Majority of people I know who use their phones without a case don't have AppleCare+ and rarely scratch their phone.

Just because you have a case on your phone, doesn't make you a more careful person.

Yes it does. ;) I'm very careful, even with a case. Darn thing cost too much not to be. :D

I am still trying to figure out how you ran over your phone.
You say it was in your lap and fell when you got up?
Didn't you feel the phone fall off your lap and hear it hit the ground?
Bad luck day for you,I baby and take care of my phone so I pay attention and always no where it's at.
But I do understand if you were really busy or got distracted.id definitely if I were you be putting the new one you get in a case.
Good luck to you,let us know how it goes.

You won't be able to purchase Applecare+. You have to buy it with the phone or take phone in for inspection, and they'll deny the purchase because it has pre-existing damage.

INCORRECT...

in store, no they wont.

if the phone works, he can still call over the phone and all they do is run a program to make sure the phone works.

call Apple OP and add applecare plus. you will get it as long as the phone works.

INCORRECT...

CORRECT! :)

For my and my wife's phones I called AppleCare and purchased AppleCare+ right after they arrived. No trip to the store necessary. For my wife's phone they asked if it had been damaged or exposed to water and I told her I hadn't had time to do that yet but the day wasn't over. :)

What do you think an extended warranty is? It's basically a form of insurance that covers repair/replacement of your product should anything go wrong. The "reduced cost" you mentioned is basically a deductible. And just like insurance, Apple is relying on statistical analyses that tell them what percentage of people who buy these insurance policies will actually attempt to file a claim on them. If 100% of people who buy AppleCare actually utilize it, you'd see the price of it go substantially higher, or Apple would stop offering it.

Then maybe you'd care to explain why Apple has a policy where they want to actually inspect your product before you can buy an AppleCare plan after you've purchased it, hmm? If they didn't do that and allowed you to buy AppleCare+ only after you've damaged your phone, you really don't think that would hurt their bottom line?

So says you. The fact is, the OP ran over his iPhone with his car. What you're describing completely goes against the spirit of what Apple intended with their AppleCare plan, and you're just trying to exploit a loophole in their policy by using a literal interpretation of YOU think is acceptable.

What if the screen had cracked or shattered but the phone otherwise passed an online diagnostic? Would you say this would still be an acceptable scenario?

You should be applauded and respected for having such a mature attitude about this.

It's still not insurance. There is a difference. There is a reason why AppleCare does NOT cover theft, loss, or catastrophic damage. That would make it insurance and set them up for an entirely different regulatory structure. This is an extended warranty, with generous terms, but a warranty nonetheless. It covers repairs. The fact that Apple finds it more convenient to handle some repairs with swaps is moot, they're still classified as repairs. Bring in a device with irreparable damage and you will be denied, because it is not insurance. If you want an insurance policy, there are plenty out there.

In any case, from what he's posted, OP is getting AppleCare+. Not to game the system, not to get a free replacement, but because (as I stated) the incident was a wake up call that he needs it given his phone use situation.

Make up your mind. Is it mature or not? He's getting the plan.

It is not an extended warranty either as that only extends coverage provided by the manufacturer, which in this case is defects. It is a service plan with accidental coverage.;)

He can't get AppleCare+ at the retail store. If the person does their job they'll deny him the coverage as the checklist they go through asks if the phone is in the original condition, fully functional, and has not come in contact with liquid.

I have a Space Gray 64GB iPhone 5S and had an accidental damage incident this past weekend.

As I was getting out of my truck, it slipped out of my lap and on to the gravel driveway. When it was time to leave, I got back in my truck and backed up. Unknowingly, my iPhone was being ran over.

The back side of the iPhone was down on the gravel and the glass part was ran over. It made contact with my T/A KOs.

The front glass suffered no scratchs, marks, cracks, or anything.

Will Apple replace this?

Image

They'll replace it for a charge. Don't think they should replace it for free seeing as you caused damage to the device.

That's awesome that it survived....a few years back I was driving and hit some black ice and flipped my vehicle, my iPhone (first gen)flew out the broken window, got run over by my sliding 4runner and sat in a puddle if water. I found it as I was walking the scene and it didn't break. Let it dry out for a day and it was working like it was new!
Some phones survive some don't. Try to make a pitch to Apple and see if they want to buy it from you! Telling them they can market that it too can take a licking and keep on ticking!....lol...just kidding....they'd probably just laugh at you.
Good luck!

Holy ****, that damage looks like nothing considering it got run over by a truck. You are extraordinarily fortunate.

Save your money and buy a case instead to hide the scratches. Don't throw away money over cosmetic issues, you have a perfectly functional phone.

Does anybody actually know what the diagnostic reveals when you call in over the phone?

How would they know if he already had water damage or physical damage?

you're acting like you do everything by the book

i'm sure while you typed this you listened to a song that you downloaded illegally

or you are downloading a movie off torrents

or you watched a tv episode on youtube

you are using a computer which more than likely has or has had 1 piece of software obtained illegally

etc etc..

pls go. you're not perfect.

Pretty straightforward I believe:

With AppleCare+ - Yes, for the $79.99 fee

W/out AppleCare+ - Yes, for the retail cost of $649.99

I don't think it's 650 without apple care+. I think it would be around 240 or something like that for a replacement.

Nope, done none of those things. And even if I did, I wouldn't go around telling others it was OK either, which is the point. It has nothing to do with being perfect, which I most definitely am not - I just appear to have better morals than you do.

By your reasoning, nobody should ever say anything because nobody's perfect, right? Lame.

You can crawl back under your rock now.

Huh, if that's true then that's really cool. So basically as long as you have the device then you are paying $250 or less to replace it even out of warranty lol. Not to really trash the other guy but Samsung would charge the full retail price, as well as every other major manufacturer I believe.

it's okay, i won't forward this to your local police department.

go outside and do something rather than tell people what's moral and what isn't on an internet forum. these people can make decisions for themselves.

you think Apple doesn't already know there's loopholes in their system? of course they do and they're okay with it because they still make a profit on warranty exchanges. if they weren't, then they would make it so Applecare + can only be made at the time of purchase, NO IFS, ANDS OR BUTS.

Well I was just joking about the case.

I don't think any case will protect a phone from being ran over.

but in this case (no pun intended) if there is a case, the back with not have those scratches.

to OP, try going to Apple Store and see what they will say. tell them honestly what happened.
