Stop this.

If it was called the iPad 3 then people would complain it wasn't enough changes to warrant it being called the iPad 3.

So instead Apple wisely named it something that (you would hope) nobody could complain about, just simply call it "iPad" and people will buy it.

But no, that's not good enough apparently, even though all the iPods were always called just "iPod" (though they called them iPod mini and such but never iPod 2, iPod 3, etc).

Apparently Apple is better at marketing than you are, so just give up.

anyone who thinks its a bad name obviously just doesn't understand where apple is going with it. Guaranteed iPhone will fair the same in a few months which is good but also a pity we will never sort out the "it will be iPhone 5" or "no it will be the iPhone 6."

I call it Maxipad because it's thicker.

Tom

(in all seriousness most people are going to call it iPad 3)

ipad "2s" would be a more Appropriete Name?

What do you guys think?
The "updates" sure seem to be following the same path as the iphone.

Is this device worthy of a new name, or is the ipad 2s more appropriete?

I think if either one of the retina display or 4G LTE were missing from the new features then I think the 2S would have been a better name but, I think that the new features are enough to warrant a new name.

The whole point of dropping everything except "iPad" was to get away from the stupid "major update" versus "_S update" speculation.

Just look at all the negative reaction that the "iPhone 4S" got simply because people were expecting something called an "iPhone 5".

It's the third generation iPad, or the 2012 iPad. Next year there will be another new iPad, the fourth gen or 2013 model.

People will call this one the iPad 3 and the next one the iPad 4 casually I'm sure. Just like people call the first iPad the "iPad 1" even though Apple refers to it officially as "iPad (first generation)".

Just like the iPods, just like the Mac line.

Yes. Really.

So, the iPad 2 says "iPad 2" on the sticker and the original iPad says "iPad". What did you expect it to say? "iPad 1"?

EDIT:

P.S. You could also have looked up the Model number listed to check which one it was.

Why all the moans? The iPad FWIW appears on my order confirmation as "iPad third generation" I'm fine with that. They could have called it the iPad carrot as far as I care, as long as the features are there.

Your not even making sense. How are you not understanding this? What I posted is a picture of my iPad 2 box, which clearly shows it labeled as "iPad". The customer shouldn't have to google some obscure part number to find out if the box contains the item they want. It should just be there. Maybe apple labeled the 3G ones different. I don't know. What I do know is that my iPad 2 box doesn't say iPad 2 anywhere on it.

"the new iPad" is a stupid name

I think this is the dumbest name that they could have chosen. It is so confusing. Can anyone tell me why they named it this. This image makes it look stupid. What is "the new iPad" going to be called when the next iPad comes out? Will the next iPad be called "the newer iPad"? Of course I bought one but the name is really dumb.

lol

I'm pretty sure this is temporary, at some point I think it'll just be known as the iPad (x generation). Already you can see instances of iPad (3rd Generation) on Apple's site, I think it's just to make the transition easier, also as iPad (First Gen) gets phased out.

Why wasn't the new iPad called iPad 3 or iPad HD?

Or something else for that matter? How are you going to identify this iPad in the future? What do you call it if you want to sell it on Cragslist a year from now? You can't keep calling it the 'new' iPad for ever, because that would be stupid. Any thoughts on why Apple chose this route? Will it just be iPad 3rd generation, 4th gen etc. like the iPod from here on? That would suck big time. A suffix for an iOS device is almost expected ever since the iPhone '3G' came out.

Oh my god, you're right! Quick, tell Apple that they need to start numbering all their iPods, MacBooks and Macs IMMEDIATELY!

I know. I don't know what kind of Honda I drive, they don't number the damned things. And my Miata is an MX5, but an MX6 isn't even the same kind of car. I'd put my head in the oven, but I'm confused about all the numbers.

Actually cars are numbered by the year. For example I have a 2006 Honda Accord. Not the best analogy.

Apple laptops would be the better example. People just say I have a macbook or I have a macair, but not which one. Even other makers just call it a "Dell Latitude" or something in general and you normally have to look a little harder to find the model number of latitude it is.

Umm...the difference between iPad/iPhone and the Mac naming is the fact that Apple doesn't sell two versions of its Mac simultaneously (ex. They don't sell the 2010 MacBook Pro alongside the 2011 one). Same thing with the original iPod line-up, they didn't have to number them since they only sold one release at a time.

What's going to happen next year when "the new iPad" is a year old, and "the newest iPad" comes out? It will be confusing. I doubt Apple wants people to refer to it as "the old iPad".
