If there actually is no TouchID in the iPhone tomorrow which looks to be the case, I am looking forward to how they spin it, if they even mention it. They obviously wont admit failure in being able to place it under the screen so I am interested in how they present it. One would assume they need to address it.

They would spin it as a more secure and easier way to use your iphone and Touch ID was never a failure just technology never stands still and in a few years something will come along to replace iris id or whatever it's called.

I dont know if they would go this route, especially if they are still working on putting TouchID under the screen and bringing it back when they are able to do that. Stating it that way doesnt really leave room to bring it back.

iPhone 7 256GB owner here.

My Galaxy S8+ arrives tomorrow, was offered a very good deal so decided to go for it.

Primary thing that swung me... I've loved the look of the S8+ since it came out but refused to buy one due to lack of a "TouchID" button on front, it's something I use often.

I wanted to wait for the iPhone 8/X - but now it's all but confirmed it looks like they couldn't crack it either. Must admit, don't like the look of the new iPhone, that split at top for speaker etc just looks wrong to me. I'll be an S8+ user until one of them nails it under the screen.

Once one them nails a completely bezel free display, there is literally gonna be nothing that'll separate mobile phones visually. I do think Apples "less bezel" look is a step backwards though.

The couldn't get it done in the amount of time given plain and simple. Face ID and the lack of Touch ID will become the new 3.5 mm jack

You're way too confident.
I really doubt face recognition will be faster or easier than touch ID.

I have no reason to not be confident at this point. People were extremely weary about Touch ID, now they can't live without it. Apple has my confidence because they have executed on biometrics before and aren't taking shortcuts.

You realise Apple spent hundreds of millions of dollars buying the company that owns the technology that they will use for this Face ID, and they also put a huge amount of engineering effort fitting the technology into the front of the iPhone (it's similar technology to Xbox Kinect and Intel RealSense, but fits in an area far, far smaller). So you have to wonder, why would they go through all that expense and effort if Touch ID was better ?

I think the way it was supposed to go was to have TouchID under the screen with FaceID for perhaps the next two years to not scare away people and help with the transition. Two years later, they would omit TouchID in favor of a more faster, more secure, second or third gen FaceID.

I don't see them going this route for a while, if ever. Going from Touch ID to face unlock, only to go back to Touch ID would look bad.

There's a lot we don't know. The rumors may be true that they tried putting TouchID under the glass but failed. However I would fully expect Apple to have several options in play when developing new cutting-edge tech like this. Often companies will launch several design teams with competing objectives, then pick the best one before manufacturing starts. Perhaps FaceID ended up being better, cheaper, more secure, and less prone to problems (like wet fingers etc.).

This is being painted as a design compromise, but it may not be. We will know tomorrow.

Wow, since a company spends millions on something that's it then:)
We'll see how it plays out.
They went through the expense and effort because they couldnt get the touch ID tech to work under the screen and rushed out a model without it.
Touch ID is better, far easier and quicker than taking selfies to unlock a phone :D

I personally think the skepticism will be way more intense than lack of 3.5mm headphone jack especially since apple included an adapter for people using corded headphones

No one is suggesting a headphone jack was ever innovation either; it’s for utility and something that hasnt’ Evolved as a tech since its inception (aside from the DAC driving it) dating well before iPhone even existed.

Touch ID and the home button, on the other hand, are iconic STAPLES of ‘what makes an iPhone, an iPhone’

Even with the HomePod leak in July, I still don’t feel braced for this to be a reality, at all

Thing is... I don't want "FaceID"

Like many I don't always unlock my phone at an angle where the camera could see it, sometimes it will be off centre or as I bring the phone towards my phone. Argument could be made that it will be somewhat positioned when I do view it - but I like that it's then ready and unlocked when it is... Not to mention security Face ID will never beat your fingerprint.

Then there is Apple Pay, what do we do in that case. Ensure phone is lined up with my phone as I move it to payment device, just doesn't make sense from a usability perspective.

Don't get me wrong, Samsung have the same issue which is why it's on the back. The only real option is to embedded it under the screen.

It doesn’t feel like Apple has the magic they once had where SJ would laugh at the idea of having focus groups, because he said consumers don’t even know what they want because we haven’t given it to them yet but they will once they see it, kinda thing

I don’t think everyone’s been dying for Touch ID to be killed off and replaced with face sensing abilities.

I could be wrong tho, but thats just my take!

I don't find Touch ID all that reliable. Nor does my wife. iPhone 7 users. We both have to try multiple times to get the phone to unlock at times. Not sure why, I've deleted and re-done my fingerprint measurements many times.

So for me, Touch ID is slow and sometimes I spend a lot longer trying to unlock the phone than I want to. Perhaps Face ID will be an improvement?

However...

With Touch ID (when it works), I can unlock the phone while it's sitting next to me on the couch/table. I would imagine that with Face ID we'll have to pick up the phone, no? This seems REALLY inconvenient if so.

Truthfully, I REALLY miss the "slide to unlock". I could slide and key in my 4-digit passcode reliably (and pretty quickly) every time. Now, I have to fumble with Touch ID until it finally presents me with the option to key in my passcode.

Well then you have options. You don't have any obligation to buy the iPhone X. From everything I have read, the camera should work at a number of different angles, even flat on a desk. For Apple pay, it authenticates silently (you're looking at your phone already) and then you hit the side button twice to approve. Easy enough. Either way, you have your options and don't have to go with Face ID.

This is a serious question that you just prompted in my head with things not registering right all the time, and spending more time to unlock the phone: how will FaceID work with people who wear burkas and have many of their facial features covered?

If the tech isn’t flawless for people who wear those and sunglasses at the same time, ISLAMAPHOBIA cries until the cows come home.

It might not, they can use the passcode if they choose to cover their face all the time. You can't be perfect on 100% of scenarios.

Exactly, TouchID could pretty much be used by anyone at any time unless you were wearing gloves. FaceID just seems like there will be too many variables involved for it to work consistently. Obviously I say this without knowing the technology.
