But generally, if we talk about technology and a certain device rattles, it is considered a bad sign. (Something must have been broken or is loose) Look at the 6S that feels and sounds rocksolid, it means it has properly been manufactured and will serve you well a long time. That's why some of us are concerned with these rattling buttons.
No, it's not necessarily a bad sign indicating something broken or something like that. Yes, something might be not completely perfect, but it doesn't mean it's actually bad. There are certainly cases where it is more on the side of actually being bad, but then there are just cases where it's simply not perfect.

Can anyone chime in that doesn't have a rattle? Though you probably would not be on this thread if you did.

From my own experience, I know that rattles are usually a bad thing. All my hardware/devices that rattled broke down more quickly that their non-rattling counterparts. (Harddisks, dvd-players etc. etc. etc.) A well-designed and well-manufactured phone should not rattle, that's what I think and that's why we (magazines and other reviewers) generally examine the build quality of products and those products that make no noises, rattles etc. and feel solid and sturdy get more points and are more appreciated. It's all very logical.

I would always prefer a sturdy button rather than a rattling one because I know that it will function better and will not break that easily.

I thought we are talking about more about slight button rattle here, not just generic rattle of something inside, which has more unknowns associated with it.

Totally agree. My son has the iphone 6 that is rock solid with no rattles whatsoever. I prefer the 4 inch iphone though

Guess i've been extremely unlucky with mine, the phone doesn't have to be next to my ear to hear it rattle. It's noticeable by just shaking it slightly in the hand. I know people will be thinking it's "no big deal" and " don't shake your phone then " but i expect a little more when i pay £359 for a phone

I would say that is a big deal. I'm very noise sensitive. If I could hear it with normal usage it would have to go back.

We are indeed talking about rattling buttons :) , but if it is according to you a slight button rattle, I see it rather as a dusturbing rattle of a (probably) malfunctioning button because it will affect my normal use of camera functions and lead to those annoying noises in videos that I do not want to have. If I had a choice between the non-rattling lock button in the 6/6S or the rattling one in the 5S/SE, I would certainly choose the former.

Lets see what tomorrow brings, i'm not optimistic though

Yes, the power button on my SE rattles if and only if I shake it. Do I care? NO!

A

Wish it didn't bother me Alec, but unfortunately it does. I've always been fussy about my phones though

This thread kind of reminds me of similar ones previously about the 6s home button 'click' noise being an emergency for some
One of my favorites:

Back on topic, this is a tough issue. If it does affect a large number of people, maybe there will be a quality program a la the iPhone 5 battery and sleep wake, or the 6 plus iSight camera program.

I can hear mine rattle if I shake it and put the phone by my ear. My opinion: Don't care. Unless it starts to sound like I've got tictacs in my pocket walking around, it's of no concern to me.

My SE rattles. My 5S rattled too after a few months. It is annoying, but just hold the buttons if yr shaking yr phone for some strange reason.

Just unboxed my iPhone SE and it rattles more than my 5S does. My 5S didn't rattle when it was new but developed a rattle after a few months. It bothers me enough that I'm taking it back to the store tomorrow. Do I have to take the whole box and accessories or can I just bring the iPhone itself with me?

You need to bring it all. Typically within 14 days they want to do an exchange and not a replacement

I agree, a choice between something that is perfect and something that is not perfect (which by no means means bad or even average or even good, but could be great or even excellent, just not perfect) would generally result in perfect being selected, but the reality is that most things aren't perfect, although many of those things that aren't perfect are still great nonetheless.

I went to exchange my SE this afternoon because of the rattle, but they didn't have any of the model left in stock. I ended up just returning it for now. It was too loose for me to deal with and there was a small defect with the screen.

Truthfully, I think I'd miss 3D Touch too much and it really is easier to type on my 6S. There's no denying that the SE felt WAY more comfortable to hold though.

Mine rattles also, even in the leather case. Returning tomorrow but for the very yellow screen. I think the rattle is here to stay unfortunately.

Yeah. I must say, the build quality feels way more solid on my 6S. I really had hoped that the rattly buttons would be rectified on the SE.

My 5S has it, yet my iPad mini 4 does not. The button doesn't rattle when the Apple leather case is on, as someone already mentioned.

Mine does. Black leather case just purchased today, might not rattle once the leather breaks in some though.

First thing I noticed after I unboxed the SE was that the volume buttons have a little play. Doesn't really bother me but definitely weird.
