I dont have AppleCare either. If it gets damaged to the point of uselessness I would look at the house insurance.

AC+ doesnt cover cosmetic damage. If the unit works, its not covered. So you would need to crack the screen or take it for a swim. Or if your American just shoot it, everyone over there has a gun right?

Yes, but which gun to use? Apple won't give you an out of warranty for catastrophic damage, so the shot gun and .45 are out:(. Maybe a .22 right through the home button? Best option now is probably to shoot it with a water gun and claim for water damage:)

I did not buy any Applecare protection.

So it looks like I can still buy Applecare+ protection and then an additional $79 to get it replaced, is that correct?

Incorrect. Ever hear of something called insurance fraud?

You're within 30 days, so you can get AppleCare+ over the phone by having them run a diagnostic test over the internet. Not 100% honest, but within the rules as your phone is still fully functional. (Just cosmetic damage, and they don't cover that anyway).
Wow. Just...wow. The entitlement mentality of some people is simply mind-boggling.

To any of you losers who advocate this kind of stuff: it's called PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. Just because you ****ed up your personal property doesn't mean you should bilk other people or businesses to cover your stupidity/incompetence/ignorance.

If it works, why not just keep it, it does not look that bad.

I put annoying scratches on both the front glass and back case of my 5 the first week I had it when it was in my pocket, I was rubbing against rocks and forgot about it, life happens and it's not the end of the world, it's just a device, not your limbs....

AppleCare wont replace but AppleCare+ will.

If you have AppleCare+ it'll cost you $79 to get it fixed. This covers against accidental damage, like dropping, water damage etc.
If you dont it'll cost you around $229, your biggest problem is finding a store with phones in stock to replace it with.

You may also be able to claim on your house insurance, if you dont mind your premiums going up.

$269, and most store have the service parts instock already.

Have you check your credit card policy see if they have purchase protection? Maybe they will cover the accidentally damage.

Of course AppleCare + covers cosmetic damage. Thats the whole friggen point of the +.
However if you were to take a gun to it according to the terms and conditions that is not covered.

Your best bet is to see if you can get the $229 replacement. Since it's already damaged they wont' sell AppleCare+. However, since it's still functional (pretty amazing considering it was run over by a truck) they might not accept it unless it stops working.

OTOH, the post above about the battery may be valid. Since there could be damage that you can't see, you might be able to purchase a replacement device. They'll send your old one back to the factory and it will come back as someone else's warranty replacement after it gets all fixed up with a new case and battery.

The Apple case is next to impossible to take off (and it's easy to damage it in the process - do this over a SOFT surface), and it covers the back entirely. Maybe that's a cheaper option for now.

With your track record, I'd do that and then just live with the damage you've done until you actually break it, then get it replaced. It's gonna happen at some point.

Must bring it in if purchased from a Carrier for inspection.

As jbzcar mentioned just above. Its $ 269.00 now

OP, just throw a cheap case on it and charge it to the game. And be thankful the screen is still good :)

Or you could try a repair place when OEM back panels start coming out (although I *think* this will require the complete disassembly of the phone...someone will correct me if I'm wrong).

Umm. Seriously? Its not insurance. It's an extended warranty that provides a reduced cost accidental damage replacement as a perk. That is not the same thing as insurance.

It's not cheating Apple out of anything. Apple is choosing to allow it. They want you to buy AppleCare+. Accidental damage replacement isn't free. They've run the numbers and at two replacements plus the plan cost it is a net positive for them overall.

If they really cared, then a full cosmetic inspection would be mandatory. At this point, all they want to know is that the phone is in working order. Remote diagnostics will do that. So will an genius. When I got my phone signed up, they literally didn't been bother taking it out of the case. Turned it on, glanced at it, gave it the ok.

Nowhere does it say that the phone must be pristine to qualify for AppleCare+. It says that it must either pass an inspection in person (criteria not listed), OR pass a remote diagnostic, and be within 30 days of purchase.

As long as the OP plays by apple's rules and guidelines, there is NO foul. It's Apple's game, not yours. Just play by their rules.

Now if he wanted to somehow finagle or beg for a free exchange? That's messed up.

