I see all kinds of distortion in that image. Excellent example of my exact point. Oh, and I have 20/15 vision with no measurable astigmatism, thanks for asking.

I can’t speak for the S6 or S7 edge as I have never used them, all I’m saying is that the s8 Plus is nothing like his description. The edge is only about 5mm of each side and does not display any distortion in use, not even for reading technical drawings like building plans.

PS
Those lines in your image don’t actually correspond to the edge area on the actual phone.

Here’s edge to edge text, no distortion.

by the way, your image isn’t even of the actual S8, it’s a mock up render from 2 months before release.

The Galaxy S8 and S8+ were only unveiled on 29 March 2017.

You’re right, didn’t read the actual article. Just found image on google and did a rough estimate. Can you post another image with text stretching to the very edges of the display? I suspect it will show bit more distortion.

Top of the line display is ideal for taking, editing, and viewing photos and reading text in emails and websites.

Super powerful chip is great for multitasking speed, app launch speed, Face ID speed, and camera efficiency.

Holding in your hand small smartphone screen and watching a 2 hour movie is so 2008. That's what the iPad is for. Games? That's for consoles.

Ok. Buy me an iPad. Refuse? Then stop being so damn anal and pompous. Grow up and realise the world doesn’t revolve around you.

If you can afford a $1,250 iPhone you can afford a $329 iPad.

Apple makes premium luxury products. Android is for the budget conscious. Choose wisely.

The notch generally ‘disappears’ when watching video.

The real (1st world) problem is the need to zoom-in a video to bring it full screen. This demonstrates that a skinny forehead would have been better in order to have video be full screen by default.

But they REALLY wanted those rounded corners, which do look snazzy, but hey, notch.

Dude are you for real? I’m paying for my phone every month I have it. Besides, you’re the one who believes iPads alone are for media consumption. (Also iirc iPads are 4:3. I’d sooner not watch my content in such an archaic aspect ratio thank you.)

Anyhoo. Going way off topic here. Apologies mods. Allowed myself to get baited.

Yeah, the $900 Galaxy Note 8 sure is for the budget conscious.

Apple sells products at multiple price points, from the $350 iPhone SE, up to the 256GB iPhone X, just like the Android competition.

Just because Samsung decides to overprice a $299 Android at $899 doesn't mean it is some world-class product. It just means that Samsung is trying to create a flagship and people are falling for it.

If we are to turn a blind eye to the Galaxy Note 8's deficiencies and focus just on pricing, the iPhone X is $1250 or 40% more expensive, about the delta between a BMW and a comparably equipped Kia.

And that's the most expensive Android. We know the real price battle occurs between the $0 Android's being given away by budget carriers and the entry level iPhone SE which sits at $349.

Fake online personas start to unravel when the person forgets what they’ve previously said. He’s honestly the first iPhone user I have ever encountered who thinks people are impressed by his phone. I don’t believe the other claims he’s made about Range Rovers, BMW’s, Rolex’s, and his trophy wife. That all screams porky pies to me to try and enhance his online profile.

I believe this will hold true until the tech to put all these sensors under the screen is resolved (3-5 years).

I would agree with this. I think the notch will be here for the next generation of iPhones, but then there's no telling what type of technology we will translate into 3 to 5 years from now, which by then, it's rumored that micro LED will be the next course of technology over OLED.

Samsung isnt just trying to do anything but they actually manage to do everything. Without Samsung our world would be less interesting and better to thank Samsung that they try and go forward and other companies, even Apple, follows them..

And the notch.. i quess we wont see it in the future.

I think you are confusing important with interesting. I can’t think of one Samsung product that was unexpected or incredible. They make mediocre designs but they are a massive conglomerate with an incredibly diverse portfolio of unremarkable products except their NAND, it’s superb on the prosumer end.

I wouldn’t say their latest phones are not great looking. Most of what we’ve seen on the iPhone X came from previous Samsung phones.

I only watch things on my x when on the bike in the gym. Anything else I use the iPad

So no the notch doesn’t bother me

Note 8 is an amazing device

Many think the best on the market

To say it isn’t is not doing research

Most? What are you referring to?
Oled display, near bezeless display, wireless charging, facial recognition.

Whatever way you can want to spin it Samsung had all of those things before Apple.

