Why don't I see this posted for sure anywhere here?

Just a note...

Even if the 5870 does work in a 2006 or 2008 Mac Pro, no Apple representative can say that it does. If they do, it implies support.

Any Apple source is going to tell you that it's not going to work. I'd wait for 3rd party confirmation. I wouldn't expect Apple engineering to say that it will work.

Also, keep in mind that if Apple promises support, it has to work with the restore disk that came with the machine. The 5870 ain't going to work with the 10.5 disk that came with the 2008 Mac Pro. Same reason the GeForce 120 GT was never supported on the 08 Mac Pro.

Yay Apple!

HD5770 is listed at $249
HD5870 is listed at $449

So at current PC card prices, theres not a big difference between the 5870 models, and would be an easier way to go about it (also includes the cables, as the PC card doesn't). This may change as the PC versions continue to get lower in cost.

But the 5770 is ~$90 or so more for the Mac Edition, so some may be more interested in it for this particular model.

to cut a long story short
bought a sapphire HD 5770(reference) one year ago for 99.- Euros
works in my 2007 hack with 10.6.4 flawlessly (and in win 7 on the same rig)
I don`t believe in angels anymore(even if their name is steve)
first apple 1991 (15 macs- 1991-2007)

best
as (ipod touch)

It's a lot easier to get a PC version working in a hackintosh though (no need to flash). Just need drivers.

But the 5870 is supported on the 09 Mac Pro, despite the lack of drivers on the install discs.

sorry if this is in the wrong thread but ive searched and havent found an answer;

im using my MP 08 90% of the time in windows and since these new GPU's may not even work i'm going for a windows-only card.. can i buy whatever card i want? do i need to buy any special apple power-cables? ty!
Yes, you can buy whatever card you want, but if it doesn't have EFI support (= Mac Pro specific support), you will not be able to boot OS X (obviously) and, for example, choose a boot drive right after booting (normally you hold "Alt" to see the options).

To connect a card you'll most likely need two power cables, I bought mine from eBay (example).
