Radio Shack sells mobile phones. It sells mobile phone accessories. And I'm pretty sure it sells plans on multiple providers.

And it has AT&T, so it makes sense for them to sell the iPhone. When I worked there decades ago, Radio Shack was cutting edge. But the company needs someone with a new vision. It's a bit long in the tooth now, sort of a poor man's Sharper Image. Since they've scaled back their electronic parts that used to be their hallmark, I rarely go there anymore.

Seriously though, "The Shack"-- is that for real?

That's my reaction, too. It wouldn't surprise me, though. But that name would spell the end of the company.

radio shack stores are garbage... I hate buying anything there... and most of the employees don't know anything about anything.

What?! Another place proles can get it?! Wal-Mart already sells iPhones.. any old Joe can get one now, what?! Ugh they're ruining the "image"!!!!

So .........

seriously, who cares? The only reason I came to post is MacRumors is putting "the" in front of Apple products. It's not "The iPhone", it's "iPhone".

I love that terminology, just like how nike calls everything singular. Hi, I picked up iPhone, sock, and shoe lace today! Oh I also got Jordan Shoe!! I almost bought iMac, but it had reservations about me buying it because I don't own a BMW

Not necessarily. Your post reads like a grammatically challenged person. I went to Louvre to see Mona Lisa?

The iPhone is a singular entity, just like the Big Mac. Sure you could say "iPhones" or "Sony Bravias" or "a" iPhone, but in this circumstance "the" is perfectly fine. "The Ford Fusion", "the British Navy", etc.

Radio Shack is such a joke, I can't even remember the last time I went there to purchase anything. I just can't believe they are in business, anytime I walk by a store its dead empty.

im sorry but everybody here is an idiot. The more places the iphone is offered, the better market penetration Apple has. The iPhone isnt like the Mac that its all premium and omg needs to look like this and that to be sold.

Its a mass market product. Just like how the iPod is sold every time, the iPhone is the same as well. Otherwise, in a few years, the Android is going to destroy the market share of the iPhone because it is sold everywhere in every phone.

Yes and no. The quality of the market penetration matters too. You could hand iPhones to a guy with a card table on the corner in the middle of downtown New York. More exposure? You bet. Would Apple touch that with a 50-foot pole? No way.

To a lot of people (including me), Radio Shack has lost its roots and become more of a low-end miscellaneous electronics crap store and other various wanna-be's. I can barely go there for REAL electronic parts (like resistors, diodes, etc.) anymore. It's tucked into the back corner of the store.

wow, a ton of arrogant babble about Radio Shack.

the advantage? It's ubiquitous. 'The Shack' is everywhere; not just in upscale areas (like Apple Stores), or major cities (think Best Buy). The iPhone will come to small town America and every suburb and exurb....while that role is traditionally played by Wal-Mart, the Radio Shack experience is arguably more focused and less supercenter.

Radio Shack sucks and needs to go out of business.
Yes, they're stuck in the 90's.
HORRIBLE...

I never go to "The Shack" for anything but cheapo, one time use stuff(at least that is what happens with most of the stuff I buy there)...

HOW CAN THEY SELL THE IPHONE!!?
settle down, your precious iPhone is made of the same plastic and chinese parts as the rest of the phones and things they carry in there.
Why iPhone elitists are downplaying the significance of the iPhone being present in more retail outlets is beyond me.

Oh well. *shrugs*

agreed... double :rolleyes::rolleyes:
They're too busy worrying about how uncool their phone might be if too many people have them....oh brother. Enjoy what you've got for yourself, who cares where you get your phone from. Anyone complain that Wal-Mart sells the iPhone?

I know! I don't know anyone who buys anything there but el cheap stuff! They must all be selling drugs out the back door!

I think you just answered your own question right there buddy.

jk

I work at a Radioshack... lol. It's just a job for another two years until I'm working as a civil engineer. Believe me, I hate radioshack more than all of you combine. Yeah, some associates are stupid as hell, but some of us know a fair amount "anything about anything". Nice of you all to generalize the employees. I'm not standing up for radioshack in any case, but are your heads so far up your a$$es that you think the iPhone is too good to be sold anywhere? It's good for Apple and good for the iPhone, how is complaining going to change anything? Radioshack ditched their original purpose, but that's what a store has to do to stay alive... evolve with the times. Yeah, it's being slowly renamed to "The Shack" which is lame as hell, but what are ya gonna do. Radioshack is far from dead, you would not believe how much money is blown at the store level,

well, I suppose if one doesn't want to buy their iPhone a Radio Shack, they certainly don't have to. No gun is held to one's head.
People need to get out of the Apple elitist mentality. The market share for almost every Apple product is growing. They obviously have a plan.