I’ve watched YouTube videos and I also watched a TV episode in bed. The notch didn’t bother me one bit. I liked the way it fills the whole screen.

They are an Oem that makes screens and they probably designed it before anybody else, Samsung screen still has bezels the phone is basically an ad for Apple to buy their screens and use it properly. Wireless charging is an industry thing, Samsung had it for 3 generations before Apple followed suit. Samsung’s face recognition was an Android feature way before Samsung rehashed it. It’s still more of a convenience feature you can’t even use it to buy apps.

Same thing with curved edge displays, it’s a technology showcase, Samsung has no idea what to do with it, they just put it on there hoping something will come out of it. Granted, Apple did the same with 3D Touch but at least it does not take away from the overall experience.

Like I said, Samsung is a technology company not a product company. They make proof of concept stuff that never works properly, Apple waits till they perfect the technology and they build it in way that’s seamless.

Not saying Samsung is not in the race, they are, they’re probably at the same level at engineering level but when it comes to overall product refinement and design philosophy, Samsung is pretty clueless.

The actual product design of Samsung’s latest phones is very impressive though. I used to look at the S4 and S5 with the plastic backs and you could really feel the iPhone was more refined with a premium feel. Now the S7 and S8 have matched Apple for physical quality and when you hold them you really do feel like you’re holding a high quality product like the iPhone. They reintroduced glass and aluminium to the flagship end of the market and really put the pressure on Apple.

The all screen display on the S8 to me looks a lot nicer than the iPhone X despite the presence of some bezel. Bezels don’t bother me in the slightest but the notch is more intrusive to look at ‘for me’. The only problem with a Samsung is it doesn’t run iOS and for me that is more important than anything. It pays to know what other manufacturers are doing though and I won’t claim allegiance to any brand I just use what works best for me. Android doesn’t quite deliver yet.

The notch and the lack of TouchID are the sole reason why I chose to go with the iPhone 8 Plus and not the X.

For whatever reason nobody can justify why the notch is there (other than for people to know that you have the X) and I’m still having a hard time justifying why there was no TouchID.

I know people will say it’s the sensors and blah blah blah...then why does no other manufacturer have a notch?

If there was no notch and TouchID then I’d be sending this message from my iPhone X and not 8 Plus.

No other manufacturers have a notch? Look at the hideous lg v20 where a block on the top left corner is cut out for the camera.

Yes, they are making prettier phones but so is everybody else. Look at essential phone knock it out of the park in first attempt. It’s not a differentiator anymore. However, there is only so much that can be done given the price, Apple had to raise price at least $200 for the oled and stainless steel. Samsung will have to do the same if they want to make it out of more premium materials.

To each their own but Samsung’s garish tuning is more offensive to me. I am not saying notch is ideal or even that it’s a feature, it’s just inevitable, next year everyone will do it. There is simply no way around it for now. Samsung will have a smaller notch if they don’t copy Apple instantly otherwise same shape, they will also include notch area in stated screen size for sure.

I would say it was more OLED that drove the price a little higher not the use of stainless steel. The raw material and manufacturing costs of stainless in comparison to aluminium are pretty insignificant. Marketing tends to assure the consumer it’s more premium and this helps justify the cost to them.

I agree Samsung are not the only android manufacturer offering a premium feel. One thing is for certain and that is Apple are no longer in a class of their own in terms of product design. I’m not particularly bothered if Samsung and others copy the notch, I’m more concerned as to whether my next iPhone will have one? I hope I can avoid it until the alternative comes in.

The cost mainly comes in the form for retooling and development, it’s a harder material work with too. I think aluminum as raw material is actually more expensive and high quality plastics are even more expensive but much easier to form. Also the face id tech surely adds to the cost. I am pretty sure the the notch is here to stay on iPhone. You might be right about the oled but I am skeptical wether Apple paid above and beyond for it given that lcd can be made into pretty much similar shape.

I am probably in the minority but the screen to me is actually a mixed experience, it looks great in sunlight but the blue shift is not ideal. Plus the sub-pixel rendering lines/matrix is quite noticeable sometimes. More-so than Samsung phones due to lower pixel density.

How would you know what the Samsung galaxy note 8’s deficiencies are when you don’t know what a galaxy note 8 is?

I decided to read a few posts from disappointed owners in Android forums. Not too difficult or time consuming. The jealousy displayed of Apple products made me smile.
