I'm in Dallas. Carriers are advertising their LTE networks here. Perhaps they aren't in other areas and that's why people don't know.

Maybe, my point is apple advertise this stuff to the masses, people don't have a clue what half of new **** in the iPhone even is.

Tangible stuff like faster, bigger, thinner, lighter etc, sure

**** like "44% greater color gamut than 4s, full sRGB specification, Dual band wifi, LTE" etc, you know what this means, I do, some of your friends do, but the average joe public consumer (apples demographic) don't.

Apple only cite tech specs when it suites them, if their hardware is subpar, they throw the old "we dun care bout hardware, only user experience" chestnut at us.

And incase nobody mentioned it, we now have some fragmentation introduced to the iOS ecosystem. Sure it's not alot, thin black borders in iPhone apps, but now there is some fragmentation. Price of product evolution I suppose.

I don't understand what apple could have done more?

- They changed the design, even though it's the same shape, it's a unibody design, where the back is part of the phone, not a separate piece.

- They added LTE

- They gave everyone their dumb 4 inch screen

The only complaint I have is no NFC, and in all actuality, I only wanted that because I'm a huge nerd, anyways. Only 2% of ALL GLOBAL RETAILERS support NFC payments, so besides corny file transfer like Android does by touching their tips (literally), it wouldn't even add any functionality that is REALISTICALLY functional.....

I like chestnuts

We've had some fragmentation in the iOS ecosystem ever since the the iPhone 3G came out. The key is not to let the fragmentation get out of control for developers.

Id like to know just what is considered big in your book or anyone elses.
Tell us all what you expected from a phone in 2012
Please....

Well to bring me back they needed to at least have some good new features.

If they had brought this phone out last year like they should have I would have never sold my new iphone (4s) and jumped ship. Now that i have the GS3, I need some improvement over it to come back, just the jewelry (trendy) aspect of the iphone (its only advantage) is not enough to bring me back.

Maybe when they bring out a 720 p screen I will like it, but by then everyone else will have 1080,....

I will look at it in person and you never know, being the tech junky I am I may get one to go with my ipad 3 and macbook air, and macbook pro. ?? You never know. but as it looks now, there is no improvement over what I have, in fact it seems it would be a downgrade (except for the bling factor)

You're eyes can't discern 720P...let alone 1080 at 4". Now you're just chasing specs for the sake of bragging rights.

Just normal people who don't speak tech (they do exist), closest Kentucky I've been to was KFC at my local mall. Maybe it's high time you escaped silicon valley ?

LTE is pretty new. If people haven't heard of it they are about to know about it once the iPhone is on sale.

:D I love these "should have" remarks. How myopic do you have to be!? :D

I actually believe the rumor that they had the phone ready and didnt bring it out because of LTE, so what I said actually makes sense if you follow that line of reasoning.

And yes last year when the 4s was debuted this would have been a home run. This year, Mehh...

Yes you all are all correct, it has the bling factor, if thats what is important to you then enjoy, you will love it, looking cool in the coffee shop.

Frankly, I was hoping for NFC and wireless charging (but mostly NFC). Camera improvements, for me, are moot, unless low-light has been greatly improved (will have to see). This is the first iPhone, for me, that just didn't do enough to have me jumping to get one. Maybe once I lay with it I will change my mind. Right now the Luia 920 looks mighty inviting, even after what MS/Nokia pulled with the 900...

Agreed.

Agreed on wireless charging. Even my toothbrush charges by induction.

Actually, people can perceive differences in excess of 500 ppi. But the fact that the GS3's 720p screen has a lower pixel density that that of the iPhone 5 would seem to negate his point.

True, true, as I said I was hoping this would be an upgrade. But 20 Pixels vs .8 inches is not an upgrade to me. Just like thinness yes the iphone is thinner, but compared to the size of the whole phone they are about the same. Still no upgrade.

What, with the screen glued to their face?

