Samsung Note 8 and S8 don’t have a notch, so why did Apple?\s

Cause if the notch wasn't there the first thing people would say about it is "oh look they copied samsung.

Anyway, lucky for me I don't watch movies or youtube on my phone so the notch is a non issue for me.

Well the Samsung galaxy note 8 costs the same as the iPhone 8 Plus. Does that make the 8 plus a phone for cheapskates.

I have no idea what a Galaxy Note 8 is. What I do know is that many companies release a so-called “flagship” product at an inflated price to help elevate their damaged brand image.

Android exists to bring cheap iPhone knockoffs to the masses, so this feels like a marketing strategy. Looks like it’s working with all the “but blah blah Android is more expensive than the iPhone X” responses. I’ll sell you a Kia for $65,000 if you like. Doesn’t make it a BMW.

coming from a 8+ (that i gave the wife) i can honestly say that i was not a fan of the notch when i first purchased it either (yes i knew it had it before purchasing but tried anyway) I love the + but have really came to appreciate the X. I actually kind of like the notch. It gives the phone a distinct look when on.

The notch was one of the reasons I got the 8 Plus, but not the only reason. I also prefer landscape mode and the wider screen. Hopefully an X Plus will give me the best of both worlds next year.

I really don't get the big kerfuffle. Would you like it better if Apple had just made the notch extend across the entire width of the phone like Android makers do? Not sure why that is any better. This way, you can use software to "remove" the notch if you don't like it... or keep it if you don't care (like me).

Apple made sure that it's flagship iPhone didn't look like every other iPhone out there.

Vertical camera on the back, notch on the front. Let's the people around you know that you've got something different. I think it's cool. Just the other night my son noticed that the guy at the table next to us at the Mexican restaurant was checking out my X, the only reason he knew what it was in that dark environment was the notch on the display.

I'm over this notch and I'm tired of hearing people trying to defend it. It's awful to try to consume media on (why should I have to accept a hole in the side of my screen) and then if I choose to not use full screen, I'm left with 4.9" - WOW a whole .2" bigger than the regular iPhone! The notch serves no real purpose other than to allow added screen size!

The notch is a symbol that goes beyond human understanding... If you understand the symbol you will understand the dark side of the force.

Embrace the Notch!

Use this wallpaper!

Tell the world you can afford a $1,250.00 telephone!

I doubt I’m the only one. Over 60m iPhone 8’s and 8 Pluses have sold in the last two and a half months so the question would have resonated with more than one person at some point.
And over 40 million iPhone X sold. A lot of people like the 8. A lot of people like the X—it’s the best selling of the 3 new models.

Those who don’t like it, for whatever reason—they want a bigger phone, a smaller phone, TouchID, a less expensive phone, they hate the notch, etc.—won’t buy it.

Apple tries to make products that will appeal to as many people as possible, because they’re in the business of selling phones. But they know they can’t make everyone happy, and they’re ok with that.

To add to that the iPhone 7 is supposedly selling extremely well again too. There is no longer ‘the iPhone’ but rather a growing collection currently on sale. I’m fine with that too.

The notch is amazing and unique. I like it and hope the rumored iPad has it also.

Agreed. Two reasons:

1. Apple using the dead space to the right/left of the camera array for the time/network information so it doesn't eat into the space below.

2. It looks unique, sets iPhone X apart, lets those around you know you don't have an Android.

Who watches media on an iPhone?

That's why we have iPads and 65" 4K TV's.

While I don’t agree with the original comment this is an extremely ignorant thing to say.

Why have a top of the line display of media’s not consumed on it? Why a super powerful chip when games ain’t gonna be played because the iPad exists?

Plenty of people consume media on their smartphones. It’s one of its primary purposes.

To notch or not to notch... That's the question...
I love my iPhone X, but I don't see the notch as a beautiful design element... The truth is that most time I don't notice it... During video media consumption I notice it and I would prefer if it wouldn't be there... BUT, this is the compromise for having FaceID... And Face ID is really great. So, when it comes to the question to notch or not to notch the answer ist evident... Long live the notch

Top of the line display is ideal for taking, editing, and viewing photos and reading text in emails and websites.

Super powerful chip is great for multitasking speed, app launch speed, Face ID speed, and camera efficiency.

Holding in your hand small smartphone screen and watching a 2 hour movie is so 2008. That's what the iPad is for. Games? That's for consoles.

Aside from all the complaints, the Notch really is an interesting concept. I know aesthetically it's not the most pleasing to some, but the technology what lies behind the notch is incredible with all the sensors/cameras.

Yes, I do. Would have got the X if that was the case.

Can't stand the notch look.

Just to quote this when Apple remove it next year.

That’s fine. Quote your heart out but this design is here to stay no matter how much you dislike it.

Maybe it will, maybe it won't. Who knows.

Personally I hate it enough that if it stays I will be getting an Android. But I am not an Apple only person to begin with so it's not like it will be a tough move.

That’s fine. People also disliked removal of the headphone jack, usb c, etc and yet somehow the sky didn’t fall.

I guess as an android user your fine with your devices looking exactly like the competition.

But anyway it’s Christmas and we both know the sides we are aligned this and you folks can hash it out. I’ve spoken my last word on the entire subject.

Merry Christmas and learn to enjoy things instead of analyzing them to death.
