I like the naming system. Like laptops and desktops, Apple is removing the numbering in the name (and are just writing which generation the product is currently in).

To me, it shows they are trying to push the iPad as a professional device.

Don't be so close minded, the numbers were getting redundant iPad is much better and falls in line with the rest of their lineup, i hope the new iPhone will just be "iPhone"

Oh, really?

Yes. Really.

Why do so many people care about the name? It's a new product. Even if it was named iBrick, there would still be many hoarding the device. The way I see it, Apple strategically named it the way they did to cause more commotion which is a great publicity stunt. Kudos to Apple.

Real original. The New Ipad. Sweet! I am unimpressed with the update. I find buying an ipad 2 for cheap now that everyone is unloading them is a better deal.

At least until the NEWER Ipad comes out. (or will is be The Newest Ipad?)

It's not called the "New iPad." It's called iPad. The new is simply an adjective which means: "Having been made or come into being only a short time ago; recent."

It's just "iPad" and it makes sense to do it this way. I wouldn't be surprised if they start doing it with the iPhone. "iPad/iPhone 8" or "9" doesn't sound cool anymore. It's confusing when they start getting higher in numbers like they will be soon. They have to head it off somewhere, may as well be now.

I'm sure this was debated ad nausea in Apple's marketing department before being signed off by upper management yet I'm supposed to take the opinion of some dude on a forum who took all of a couple of hours to think about it.

Oh, it's name is iPad. New is an adjective to describe it.

It's called the "iPad" because of the iPad 8"

Posted this elsewhere.

When Apple releases the smaller iPad later this year, they REALLY don't want to call it the iPad 3 with 8" screen. And when the smaller iPad is released, they'll stop selling the iPad 2.

Which means their product lineup will be:

iPad 8"
iPad 9.7"

And eventually... iPad 13.3"

No. The Macbook is called 13" MB not 13.3" MB.

Seriously, people who follow Apple are getting dumber and dumber and that includes the sites and journalists who cover them. They've said "the new [product]" all of the time for the non-numbered products. The new iMac, the new MBA, etc.

I read somewhere that they didn't assign a specific name due to the lawsuit with proview.

No offense, but why the hell would you assume this was the iPad 2 if the number 2 was no where on the box?

That's the point of the whole post. I wanted an iPad 2, it was a couple months after launch, Walmart had been sold out and when I asked if they had any, they said one just came in, here it is. The salesman and I both looked at it and had no way of telling what model it was. It wouldn't have made any sense for them to be getting new stock of the old model so I bought it, opened it up, and found it was what I wanted.

Thanks for the lesson on what the word new means. I can now add that to my personal dictionary.

I, for one, prefer Apple's naming conventions to what we see in most other consumer electronics. The alphanumeric soup that most product names are derived from are impossible to keep track.

Plus, the model numbers are on the packaging if you really need to know. If the store staff can't tell which is the new model vs. the old, maybe you should be shopping elsewhere...

iPad 2 is fine. Just as good as the 3. I say pick one up for cheap and wait till apple produces a upgrade thats worth it to you.
