Hi, apologies if this seems like a dumb question but I've got little experience with this.

Is it possible to use an nvidia eGPU like the GTX 1080, install CUDA packages and run Deep Learning experiments on the new Macbook Pros? My impression from reading these threads are that the web drivers (which are not out yet) are used for OSX acceleration, but the CUDA packages can potentially support deep learning frameworks like Theano and Tensorflow through Terminal.

Can anyone enlighten me on this issue?

thanks!

I guess, the answer for your question is to first check if there's any success running any eGPU on the new MBP. I think Windows will be fine, it's OSX that'll give the issue.

If only Apple would officially support eGPU solutions

They're releasing a whole generation of underpowered machines with USB-C... I think it's pretty likely they have their own eGPU in the making.

So they likely will block others... and release in 2019.

But by releasing their own eGPU, they would eat into the high end macbook pro market. I would buy a macbook air and attach the eGPU and have more graphics power than the top macbook pro.

However, I could see them releasing it for the top macbook pro only. Get more money out of the people who can afford to buy a high end pro!

Anyone know if the 2016 15" macbook pro works with the razer core in bootcamp WITHOUT an external monitor?

I have been looking at a eGPU solutions for Macs and came arcross this company.

https://bizon-tech.com/us/bizonbox3_features

Kinda looks promising with out of box compatibility supposedly. Maybe worth a look.

Tried the bizon box 2 and had bad luck with it. Their definition of "support" is fuzzy. At the top of the FAQ page it says it works with any Mac with a TB2 port. Later on I found scrolling to the bottom that with my 13" MBP 2015 it has some flakiness and doesn't work under Windows. So I'd say try at your own risk. 15% restock fee.

Excellent question, I would like to know too! :)

Would want to know this too... +1

I know at least two people have reported success with the Razer Core powering the internal display on 2016 MBP in Windows 10. - https://egpu.io/forums/mac-setup/internal-display-works-on-amd-2016-macbooks/

I've personally been able to use the AKiTiO Node with a 2016 13" non-touchbar MBP without external display. - http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/16739069

Okay, so 13" macbook pro (TB or nTB) works with razer core through internal display in both OSX and WINDOWS, can we confirm that?

And 15" works with razer core throught internal display in WINDOWS although you need to take some steps to get it working and reboot before using it.

What about 15" in OSX, works via internal display or only external?

Ok update, I just got my Macbook Pro 15 (455 Radeon 2.7 GHZ, 512GB SSD) it's downstairs, I couldn't believe I got it for $1800 cash, I was even somewhat skeptical that it would happen yesterday. Well the hard part is done, got that. Now I'm set to pickup the Razer Core for $350 on Friday.

It's shocking what you can find on Craiglist if you have cash... Anyways I'll try to install bootcamp on the system within the next 2-3 days. I have to locate or extract my Windows 10 off of my current system because I really don't wanna buy Windows 10...

The only dedicated card I have lying around is a 780 GTX, sadly it's not a 1080 but it will have to do for now. I'll keep everyone posted and share images/pictures when it all goes down. I'm kinda excited :)

Along with you, please let me know if a 15" 2016 MBP works with Razer Core and 1080 GPU in windows through what exact process? I heard the errors are difficult to fix :( anyone get it to work in bootcamp??

Downloading windows right now on my new machine. I don't own a 1080 yet sadly but I'll run the test on a 780 GTX maybe in a month's time I might buy a 1080 but my sending has been kinda high right now even with the discounts at getting both the core and new MacBook Pro.

Keep us posted. I've used my sonnet express with the 2012 and Mac mini with no issues, tried the 2016 and it involved so much mucking around. You can get it working, involves quite a bit is system file modifying .
Given macs are pushing TB so much , it's frustrating how they just do not work with egpu out of the box. You are going to have to disable the AMD and boot off the integrated graphics to get the egpu to work

I plugged in my sonnet express into my skull canyon, and works first time....

I'm actually quite excited about the eGPU progress lately. It was possible with TB1/2 speeds, but with TB3 we're getting into the territory where it doesn't have too much overhead and is actually a very feasible solution. That coupled with 10.12.1 (I think it was) adding better eGPU support in OS X shows Apple might be coming around on this. People have got it running with some minor trickery, but I have a feeling this will mature in the coming months. Sweet, I have been waiting to get a MBP + desktop docking station with eGPU since they first announced TB1 :)

TB4 we will finally get there. TB3 is about PCIe 1.0 16x slot, and modern GPUs saturate that. With TB3, as GTX 1080 is already not hitting its potential.

In saying that, a GTX 1070 over TB2 was a huge huge improvement over the dedicated graphics in my macbook pro. eGPU is a great way to get excellent performance coupled with a laptop or small PC, its just cannot match the desktop boys for a while....

I remember someone testing this over TB1, and still got about 85-90% of the performance out of a desktop card. I don't have any number for TB2/3, but they should start getting very close to desktop performance now (considering the speed has quadrupled now, but games are also more demanding since this was maybe 3 years ago or something). Sending textures and such to the card is probably noticeably slower, but since the cards nowdays have a ton of memory there isn't a huge need for transfer speeds. Anyway, it's still a docking station that will give near-desktop performance for a small laptop, which is totally awesome :)

I used a GTX 1070 on a mac mini and was getting excellent results. its Turned a 2012 mac mini server into a Machine that beat all other macs on GPU performance.

My advice, TB1, TB2 or TB3 , they all offer such a jump over standard, don't worry with TB the machine has. My was very impressed with a mac mini over TB1, the jump from TB2 to TB3 will be slight, and unless your are a gamer wanting every single FPS, you will not worry, and said gamer would not be using a eGPU until there is no bottleneck , which will be TB4 or TB5..... especially with the grunt modern GPUs are producing to push 4K