Which ignores the fact that the 4S was a home run last year, and the iPhone 5 will likely be a home run this year.

Another silly argument for the strawman position. I never say anything about a "bling factor". You seem be the one to bring that up.

I would also like to say this is a great post. Really puts things into prospective when you talk about improvements.

+1

Well, I am still definitely disappointed at the lack of TRULY-innovative or unique features such as haptic feedback or anything like that. The iPhone 5 is just more of the same evolutionary steps taken by the 4 and the 4S.

Am I getting one? Yes, because I am still on a crappy Motorola RAZR. But no, it's not as groundbreaking as the original iPhone...at all.

Agreed.

I've got NFC on my n7 and haven't used it for anything but to try skim my own credit cards and see what sort of information could be pulled from it, otherwise haven't used it at all.

Display Improvements
4" Screen I'm perfectly happy with 3.5"
In-cell touch What?
44% greater color saturation I'm happy with the current screen colour, as are most people.
Full sRGB support Not sure what this is?
Higher brightness Current brightness is fine.
Less glare Glare doesn't affect me and I doubt it affects others.

Performance Improvements
2x CPU iPhone 4 is fast enough
2x GPU Current graphics processor is good enough IMO
Better battery life I doubt it, let's see what happens in real life.

Enclosure Improvements
20% Lighter Who cares?
18% Thinner As above.
Increased durability How exactly?

Wireless Improvements
LTE Good improvement but not worth £529
DC-HSDPA Unsure what this is.
Dual band 802.11n As above.

Camera/Video Improvements
Sapphire Crystal (more durable) Don't understand this.
40% faster capture speed Current camera is fine.
Better low-light performance How much better?
Improved noise-reduction
720p HD Facetime camera Current camera is fine.
Improved video stabilization Hmmm.
Still photos while recording video Pointless feature.
A6 post processing of photos Won't change much.

Audio Improvements
Better Earphones Nothing to do with iPhone 5 itself.
Three microphones What does this improve?
5 magnet speakers Unsure what this improves?
2-way noice cancelling earpiece As above.
Wideband/HD Audio HD audio? How does that work?

Connectivity Improvements
80% smaller dock connector Nothing wrong with the current dock.
Reversible dock connector What does this improve?

*********************************************************

All the above really shows me is that a lot of the new features are very minimal and hardly improve anything of any real significance. The only feature I actually think is a good improvement is the LTE.

The iPhone 5 is obviously the "best iPhone ever". But is it really worth the money for a lot of people? Certainly not for me.

I'm sticking with my iPhone 4 and until something really game changing comes out I'll be very happy with what I've got.
You know, I think I completely get you - but I definitely disagree with you too. What you are saying is that they are all worthless feature because the iPhone 4 is sufficient. I want improvements, however, no matter how small they are.

In 2010 Apple was barely able to put in a 1 megapixel rear-facing camera in a 7.1 mm iPod touch. Now they give us a really high quality 8 megapixel camera in a 7.6 mm thin design. And a 5 megapixel camera, that reportedly beats the iPhone 4 and possibly the iPad 3, in a 6.1 mm design.

If everybody was thinking like you ("it's good enough"), those improvements would never have been made.

I get it: it doesn't feel like a 3GS to 4 upgrade. But let's face it: smartphones are mature today. There are no big things left to add (like copy-paste, multitasking, front facing camera, LED flash, etc.). All the big things have arrived.

"Everything that can be invented – has already been invented," This (in)famous quote has long been attributed to the commissioner of the United States Patent Office, a Mr. Charles Duell, back in 1899

Uh, yeah, we'll see how "2x" translates. "Apple Marketing" language can be very tricky to translate into "real world".

True, but Apple's 1 year old phone already had a 35% advantage over the Galaxy S3 so even if it isn't a two-fold increase its still going to smoke their competitions flagship phone.
(Considering the 4S already does smoke it)
