SJ in Macworld 2005

10:01am - Steve showing off high-def wedding video. "We're anxiously awaiting Blu-ray so we can burn high definition DVDs"

Man if they were anxious then, SJ must be tearing out what little hair he has left (yeah right, like he seems bothered over the past 3 MacWorlds), now BD format and technology is embedding itself extremely fast!

Oh how easy it is to forget Steve...

Alright, seriously, quit your freakin' whining. You can just buy a 3rd party blu-ray drive like I have. Apple is making a smart move not picking a side this early on. The Warner/Blu-Ray cross just happened, so it's not like they could just go "HEY GUYS LETS GO MACWORLD HURRY HURRY HURRY."

Oops, didn't realise Toast only does data

--edit--

Wait, $1700 x2? Where the hell are you getting your burner? My single BR cost me $600, and it was one of the pricier options.

they already picked a side..they've been blue-ray supporters for years now

I Don't Think Leopard's DVD Player Will Support Blu-ray Nor HD-DVD

I have invested heavily in Apple hardware and software and I really feel let down by not having the blu ray burner as an option for the new pros.

I am all set to replace TWO G5s that have served thier time and are just too slow to crunch HD to DVD.

I am behind my competition who usues Adobe products and a God D_M PC!!!!

I actually really hate working on any kind of lap top so the "AIR" is just a pretty piece of metal to me... I do love wifi on my iphone though:)
( YES laptops have thier place but not for me )

SO, I just had to vent and wanted to see how many video pros are in my shoes. Stuck with Mac and FCP with no REAL HD delivery to the end user.
Toast will only do DATA. I tried HD DVD burns but it was not ready for prime time as the mac burned disks would not play on all HDDVD players.

I have actually considered switching to PC and Adobe just on principle.

WHY no BR burner option? Are we being force fed Apple TV? Are we supposed to take our 1080 footage and compress it so we can hand a customer a 720P apple TV?

I know premier will let me burn br but I really don't want to spend $1700 x 2 and learn new softare. Come on aapl !!!!
I agree.

At Fry's yesterday I scanned the available drives. No HD-DVD burners. LG makes a Blue-ray 6x burner-reader + HD-DVD Reader + Old DVD±RW burner-reader for $399.
So... what's stopping you from buying a BD burner from NewEgg and putting it in the #2 optical bay?
Not knowing if Apple's DVD Player supports Blu-ray & HD-DVD movie playback.

Supporters, yes, but they can't outright stick a drive in a system if they don't know if it's going to be THE drive.

*cough betamax cough*

Interesting you lampoon Betamax. It too was an earlier and superior technology to VHS, just as BD preceded and is arguably superior to HD-DVD.

Let's hope we have learned the correct lesson from Beta vs. VHS, price and licensing are not the basis to decide upon for a standard ( please don't go to the X-rated movie arguement, it is just lame ).

B... b... but PORN!

--edit--

Though I'm pretty sure there's a decent library of porn on either, in any event. Excuse me while I go do some... uh... reconnaisance.

I lol'd!

This is my point as well. 2005!! I think at the very least they could have written the software for us early adopters to author the disks even if we did so with third party drives. That would have been a good hedge.

I just spent two days with 103+ fever and puking so a ruptured blood vessel might be a relief :)

Alright, You can just buy a 3rd party blu-ray drive like I have.

What burner brand and model did you insall, what brand media are you burning on and what software are you burning with? I installed an LG GGW-H20L and the Mac recognizes the drive and I can burn regular DVD's but no BR. I have tried Verbatim BD-RE and Panasonic BD-R discs. They both lock Toast. Thanks in advance!

Not likely.

What I'm waiting for is...

the ability for Apple TV to accept and play a Blu-Ray movie wirelessly. This would be similar to the Airport Express iTunes functionality, which I love.

Phew... great concept, but not likely. That is, unless the next 802.11 standard comes out with a phenominal bandwidth rate with decent distance ranges.

I agree - we'll probably have movies playing in our heads before this is possible - I better get started on that new wireless standard. :)

Apple Dragging it's feet about Blue Ray

Some times apple lags behind on some stuff for whatever reasons and or excuses. But that does not change the fact that they are behind.
Remember Dual layer DVD drives. they were not supported, you could not get them to work from within DVDSP until a year or so later. and when they started to put them in, the layer break point was troublesome.

Apple new since the beginning that Blue Ray was going to win. Now days, we the people are way more actively involved on technology and much more Knowledgeable about it then when the Beta vs VHS war. back then people just wanted something that could do the job for a few bucks. Now we want Quality. the best quality if we can afford it. Do we Not?
I have contacts in china and you would not believe how much an OME Blue Ray Drive cost. $50 to $90. with a minimum order of 500,000 units Buy 1 Mil and get them for $40-$70. I bet Apple will charge anywhere from $300 - $500 for the optional BR Drive. what a RIP off.

Apple will eventually implement BR Drives. proof of that is the 2 extra SATA Ports left inside every Mac Pro tower.

Actually the ODD SATA ports are there because the board was designed by intel and the chipset provides 6 SATA ports.

Jobs doesn't speak too highly of the Blu Ray platform at least from a content perspective, so I doubt he's in a rush to incorporate it into the Mac line... it would be more for the storage aspect I'm thinking...

Nonetheless, I'd expect to see something BR-related by WWDC in some way or another...

Actually Apple Told Intel to Make it that way. Apple does not pick from the bunch they Request and they get. Just like they told intel to shrink the Processor for the MacBook Air.
Got it?

I'm afraid you're quite wrong here. One of the reasons that Apple went to Intel is to be able to use off the shelf products and so boost their profitability. The Dell Xeon boards are almost identical to the Mac pros, in content, if not layout. The story about the Apple requested shrunk processor is just marketing. They are a planned Intel product, just made available to Apple first. Part of the pay-off for switching to Intel, no doubt.

Now use common sense, microsoft = xbox = ****** expensive HD DvD player.
Naturally apple chose blu ray, disney likes blu ray, and apple is on the blu ray board. = MAC PRO WITH BD W00T!!!

The Mac Pro board is based loosely on the intel 5000VSX reference srever board, which has six SATA ports as Supported by the 5000X and 5400B chipsets

That processor package was already designed for the 45nm Penryn's. Apple simply requested it to be used on a 65nm die for the MBA.

GOT THAT!!!

"ALMOST Identical" does not = Identical SO it is not. with one or more things different by nature is different to the rest, and that makes it unique.

"The story about the Apple requested shrunk processor is just marketing" well then Steve Jobs is a lair. that was a quote taken straight from his keynote.

yeah the key word is "Based". that does not mean that in fact they are the same board.
Got it?
Get a Clue.

You sir are the latest victim of Steve Jobs' Reality Distortion Field. I wish I had stock in Mortin salt for all the grains you need when Steve speaks ( where is my 3.0 GHz G5 ).

Ah, the good old Jobs RDF. Yes, we all know and love that one very well...

Where have you been the last twenty years? Try Googling "reality distortion field". Steve Jobs is a consummate liar. It's his job. That's the reality of the corporate world I'm afraid. As far as the Mac Pro motherboard is concerned, I'm afraid that you are being a bit naive.
