So disappointed. Now if I want the best phone Apple has to offer, I have to get a 5.5" iPhone (too big for me but I get others like it). :(

I don't mind Apple making a 5.5" iPhone along with the 4.7", but they should keep them the same spec wise.

If you want the best Retina MBP, you have to buy the 15". Why not for the iPhone?

As a commercial photographer I can tell you guys that the protruding lens will most likely be worth the image quality gained. Optical image stabilization is the lens being able to float ever so slightly to make up for camera shake in lowlight situations. Also, it looks like the lens diameter is physically bigger than the iPhone 5s. This means more light is hitting the camera sensor which is also a great thing. I was super excited for a 5.5 inch display anyway, but now I'm really excited knowing that this awesome lens will be in the phone.

Us Five-Fivers™ will be taunting your blurry, un-optically-stabilized photos.

Hahahaha thank you! Funniest thing I've heard today!! Yes we will!

I'm lucky I am already happy with the image stabilization in my 4S, so the 4.7 inch iPhone 6 will be good enough for me. In fact, I sometimes find myself sometimes using my iPhone in not-so-great light instead of my DSLR (unless I have a lens with image stabilization on my DSLR), as the results are surprisingly good.

The lens will not protrude on the 5.5 inch model, according to the recent Foxconn leak.

But other than that, I don't see the big issue anyway. People use cases. The camera will not protrude beyond the case. If you don't use a case, then a protruding camera is going to be less ugly than those scratches on the back of your phone in any case.

I really wish Apple wouldn't define the largest products as the "best". Some people simply have different size preferences or needs. Why should the 4.7" phone lack OIS?

It's the same with the iPads, if you want a full sRGB color gamut, then you MUST buy the big one, not the smaller one. Why do Apple think those who prefer a 7.9" tablet dont' deserve the same quality screen as the big iPad?

Will it be the same with the iWatch? Only the big-wristed mofos get the greatest features, while us small-wristed men and women are stuck with an inferior iWatch?

Too all the same spec people, it's going to suck ass for the 5.5 owners to have a larger screen but same resolution.
Bigger size = more room for more things

Why would you want otherwise for people? Why would you want to step ahead of people who like larger displays just because you are torn between smaller size and more features? Selfish is what I call this.

Grow up.

I'm buying the 4.7 for sure and I want the best camera I can get. But what you're suggesting is that I should tell the 5.5 owners that they should have a worse camera than is possible for them for NO other reason than to spare my feelings.

What a jerk I'd be to say that to someone.

Chill out with the personal comments/attacks. I just voiced my opinion at the situation, without putting anyone down.

I don't think there's enough supply for OIS at this point. Samsung suffers from the same problem - their more popular Galaxy S5 doesn't have OIS while the Note 4 does.

LG and Nokia have had OIS for a while now because they sell much less phones.

you'll have to buy a handbag. The feminisation of western man continues...

My problem isn't with the choice of lens, it's with the choice not to make a thicker case to render the lens flush. Fill the extra space with battery, and the weight gains are minimal, yet the usability gains are significant.

Never while using my iPhone 4S have I paused to think, "this thing is TOO THICK!" I don't understand this obsession with thinness at the expensive of battery life. Is it just part of the game of ensuring that batteries are worn out at the end of two year contracts? Is it really no more than greed?

So it's official then, the 5.5" will be the premium, flagship iPhone, while the 4.7" will be for the Everyman, common folks, and and such like.

Ben Bajarin has some interesting tweets today. He references private notes which I'm assuming are talking points from Apple that are embargoed until after the event?

I've been reading through the comments and people are saying some real stupid things.

First of all I think there will only be a $50 difference between the two iPhone models, this is because the 5.5" will be way too expensive otherwise unless the 4.7 inch is cheaper than the current 5S.

There is no way Apple are adding extra features to the 5.5", the phone would become way too expensive. Battery and Screen Size/Resolution have got to be the only things as it makes use of the space.

It's a possibility that the 5.5" could have OIS and the 4.7" might not, but it just doesn't seem right.

I am skeptical Apple will even announce the damn thing, because the 5.5" iPhone will be considered the better model even though it's obvious they won't sell as many. However they do want to take away the phablet market from Samsung.

If there are going to be two iPhone 6's, then they will work like the iPad and iPad Mini, same everything apart from screen and battery.

Apple are a smart company, people think they're stupid for the 5C because it just sounds like a terrible idea. But it's a great business move, it makes the 5S look way better/more of an upgrade.

Look at the iPad Air and iPad Mini w/Retina.

The MacBooks are running OS X, lets compare iOS devices and Apples recent history of making two sized iOS devices.

Maybe they won't do it that way any longer with iOS devices. Maybe Apple will even have 3 different sizes of the iPhone this time around, perhaps keeping the 5C or 5S?

I love when people say some new android devices have better mp for camera or faster processor or more ram, then when tests are performed apples iPhones are 20% or more faster than the newest androids and the iPhones have lower specs but still outperform and thus not take a battery hit. Then we get called sheep because we follow the crowd and we don't know about tech. Getting a phone with better on paper specs than an iPhone is the equivalent of buying a giant suv to show off to compensate for your lack in other areas to me. Apple could outperform any android with half the ram and a third less mhz in the processor.

Why would Apple waste resources by making parts for a device that will never see the light of day?? :D

apple doesnt make these components, they source them from vendors who make them for various customers off-the-shelf.

they are making a 2 inch iPhone, a 4.7 inch iPhone, a 5.5 inch, and a 8 inch and 9.7 inch and a 12.9 inch next year. the three biggest ones are also called iPads and the 2 inch is called asian

I think people really like larger screen devices. Haven't you noticed how many people are carrying Notes and other phablets? The general trend is "big screens and bigger resolutions"

And before you say something like 'Doesn't apply to Apple', this is all just speculation anyways. There is no history to show that the bigger version of an iPhone typically sells more than the smaller.
But I bet the 5.5 will be hotter than the 4.7

While you make a fair point, the reason why I don't expect it is because the flagship models out there are still not really phablets at this point (even though it seems they're heading that way).

Those are 5S, S5, G3, M8. In this category, we have the G3 which is at 5.5 inches that however does manage to keep it fairly small thanks to its bezel and a design language which doesn't follow symmetry.

The Note series are obviously popular phones, but the S5 is still considered to be Samsungs flagship model. The most popular model.

We will just have to wait and see I guess.

Just a quick note. You said if I had noticed if the Note series is popular. Indeed it is, but not really where I am. Here the iPhone pretty much dominates. Then you have the S5 and M8 battling it out. 3/4 would be a phone from the Note series.

If there are spec differences, people will simply have to decide what is more important to them, a smaller screen or bigger, more expensive with better specs, just like with Macbook Pros.

Run that one by again.

Is that the goal?

"iOS device" in a dozen different sizes...

1.3, 1.5, 4, 4.7, 5.5, 7.9, 9.7, 12.9, etc.

All with the same OS, sensors and features..?!?

You're treating size as an additional feature, yet for many people, compact size is a feature. A smaller iPhone is easier to carry around everywhere I go, for one thing. It's likely more durable since it's not subjected to the same bending stresses.

I thought the 5.5" iPhone would have a higher resolution? If not, then I'm sorry for you. It should.