Next, the iPhone will come to Sears, Target, and The Wiz....

I think the only time we'll have to be concerned is if they start offering it at the Dollar Tree. :p

7-11 comes right after McDonald's starts selling them in their Happy iMeals.

I'm seeing a lot more accusations of elitism that I'm seeing elitist comments. I think there is an exceedingly small number of people who care where Apple products are sold. I think there's a far larger number of people who enjoy calling Apple users (or just about anyone these days) elitist.

Why so much chatter about Radio Shack then, rather than cheers all around that the iPhone will have more shelf space? For one, it's precisely because no one cares who sells it-- that doesn't seem like news. The fact that Radio Shack is still alive, and the current state of their death spiral, however, is far more entertaining.

Imagine a front page story that Studebaker is going to start shipping iPod docks standard in their new model cars. The thread that followed would almost certainly be "Studebaker is still making cars?!"

I do NOT hope Radio Shack goes out of business. Sure, they carry a lot of products that Best Buy already carries, BUT Radio Shack also sells a lot of things that Best Buy does NOT sell. Best Buy is great if you don't want variety and selection and just want a great price. If you want variety and selection, go to Frys Electronics, and if you need wiring or transistors or miscellaneous gadgets, only Radio Shack and Frys has those. Best Buy does NOT have variety and selection.
:apple:

Oh dear........Old Radioscrap...ha..so like the three nerds who still shop there can buy an iPhone along with their remote control cars.. :p :D

Ok, Radiocrap :D is ok, like if you need that weird little connector for something, but i'm kinda surprised they are still around.

Every time I go into Radio Shack for an electronic part or some gadget they never have it. Now they want to be a cell phone store. If they are going to start selling Apple products or be another AT&T store they will be just like everyone else. I don't know how they stay in business. Why doesn't Microsoft take them over and turn them into MS stores? At least it would be a more interesting experience that looking at a bunch of phones.

Radio Shack sells iPods. It sells iPod accessories. It sells iPod-docking clocks, radios and so on. It sells headphones, speakers and connector cables that can be used with iPods.

Radio Shack sells mobile phones. It sells mobile phone accessories. And I'm pretty sure it sells plans on multiple providers.

So it seems entirely sensible for Radio Shack to sell iPhones. Having one more place in town I can get iPhones and iPhone stuff isn't the end of the world.

They stay in business because 90% of the money is made from their commodities trading and market making. The stores are just for tax purposes.

All of these post, including the one from the guy that works at Radioshack just show the Apple elites attitude. The fact is that most people have purchased a phone from Radioshack at some point in time and they didn't even know it. Radioshack owns almost every kiosk type cell phone station (read mall cell phone booth and Sams cell phone booth). They are generally in the top 5 retailers of cell phones. Not to mention the fact that they pride themselves on having a location with in X number of miles (I forget the number) of every home in American.

While their selection is not what it used to be, they do carry a lot of small parts that you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else.

Wait, they don't already sell them already??? Lame.

RadioShack has to be one of the poorest-run companies.

I equate them to one of these MLB teams like the Blue Jays or Brewers that never invest money into being a contender.

The same long-time customers shop there and RadioShack is fine with that, making just enough to get by.

No ambitions on improving or being a winner. It's quite pathetic actually.

Radio Shack needs to go out of business. Selling the iPhone will simply keep them in business which is EXACTLY WHAT WE DON'T WANT.

They tried to charge me $78 in-store for a battery that I got for $6 online.

I think it will be great to get the iphone out there in more stores. Target would be awesome to increase sales.

In some areas, there are nearly as many Radio Shack stores as there are McDonald's. This wider availability can only be good exposure for Apple's lower priced phones.

And to think that Radio Shack's TRS-80 was once Apple's biggest competition, or close to it.