And I will play by Apple's rules. I respect the company brand and don't expect to get a free device in return for an accident that I caused unless my newly purchased Applecare+ allows me to do this. I'll probably fork out the money and buy a new gold one anyway when stock is readily available. Hell, I love the iPhone so much I would pay $1,000 if that was the retail price I had to pay. Think I got off subject there but anyway...

What do you think an extended warranty is? It's basically a form of insurance that covers repair/replacement of your product should anything go wrong. The "reduced cost" you mentioned is basically a deductible. And just like insurance, Apple is relying on statistical analyses that tell them what percentage of people who buy these insurance policies will actually attempt to file a claim on them. If 100% of people who buy AppleCare actually utilize it, you'd see the price of it go substantially higher, or Apple would stop offering it.

It's not cheating Apple out of anything. Apple is choosing to allow it. They want you to buy AppleCare+. Accidental damage replacement isn't free. They've run the numbers and at two replacements plus the plan cost it is a net positive for them overall.
Then maybe you'd care to explain why Apple has a policy where they want to actually inspect your product before you can buy an AppleCare plan after you've purchased it, hmm? If they didn't do that and allowed you to buy AppleCare+ only after you've damaged your phone, you really don't think that would hurt their bottom line?

As long as the OP plays by apple's rules and guidelines, there is NO foul. It's Apple's game, not yours. Just play by their rules.
So says you. The fact is, the OP ran over his iPhone with his car. What you're describing completely goes against the spirit of what Apple intended with their AppleCare plan, and you're just trying to exploit a loophole in their policy by using a literal interpretation of YOU think is acceptable.

What if the screen had cracked or shattered but the phone otherwise passed an online diagnostic? Would you say this would still be an acceptable scenario?

And I will play by Apple's rules. I respect the company brand and don't expect to get a free device in return for an accident that I caused unless my newly purchased Applecare+ allows me to do this. You should be applauded and respected for having such a mature attitude about this.

And probably no AppleCare + either we bet. Now you pay for it.

Majority of people I know who use their phones without a case don't have AppleCare+ and rarely scratch their phone.

Just because you have a case on your phone, doesn't make you a more careful person.

If you have AC+ put back under the car and drive over a few more times-than replace

Even so, you might want to consider getting AppleCare+ anyway, in case you end up with another accident that renders the phone inoperable.

And for those crying insurance fraud: relax. Apple probably won't let the OP file a claim for this anyone, since the phone is still working fine.

Wait a sec... you drove over your phone and it still works? Wow. Yeah, like others have stated, just throw a nice looking case over it.

I did this to my 3GS a month or so after i got it, but the damage was opposite- the glass was shattered and the back was fine. The screen back light didn't work, but the phone actually worked. I took it to an Apple Store expecting to pay the $200 for a replacement, but they gave me a new refurb no charge. One of those experiences that keeps me coming back.

I have a Space Gray 64GB iPhone 5S and had an accidental damage incident this past weekend.

As I was getting out of my truck, it slipped out of my lap and on to the gravel driveway. When it was time to leave, I got back in my truck and backed up. Unknowingly, my iPhone was being ran over.

The back side of the iPhone was down on the gravel and the glass part was ran over. It made contact with my T/A KOs.

The front glass suffered no scratchs, marks, cracks, or anything.

Will Apple replace this?

Image

OMG, I'm sorry to say but maybe you should have been more careful with your phone. That really sucks, how could you forget it in your lap? lol

I don't think Apple will replace, unless you have Apple +.

Cases cause more destruction than not using one. Cases trap in moisture and dirt. Sometimes the damage is permanent. I have NEVER used a case and all my iPhones look mint after a year.

Wrong. My friends iPhone 4 without a case looks like hell compared to my 4S that looks mint with a case. If you baby your phone then yes it's possible to keep in good condition without a case but generally a cased phone will look way better than an uncased phone after 2 years.

And trapping dirt is really only a issue on the 5/5S because the body scratches easily, and what moisture does a case hold? I don't take my phone into the shower, or put in the fridge.

It makes absolutely no sense to say that an iPhone without a case will stay nicer, absolutely not.

Battlescars...

Exactly. If OP was a Klingon, this would bring him smiles. :D

Look man, now you won't have to obsess about its appearance any more. You are now FREE to enjoy the phone! People driving used cars are the happiest. ;)
