Alaskans are sales tax exempt. As long as I pay for it IN seattle. I just show my ID at checkout. So ordering online doesn't work. But how do I get a 16gig to seattle without ordering it first? It's an odd issue.

I had never heard of this before so I thought I would look it up.

http://dor.wa.gov/Content/FindTaxesAndRates/RetailSalesTax/Nonresidents/default.aspx

It says they have the OPTION of allowing sales tax exemption but it looks like there is paperwork involved. I seriously doubt you'll get the best buy to do it for you I. Addition to TWO other discounts.

I mean do any retailers really allow that? Bizarre!

Sort of on subject. So who can help me figure out how to get all my discounts?

I'm a student. So that part is easy (maybe not so much at best buy).

I am also from Alaska, which means I'm not required to pay sales tax in Seattle (where i currently live).

So here is the issue, I want the base model RMBP with 16gigs of ram. If I order it online from Apple, I have to pay 200 dollars in sales tax (can't show my Alaska ID). If I buy from best buy or an apple store, I can only get the base model w/ 8 gigs of ram.

Do you think I could talk best buy into ordering a 16gig base model, then waive the sales tax, then get the student discount, and then ask for the 150 dollar gift card? Does best buy even do custom orders? Will an apple store even do one? How do I get a 16gig model shipped to Seattle without paying for it first!!!?

Any ideas? Appreciate any help.

Best Buy will likely not carry a 16GB model...ever. It might in 3-4 months when demand goes down and they carry the ultra model, but even then the odds are slim. Best Buy usually carries the 2 most popular configs of MacBooks, regardless of which ones. I would suggest ordering online from Apple if you specifically want 16GB RAM but you don't want the 2.6 GHZ processor.

You gotta ask yourself, are you really gonna use 16gb of ram though?

For those of you who didn't get the $200 off, I heard on the phone that BB has a 30-day price match guarantee - so try going to another BB and getting them to match the Apple educational discount!

Also, here's a better copy of my receipt :)

The Best Buy in Paramus on Route 17 (Fashion Center) has a 512gb Model in stock but wont honor the Education Pricing and Gift card.

Only $50 off the computer and $150 gift card.

Best deal

Ha, Worst Buy just got worked. I called to ask about rmbp 2 days ago, they said they were getting 3 only in the next day or 2 and 1 was still available, and offered me to prepay over phone. I brought up discount, they agreed to $200 off and $150 BB GC. So I get an email that night saying order is ready for pickup, yay! I go in the next day, and turns out they still have not received them yet. Also, the moron who I talked to marked my order as picked up (before checking to see they didnt get them), so she took 30 minutes working out a reorder. I complain to manager and ask for them to at least give me my $150 GC now.

***

Go back today, to get my rmbp. used the $150 gc I got the day before to pay for part of it, and when they ring it up they give me ANOTHER $150 gc! And on top of that, when the moron the day before did the reorder she marked the final price as $1,999 including tax.

So my final price, including tax was:
$1,849 + $150 GC, not bad BB@!

I'm going in today with my 2 receipts for my Retina MBP's and gonna see if a different location will honor it differently...someone mentioned a 30 day price match guarantee so I should definitely be able to use that in my argument.

Ah, you got lucky! It could have turned into a bad situation too.

No dice at East Colonial, Orlando or Daytona Beach Best Buys. The managers at both stores said they received an update to the "standard operating protocols" and said the new education discount is either a $150 BB gift card OR a $100 iTunes gift card. Both were seemed slightly annoyed I even tried. Oh well.

Tried my local Best Buy today. They said they could do $150 off the laptop and the $150 gift card. The manager there said it had something to do with the fact that they aren't supposed to be going above and beyond Apple on promos (which has to be BS since they have been selling all of their Apple computers at a discount for 6 months or so....but that is neither here or there).

Anywho....made my case and showed copies of the receipt from this thread, but no dice on the full $200 off/$150 GC.

My BB gave me the standard $100 off but I told them it's $200, they looked online to verify gave me that and the $150 GC. Guess I lucked out.

