I posted this primarily to see if I was alone in thinking that the FCS suite was seriously lacking without BR authoring capability.

Instead I got some nut that has no idea about my concern telling me to stop whining. Chupa is dead on.

I will now stop replying you mr "pc" because it is obvious you have no idea about what I am saying and just parroting other people. Go bother someone else with a serious issue...

NOW,

Can someone really read and reply coherently regarding a possible guestimated timeline for BR authoring in FCS2 or 3? Really as I mentioned this is NOT NEW TECH!

Apple was on DVD like stink on S&#T when that came out and blew peoples minds back then.

Yes there is a business model involved (risk/reward) but seriously how expensive can it be to add this capability to an existing software platform. I will listen to well formed logical replies about why we can't have this as an option. Until then anyone who has no idea about this subject please refrain from exposing your ignorance.

Thanks to all in advance :D

I hear you loud and clear. Do you have any idea how embarrassing it is when my boss can author Blu-Ray from his 4 year old PC running AMD chips and 2gb RAM and my Brand New Mac Pro can't.

I've had to bite the bullet and buy Encore. I bought the student version cause I'll go back to DVD SP when it supports blu-ray. Adobe can stick there software license!

Having said that. I think I read somewhere that DVD SP supports High Definition DVD's and the HD DVD option means that, not HD-DVD. So it can output both? Or no?

Waiting patiently

I have decided to wait to buy my 2 new towers until DVDSP can do blu-ray.

I have read that it should soon and the 8800 vid card is taking some time to ship so I will wait and not spend money on the Adobe authoring software.....unless we are left in the cold for good as some have said, in which case I may bail on the mac systems and software :(

I really hope this is not the case.... as a side note I have read that the adobe BR authoring is not reliable.... not sure if this is the case or not... can someone say for sure that they can author BR disks from an FCP project?

I did burn all the flavors of HD DVD "allegedly" allowed by DVDSP and shelved them as I didn't get around to buying an HD DVD player :)

There were big banner ads on the apple site when one of the newer versions of FCP came out yelling the HD DVD burining capability with DVDSP. People have done it and they write about it on the apple forums but the catch is that the apple burned disks only played on certain Toshiba players or a Mac......

some said they could only be played back on a mac... I could play the disks that I burned as HD DVD but really couldnt see the difference in quality since my old G5 vid card is not too hot for reviewing pic quality.

From what I garnered HD DVD (via the mac) was not ready to go so I did not push that as a delivery method.

Now it looks like HDDVD is RIP for sure I am not going go that way now.

Maybe not NAB

Sorry guys, no Apple at NAB this year... maybe we'll get Blu-ray in 2009...

http://tvtechnology.com/pages/s.0157/t.11096.html

It may not be NAB but my apple tinted eyes MAKE me WANT to believe that it will happen soon. Part of my holding out is that I'm a little freaked out by all the bad news the press is pushing.

Count how many times you hear the word recession on the news and other media outlets. They are scaring people into submission. I am just going to suffer with my old gear for a while until I know I can create a new revenue stream via offering blu-ray. Right now I will need to shell out my cash or take on debt to upgrade to faster machines.... somewhat of a luxury since I am producing right now, just not as fast as I would like.

I was in the same boat until I added an aftermarket BR-BURNER to my MP. Seeing how much Apple charges for stuff like RAM, I'm happy they didn't include a BR burner. Can you imagine how much they'd charge?

Installation was kind of a pain, though.

Is apple TOAST?

Boy am I glad I didn't buy apple stock in December

I kept my rapidly depreciating cash in the bank. I did just get my new mac pro in though. Maybe add the second unit in a few months. Business is off 50% for me!!!!! YTD !! Our season looks better.

Hearng the people talk that apple may never bring out blu-ray authoring because they want the DL biz to grow was sucky.

WHEN is toast 9 supposed to come out? I will do that instead of the Adobe. The R word is changing my recapitalization plans but I am still moving forward just at a slower pace. Anyone else put off from spending on upgrades etc?

I am probably going to buy a Sony EX when I know I deliver BR disk.

SO one more time as it seems the Roxio site is SLOW and I can't seem to find out, WHEN is the ETA. I like the price point!!!!

I had to buy a Mac Pro today for a project coming up. We are using EX1s (and others) and my partner´s PC with premiere can´t handle the EX1 footage.
It´s as you say very anoying that Premiere can burn BD and FCS not.
Luckily we are finishing in SD for broadcast this time, but it´s annoying not to be able to deliver a HD product to clients. We have even used HDV cams with HDMI out hooked up to Flatscreens, in order to show HD footage.

I hope they sort it out asap

I'm exactly in a same situation. But my director wants to premier tv show in hd, so I guess I'll have to use adobe's 30 days trial of Encore.

Pretty funny that we creative pros, who were once the primary target for Apple, will now suffer for that Apple tries to change the consumer world with downloadable qt-movies and therefore doesn't support BD.

I know. Please post your experience with Encore if you use the trial. Good luck

EX Footage

I just got my Sony EX a few days ago. WOW what a camera. The image is SOOOOOO smooth and crisp at the same time. I love the DOF and how good the glass is on this cam.

Now the archiving factor........ really wondering if I am going to pay with HDDs to archive events. I will need to tell my clients that it will cost much more for them to get thier "raw footage" unless I just burn the raw onto DVDs.

I got my new 2008 MP tower about two weeks ago. SWEEEEET as well :)

I am plannig a long post geared toward events videographers and the EX workflow soon.

ANY WORD ..... rumors....on an update to the FCS that will give us blu-ray?

Can we get an idea about TOAST 9 and it's new ability to author bluray from an FCP project? Did I misunderstand this or is it for real?

There is a new internal pioneer drive for about $500 on macmall that I was planning to buy. Toast is less than $100.

That is a doable combo if it works on video not just DATA.

All the best and I hope everyone gets what they need. It sucks that we have to jump through hoops to get this.

So we have pretty much the same set up. The EX1 is producing great footage. I´ve been playing around with some slo-mo ski footage on my 2 days old MP. Great set up.
The only thing that still takes time is conforming video for printing back out to HDV tape. The HDV codec shows it´s true colours there.
I´m unsure of Toast 9, hope they will burn BD and not just DATA

Encore 30 day free?

I would love to find this too just to see how it works if it does at all. Some say not so good or not at all so I got spooked on the idea.

Toast 9 looks like it does. Can anyone confirm it works on files exported using compressor?

Norway :).... how does print to HDV do with footage shot in 1920x1080p do?

Will is downrez (render) and then print to tape or is it a real time conversion?

Thanks

Mike

Archiving to hdd needs multiple backups (technical & human errors). If you shoot a lot, datatape would be better (dlt/lto).
Otherwise archiving raw video files to BD does not need authoring and you can't accidentally erase bd-r!
Archiving is not the problem, limited distribution of final product is!
I don't believe that it is possible to 3rd party to incorporate hdcp to OsX, so Apple has the ball...

I think it downrez real time,it did from 720 50P.
The problem is conforming to tape in HDV. That still takes forever. Not that much faster than the iMac in my sig.
