Actually cars are numbered by the year. For example I have a 2006 Honda Accord. Not the best analogy.

Apple laptops would be the better example. People just say I have a macbook or I have a macair, but not which one. Even other makers just call it a "Dell Latitude" or something in general and you normally have to look a little harder to find the model number of latitude it is.

Uh-huh. And what year did the 2006 Accord come out? 2005.

I'm sure this is a duplicate thread, but honestly I have no idea why Apple didn't bother to give the new iPad an actual name either. People are gonna call it the iPad 3 anyways.

Well, the upgrades seem very "4s like"
I'm betting the next ipad, (like the next iphone), will be very different.

How is it "4s like?"

IPhone 4 : A4 CPU, retina display, 3G
iPhone 4S: A5 dual-core CPU (1), retina display, 3G/HSPA (0.5), Siri (1)
Hardware upgrade: 1.5 units
Software upgrade: 1 unit

iPad 2: A5 dual-core CPU, 1024 x 768 display, 3G
iPad 3: A5x dual-core CPU/quad core GPU (0.5), 2048 x 1536 display (1), 4G LTE/HSPA+ (1.5), 5MP camera/optics/sensor (1), voice dictation (1)
Hardware upgrade: 4 units
Software upgrade: 1 unit

I'd guess they decided this is the form the iPad is going to take for the foreseeable future, they feel they've got the design right & no major physical changes from here on in.

exactly like iphone 4 and 4s

They already have all the "molds" made, (so why change things when they can milk them out another year). ;)

The iPhone 4S also got the camera update over the iPhone 4, so using your scoring system, the hardware upgrade on the iPhone is 2.5.

Nice analysis... (though I would quibble that voice dictation is 0.5 since it's not the full Siri :p)

OP, Apple is clearly moving away from the numbers anyway. I think the "S" debate has become moot. It's just going to be iPad, iPad, iPad and iPhone, iPhone, iPhone--just like it's iMac, iMac, iMac now.

You can indicate the release timeframe or other info if you want to talk about a specific version, just like we do now for Macs. E.g., we'll probably be calling the current iPad the 2012 iPad in the future.
(Or if Apple released a ~7" iPad later this year, maybe the 10" 2012 iPad!)

Of course we can continue to debating how significant an update is, which it what the "S" debate is really about. I think pure3d2 pretty much laid that out as well as it can be.

The form factor is NOT going to change dramatically moving forward

Much like the Macbook Air and iMac the iPad form factor is not going to dramatically change from year to year moving forward. It makes much more sense for Apple to just call the device the 'iPad'. There is no need to keep adding numbers and letters to the name every 12 months. That model does not scale from a marketing standpoint.

You forgot the substantially improved graphics chip (up to 7 times faster) (1), improved camera (described as "just might be the best camera ever on a phone") (1) and improved antenna design (0.25)

So that makes it more like Hardware upgrade: 3.75 units

I'm not saying the iPad isn't a huge upgrade (it is), but the 4S was also a substantial upgrade.

iPad "HD"

Glad the didn't go with the "HD.". Seemed kinda tacky and very un-Steve.
Just iPad seems appropriate. Thought he was gonna turn in his grave after that rumor.

I agree 100% and just iPad is good for me. I could not see them tacking on HD. Glad, too!

Ok so Apple doesn't designate versions of iPods, Macs, or the AppleTV. The iPhone and iPad are anomalies in Apple's lineup of names. Wether you bought an iMac in 2007 or yesterday, it's called iMac. Is Apple unoriginal because it doesn't see the need to append the iMac's name with a meaningless number? Guess what? The next iPhone will probably be simply called 'iPhone'.

Honestly though, I do not see the big deal. It's just a name. It's not going to impact how the device works. Seriously, people need to get over this pointless whining.

Stop this.

If it was called the iPad 3 then people would complain it wasn't enough changes to warrant it being called the iPad 3.

So instead Apple wisely named it something that (you would hope) nobody could complain about, just simply call it "iPad" and people will buy it.

But no, that's not good enough apparently, even though all the iPods were always called just "iPod" (though they called them iPod mini and such but never iPod 2, iPod 3, etc).

Apparently Apple is better at marketing than you are, so just give up.

The difference between iPad/iPhone and the iPod/Mac naming is the fact that Apple doesn't sell two versions of its Mac simultaneously (ex. They don't sell the 2010 MacBook Pro alongside the 2011 one). Same thing with the original iPod line-up, they didn't have to number them since they only sold one release at a time.

What's going to happen next year when "the new iPad" is a year old, and "the newest iPad" comes out? It will be confusing...

I agree that a big number on the front of the box would be much cleaner with a simple "iPad".
HOWEVER, the model and number or any other indication should clearly show which iPad is it. Because if you will buy one used iPad on eBay and all you will see is "iPad", I don't think you will be glad.

"NEW IPAD" To name or NOT to NAME...??

Yes, it was a surprise....no, #3.....BUT APPLE knows what they're doing.....and it's probably good to get out of the # game. I hated that 3, 3GS,4, 4S with the IPHONE..........when I get my "NEW" IPAD next week........I WILL CALL IT>>>> IPAD 2012 !!! (period!) (Aaaaand....when I HAVE to buy the NEW one with ALL the COOL upgrades ONE YEAR LATER........I will call it.....IPAD 2013 !! That works for me! You say what??? (I'll be waiting for the beyond COOL....HAPTIC touchscreen!!)

I think that they may have named it the new iPad because it is the first iPad (and device in general) released since the death of Steve Jobs. The iPad was Steve Jobs most prized device (if i'm not mistaken he wanted to create the tablet before the iPhone but due to circumstances at the time he felt that the world wasn't ready for a tablet yet). Also perhaps new because it was the first iPad released under Tim Cook.

They may call the iPhone 6 (quit calling it 5...They called the iPhone 3G the 3G because it introduced 3G. The next iPhone is the 6th generation of iPhones) the new iPhone.

I am sure that people won't call it the new iPad but instead they will call it simply "iPad". I take it that Apple may want to start becoming creative with the names of their devices instead of just naming things iPhone 1,3G,3GS,4,4S,6,6S etc.