Considering everyone elses stories 150 and 150 sounds goooood

I am batting a thousand at BB with discount + gift card to match the back to school deal. Fingers crossed on this one. They usually have no clue what is going on but after 30 mins of fumbling around they tend to figure it out.

Pretty much describes my experience there today too. First response from them was that they could only do either/or in terms of the student discount and the GC. Then after some looking around it changed.

And this was the manager (or one of them probably) that I was dealing with.

Had a really awful experience at Best Buy.

I reserved my base RMBP two days ago, and they emailed me yesterday that one had come in and was being held for me, so I got it today.

The lady at the Customer Service Pickup Item thing couldn't locate it, and she had someone find it in the back storage area. That was fine, but the SKU wouldn't scan in the system so a manager came over and did it. After that was taken care of, I showed the manager my student ID for the education discount, and told me that they only do $100 discounts. I pointed out many other Best Buys have been matching Apple's discount of $1999 before tax.

I even showed him the picture of the receipt in the original post of this thread, and he said he can tell that the manager at that store did a "manual override" of the price, and he refused to do it.
I asked for a supervisor or anyone higher up than him, and he said he was the only one.
After getting furious and some choice words were said between us, he decided he would give me a $150 student discount instead of the $100, but I could no longer have the $150 Best Buy gift card.

So, unfortunately, I gave in as I remembered the latest I heard was the Apple Store weren't getting them in until late July.

Going to send a letter to corporate and see what happens.

Sorry I really don't understand all the people bitching about best buy in this thread.

1) they not only have retina macbook pros in stock which they are selling to normal customers instead of saving for businesses (which most apple stores don't seem to right now)

2) many are agreeing to HOLD or let you pre-order the rMBP - again, something mac stores aren't doing.

3) then they're giving everyone in this thread either $100-200 off for a student discount or a best buy giftcard which one could argue is more useful than an app store gift card.

Then you all bitch that they aren't giving you both discounts.

Just because one manager did it doesn't mean the others are obligated to, where is the written policy that they should? If there was a written policy they weren't adhering to I would agree that its wrong, but there's no written policy - just because a few people got lucky doesn't mean every manager is going to do the same thing or even should. In fact, what probably IS written policy is that they do not combine discounts/specials. So I'm guessing the managers that did do it might end up with their asses handed to them.

Stop the entitled, baseless bitching and be glad you got your computer.

I really didn't care at all about the Best Buy gift card. I was pissed off because a particular manager refused to do anything about the student discount, even though they are supposed to be matching Apple's. He almost lost a sale because of his smug attitude.

Again, where is the written policy that they are supposed to be matching Apple's student discount?

And like he cares if he lost your sale - 12 other people called about that computer while you were arguing with him.

Customer service is all well and good but there is a difference between helping customers, accommodating customers and kowtowing to a bunch of demanding entitled people who saw something on the internet.

The woman that I reserved the computer with said they were matching it. It was that store's policy.

Key word....almost. Since he was successful with you the next customer will face the same thing.

$200 is a lot of money to some of us. And if there's a chance that we're supposed to get that student discount and some uninformed managers won't give it, then it's worthwhile to fight for it and be a little irritated that we feel shortchanged. End of story.

Someone will have to double check me on this, but I'm pretty sure that matching the student discount is part of the authorized reseller agreement.

$200 is a lot of money to most people, myself included - which is why I won't go to best buy at all. I don't think they will give me both discounts and I refuse to pay extra - I'll just wait.

"if there's a chance" is the key phrase. Its fine to try to fight for it. But stop being all butt hurt and offended and bitching about best buy customer service when they say no. Why do you assume the managers who WON'T give the discount are misinformed? Maybe its the ones who are giving the $200 discount that are misinformed.

Just trying to throw some perspective out there, everyone is assuming that the managers who aren't giving everything are wrong, thats not necessarily the case. Frankly, I'm very happy for those who got great deals but I think they are the exception who had an easy going naive manager. Which makes it pretty silly for everyone else in this thread to run around demanding it and threatening to "write cooperate."
