Reaction? Looks fantastic and has some great features but overpriced by $200. The latest gen base air should always be under $1k.

Prices are a joke.

If people have $999 in disposable income, then they can easily save another $200. Most people can do that in pretty short order by simply adjusting their spending habits for a month or two.

Consumer yes
Luxury, sometimes (not all their products)
Disposable no

Happy to disagree

Cheers

Agreed, a computer is definitely not a disposable good. Just because many people _want_ to replace it after a year or two doesn't mean they _have_ to replace it.

Users: Apple you've really got to give us better web cams on your Macs to make things like video conference calls better.
Apple: We've got great news for you! Now you can spend $1000 more to buy an iPhone, and then another $100 for an overpriced magnet to improve your video conference calls.
Users: 🤦‍♂️
Well, it’s really more like “you can use the phone you’ve already got as a better webcam than you can get in the store”, but is there really a problem with buying a better webcam and hooking it up via USB? If you need a better webcam, you’ve had options (for fairly cheap, too, like <$50 on Amazon).

Here, the M1 MBA‘s price was increased by roughly 100 Euros along with the announcement of the M2 MBA. Not impressed with that, tbh.

As for the M2 MBA - looks cool, I like the design. I’m a little disappointed about the color selection. I was really hoping for the iMac-like colors and personally, I would have loved the white bezels and keyboard. But I’m happy for the people hoping for more “professional“ looking machines - this is going to be one hell of a portable machine.

I’m not so happy about the price - it’s the equivalent of 1600 Euros here and that’s still with 8GB RAM - which, while likely enough for the majority of users, is starting to seem a bit strange in 2022 and especially at that price.
I’m not sure to what extent VAT factors into the list price, but, if VAT has gone up, wouldn’t that mean that the list price has increased? I’m just spitballing reasons why the MBA might be so expensive in Europe.

I'm surprised the new M2 chip only supports Thunderbolt 3 (not 4) and the machines can still only support a single external display.
The number of displays appears to be a differentiation feature for the M1 Pro, the M1 Max, and the M1 Ultra, for what it’s worth. And it’s probably fair to assume that most consumers need, at most, one external display (if they even use external displays, I’d imagine most MacBook Air users don’t).

I can understand if $200 increased give us 16gb base model. But it’s not the case. I might prefer to get refurbished 14” MBP.

As is typical of Apple, it's no surprise that they've crafted the price points to get the exact (correct) reaction you're having here.

If I were in the market, I'd absolutely be going refurb or gently preowned on a 14", especially with the vastly better screen tech.

I think it looks gorgeous, looks stunning, and I’m sure it is super powerful. Not sure if it will get hotter than the previous MBA (which was pretty cool), because the M2 is bigger than the M1, and according to some graphs, it can draw more power than the M1. And it is thinner. So we’ll have to see how hot it can get.

Overall it seems an awesome device, midnight and starlight color is a very welcome addition, however, the price in Europe is hard to swallow. And that might be the reason I’ll wait for the next Mac mini. Honestly, I don’t need a lot of portability if I have a monitor available on the two places I go frequently, but a MacBook Air is always more confortable if I had to travel (which I don’t plan for now). So a mac mini could work for me, especially at a lower price point, but a laptop has always its advantages (I currently use an iPad Pro as a portable device)

Was hoping this would finally officially support two monitors. I love the new black color, but I think it's time to upgrade my M1 Air to the new 14" MacBook Pro. It's still small enough to be portable, but packs a lot bigger punch.

Also Thunderbolt 3 is lame.

I like it. While it would be nice to get support for a second external display, the redesign with the improved display and webcam position narrow the gap with the MacBook Pro (so much so that Apple doesn’t even charge a premium for the updated 13” Pro when you consider the price of the 10-GPU model). I would like it if Apple made a <2.5 lb Mac again, but it seems the market has spoken and prefers the larger screen, and 2.7 lbs is a pretty good weight for that.

I’m not surprised with the price increase. Remember the 2018 Air was $1099 on its release date.

Ever since the MacBook was dropped from the line up there has felt like a gap in the mac laptop family, I’m guessing this new MBA is an effort to shore up that gap, although the 13MBP is also doing this and given the price difference between the new MBA and 13” MBP you could wonder why they didn’t drop the 13 MBP and offer a beefier MBA or even bring back the 13” MacBook…

So I am having a bit of a dilemma and would appreciate the help. I just purchased a MBA M1 last week and they just announced the new one today of course. I am within the 14 day return policy and seriously considering returning it and waiting for the new one next month. Realistically, when do you think I'll get my hands on a new one? I don't want to be waiting for more than a couple months. I only have one other work laptop and it's not a Mac Book.

I am guessing there is a chance you could get one by the end of July.

I would return it and wait a month or two for the new MacBook Air to be delivered. However, you can check the delivery times and make the maths. I guess if you wait, delivery times will get bigger, so if you’re interested, just buy it now and return the MBA. If you aren’t bothered by the price difference, of course.

I definitely think its worth the wait for a couple months...I can survive until then. When will pre-orders start on the new MBA? There is no option yet on the Apple Store. Just about it coming next month.

Unexpected

Video featured jet black MBA. 😎
Muted, limited color palette.
Labelling the “marginally” improved chip, M2.

Welcome

MagSafe.
Keeping the original M1 MBA around.
Pretty reasonable pricing.
Disappointments

Loss of wedge.

Two USB-C ports on the same side.
No colorful options.
No SD card slot.
Notch.

Overall

Might have been tempted by new MBA if it had come with the cheerful, bright colors. But the loss of the wedge still might have held me back.
So, do I go for the now “old” M1 MBA? Even without MagSafe?
As to pricing, I see Cook's usual strategic tomfoolery — with a mere $100 increment to get the next model — i.e., the MBP.
Crafty fellow — many will go low for the M1 MBA or will jump over the new MBA and go right to the M2 MBP. That means the M2 MBA may well go the way of the iPhone Mini!
What are your highlights? Your reactions?
Man I too miss the wedge design badly, it would have been better if they had given this design to MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air, having then new design but with the wedge shape

We can hope that this leaves space for a smaller model... even an M1 in in a MB 12 body, with just a single USB-C port would be incredible. All the photographers on here could claim it is a pointless, overpriced, "non-pro" device, but those who actually use it would love it.

Not buying this. It looks fat, notch looks like a pain I could do without (I don't use the top of my phone, I DO use the top of my MacBook screen), M1 is still enough, and it's too expensive for a mixed bag upgrade. *Maybe* I'll move to this for 24GB or an M3/later variant when it's refreshed, simply because I'll have little choice.
