so trey m,

RETURN
it was 2049.99 because the 150 discount was from $150 gift card deducted from price since they couldnt refund a promotional gift card so they subtracted that from the full price (i dont know why the numbers seem strange)

SALE ITEMS
they rang me up for 1849.99 (subtracted the $200 discount and $150 gift card so -$350 from total) and then paid me a difference in cash of about $230.

hope that answers your question

This is exactly what happened to me, except the opposite way.

All in all though, I got the laptop for 1849.

The lady who knew for sure we should get both discounts was the apple manager who had an apple shirt rather than just a best buy manager... this may be your guys keys to getting both discounts.

much thanks!

They ended up honoring the $200 discount and $150 gift card! They had to return my initial purchase (with just the $200 discount but not the gift card), and just had to repurchase the items over again. There was really no problem at all. Just make sure you give them the SKU and it should be okay!

Glad to hear! Was this at the same Best Buy you initially purchased the laptop at?

Only because I can't let this go...

I called my local Best Buy to get clarification on the $150 gift cards.

1) This only applies to the brand new MBPs and for students only.
2) You only get the gift card, no education pricing
3) You get education pricing on older models, but no gift card

And the girl I spoke with said "$100 off" and not Education Pricing when I asked about it - she didn't seem to know the Retina MBP is $200 off.

I just bought mine at the Danvers, MA store. Here's my experience:

The computer system said the education discount was $100, no gift card. Thankfully, I printed out the receipts you guys have been posting and the employee called the manager. The manager checked out the receipts, seemed skeptical, but since the SKU's were visible he did a manual override to give me $200 off and a $150GC :)

TL:DR; Bring the receipts for proof!

I went to plasticjungle.com and exchanged my $150 BB GC for a $138 Amazon gift card since Office Mac 2011 is much cheaper there.

Good luck!

Glad it helped, post up your reciepts! The more locations visible the better chance that someone can get a reciept for a store closer to theirs.

I struck out at two stores in Cincinnati, Ohio. One store flat out said they couldn't do it as they aren't an educator authorized store and therefore they can't lower the price at all. They said they could do the gift card but that was all.

The other store I thought I had the deal in. However they would only do the deal if I also bought their Geeksquad protection. Well, let's see, $183 for applecare of $350 for Geeksquad. I explained it basically made trying to get the deal useless. As I was walking out they thought about it and then offered me the Geeksquad for $250. I told them I wasn't spending a penny over $1483+tax total (including the $100 itunes gift card.)

I'm going to Tennessee tomorrow so I'll try a few stores in Kentucky and Tennessee and post my luck there.

Do not ever let them bully you into buying extra crap/services that you don't want/need. Wow, BB is looking worse and worse.

Get It From Apple

Best Buy doesn't have any real system in place to handle student discounts.

When I worked my last back to school sale, our floor manager specifically told us to check for student ID and that he would manually over ride the price to match Apple. The reason being was that we had the area mall next across the street and it would take the customer literally 10 minutes to drive there and be talking to an Apple employee.

It wasn't advertised in any official Best Buy literature or passed down from corporate. It was our way of keeping the customer shopping within Best Buy with the hopes of attaching accessories/services/protection plans and all of that.

I would be willing to bet that's similiar to how this all started and why its such a crap shoot when talking to anyone at Best Buy about this. Talking to the Store Manager is probably the stupidest thing to do though. I dont see how asking him to manually override an already low margin item such as a laptop by $200 and expecting him to be happy about it no matter if some other tard did it. Especially with a hot ticket item like this, I can imagine my former store manager would more than happy to take the return and boot you out the store knowing that we would no doubt make the sale to someone else and hell maybe attach accessories/services/protection plans with it.

TL;DR This topic should have a huge YMMV at the end because no way in hell will most managers at Best Buy willingly lose $200 on a bare laptop sale

In other words, how much is the extra aggravation worth for $50 more giftcard? Compounding the problem is the lack of availability at apple stores and late shipping from online store

They kept insisting Apple wouldn't replace batteries and that Apple used refurbished parts, etc. I told the guy I didn't care what they used because half of the half dozen apple products I own are refurbished to begin with. And I told him my Macbook I use now which is almost 5 years old has had over $2000 in replacement (bought brand new) but nothing was replaced twice besides the Superdrive (yes, it is possible to burn the laser out from overuse, lol)

Looks like I'll just get mine from Apple. They have the best deal.

If I can't get any in Kentucky or Tennessee to do it I'll just do that as well. At the second Best Buy store the guy wanted to give me an attitude on the education discount and even honoring it for me. I just graduated grad school on June 11, well, I walked in commencement, still unknown if I graduated for sure as I do not have a diploma in hand yet. He questioned me because my college ID is 7 years old (4 years undergrad and 3 years grad) and said it didn't look like me anymore. Well, in 7 years people change quite a bit and my college charges you for new ones so I still have my original day 1 issued one, lol.

Kick him in the junk and then take his driver's license and say he doesn't look like his own pic.

....jjjust kidding. No violence! It's a computer. We'll live. Best Buy is losing a lot of potential customers over this. Once they have a bunch in stock and all the fan boys have bought theres, then maybe BB's tune will change... but it'll be too little too late.

none have arrived in my areas, and some are sold out lol

too many people called bestbuy and everytime i ask for available of the retina display macbook will received a straight "No" answer without checking.......

got my 15" MBP Retina at the Best Buy in Marina, CA.

matched the student price and gave me a $100 BB gift card which I promptly turned into $100 in amazon.com gift cards! decided not to bother and push for the full $150 since my student id is expired :)

Nice, they didn't give you any trouble did they?

nah, just took them a while to figure out how to ring it up. mine was rung up as:
$1,899 for MBP
$100 for the gift card

I thought about just returning the gift card since it isn't a promotional one, but ended up just buying the Amazon Kindle branded gift cards, you can buy anything with them

That's odd that it rung up as $1899. Looks like they took off $300 from the original retail and then charged you $100 for the gift card. Why did they take off $300 and did you mention the SKU on the front page for the $150 gift card.

yea the exactly how they decided to ring up, the logic was apple took $200 off and then gave you the gift card for free. so they decided to take $300 off and charge me $100 for the gift card to "match" the deal

I didn't push for the $150 since the manager and the supervisor came over and made a fuss about it being out of stock online. saved about $14 in tax this way, so I paid an extra $36. Maybe this reciept can help people at stores where the managers say either or.

I didn't both to push since the manager and the supervisor came over and my student id was expired, it has a little sticker over the expiration date. saved about $14 in tax this way, so I paid an extra $36.

Well I'm glad it worked out, do me a favor and remove the picture or black out the last 4 digits displayed of the gift card and black out the issue approval.
