Is there no way to upgrade the powersupply in a MacPro such that one could power (2) 5870s?

Well you could route 2x6 pin power connectors directly from the psu, of course if you know the pin ups. A couple of weeks ago I offered the service manuals for the mac pros ranging from 2006 to 2009, but according to Rominator's own words, I could basically stick them in my arss. So basically I guess that you're by yourself now.

Well I was planning on upgrading my woeful GT120 to the 5770 for the extra vram but obviously now it's $449 or bust with the 5870. Yippie.

Plus did Apple ditch NVIDIA because Premiere/AE CS5 utilize their CUDA for fast rendering and they didn't want competition with FCP?

I hear you, but things were getting kind of slow...and given that the only reason I want the new card is so I can drive the new monitor, I thought I'd ask.

sorry if this is in the wrong thread but ive searched and havent found an answer;

im using my MP 08 90% of the time in windows and since these new GPU's may not even work i'm going for a windows-only card.. can i buy whatever card i want? do i need to buy any special apple power-cables? ty!

I have been contacted by someone claiming first hand knowledge that the Mac Pro cards are in fact EBC and WILL work in 2006 and up Mac Pros.

I am unable to offer any additional info at this time. Let's hope this info is correct.

It works, it's just not officially supported.

ok, thanks for answering but i've decided to go the outer route (4-6 weeks estimated delivery and my MP is stone dead right now.), so my other question still stands: will i need additional power cables for a pc-card?

For the hd5870 you'll need 2x6 pin cables, given that you already have one from the KIA 8800 gt, all you need is another cable.

ok, but im going for a Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB. Will that work with just one cable?

It just requires 1x6 pin cable, but I'm not sure Netkas has rom or workaround for it if you want to use that card or any other card no official card on OSx, for windows there is no problem.

Ebc

Yes, and you are STILL an idiot, and I STILL wasn't the one who called you out on it. Go away.

BTW, to the intelligent and sane Mac Folk reading this, I have been contacted by someone claiming first hand knowledge that the Mac Pro cards are in fact EBC and WILL work in 2006 and up Mac Pros.

I really hope this is true :)

Apple = Total FAIL

I think it's a complete crock that Apple are shutting off support for the 2008 Mac Pro, saying that the 5870 is only compatible with the 2009 and 2010 Mac Pros. Most of us know that the 5870 WILL work with the 2008. But we all know the reason why they're doing it: they want 2008 MP owners to upgrade to an entirely new machine in order to get the better graphics card.

On the other side of the coin, I'm sure the ROM will surface and we can buy an appropriate PC version of the card and flash it, thereby getting the 5870 fully working in our 2008 Mac Pros while simultaneously giving the finger to Apple by purchasing someone else's card. :D

Only Apple could take their one expandable computer and make the expandability of it nearly MOOT by artificially denying the use of newer video cards in models that are over 2 years old. There is no technical reason they won't work (sad that you could probably get one to work in a 2007 Hackintosh with little difficulty; I suppose people will have to start hacking the OS for Apple's OWN hardware since they won't support anything older than 2 years old these days for hardly anything). They simply want to FORCE you to buy a whole new $2500+ computer just to get a newer graphics card. Greed knows no bounds, it seems. :rolleyes:

Quite frankly, Bill Gates looks like an angel next to Steve Jobs these days. :rolleyes:

So I was excited about the 5770 and 5870 coming out since my mac has an outdated 2600 HD XT in it. But my Mac Pro is 2007, am I pretty much screwed when it comes to decent graphics card options?
