No reason to spin. I anticipate Face ID to be faster, unintrusive (not sure if that's a word), and be even better from a security standpoint.
A learning curve for consumers. Most consumers have only heard about the cheap iris scanners on Samsungs phones. This face id has to be intuitive.

Wow, since a company spends millions on something that's it then:)
We'll see how it plays out.
They went through the expense and effort because they couldnt get the touch ID tech to work under the screen and rushed out a model without it.
Touch ID is better, far easier and quicker than taking selfies to unlock a phone :D

If it's as quick as it's rumored to be, the phone will be unlocked before you've even fully brought it up to look at and use. Seems pretty easy to me, while also being more secure than Touch ID.

That would have to be psycho competent tech/actually be really impressive and groundbreaking, but just genuinely creep me out too in terms of awareness of the sensors and machine learning

I guess I’m the only one that wears the tinfoil hat around here haha

resting my finger on the touchID is so intuitive, engrained in my psyche, and a nice security authentication method because my finger is gonna be on that screen in a millisecond to touching icons and all that

Apple will bring back Touch ID when people start getting punched on the subway because the other guy thinks the iphone user is taking pictures of him..

I cannot wait for tomorrow,

The anticipation is killing me

It’ll also be fun to continue these threads based off info from leaks and to re-visit it after the Apple glossy presentation

Best part for me is Pre-Order day when people can't Pre-Order or their Order is on the way...hilarious for sure...

If the rumors are true that they couldn't get Touch ID to work in time, do we think next year's phone will have it underneath the screen? In one way, the fact they decided they could get away without it may indicate they found the Face ID to work very well.

So will they abandon Touch ID or try to make it work for next year?

Excellent question

I’m of the opinion it’ll fare fine for some, be flawed on some level for most and not Sci-if level competent and speed, brought back embedded in display magically next year

But OLED+trimmed bezels, and bigger screen, are enough for many with pent up demand to say “SCREW IT! Next year is next year”

Or people’ll go in bright eyed and bushy tailed about Face ID only believing the hype and not thinking about what apple does next year with touch sensors, and time will tell for them how it fares as an experience, as AJ sorta alluded to

My understanding is Apple is in the process of making their own OLED Screens. I can almost guarantee that sometime in the next 2 years they will bring back Touch ID. There's no reason not to.

Boom!

especially since they’ve been using just a plastic button forever before investing in touch sensor R&D, getting people liking it and comfortable with it for 4 generations of phones prior to this one, and 5 if you include the iPhone 8 with Touch ID and LED, etc.

I call it,

IPhone X is a compromised OLED iPhone. But still sweet, don’t get me wrong. And still tempting.

Confirmed 3GB of ram, matched with 7+ last year and 8+ this year, also screams some cutting of the corners,

I swear i said something almost identically about it during the HomePod leaks.

And I’m doubling down The day before :D

I really think the thing I’ll be constantly asking myself is if I want to spend $1000 95% of which I’d justify for an OLED screen/improved rear facing cameras,

It's likely going to be barely visible to consumers and just scan quietly in the background. Probably just a small animation and that's it.

This OLED Iphone is just to keep the masses happy with something new and compete with the Galaxy. If they didn't put out the OLED it was almost guaranteed millions would be going to Samsung. Iphone 10 will be the one that rocks Touch ID once again.

As much I'd love the choice of faceID or TouchID, I feel as thought they're opposing things.

Why would I need touchid active if faceid is faster? I don't anticipate it being any less or more secure, just a different way of securing our phones. As much as im sure they wanted both, I feel as though faceID will make touchID obsolete in the near future.

You could say the same thing about still requiring a PIN.

I personally think the skepticism will be way more intense than lack of 3.5mm headphone jack especially since apple included an adapter for people using corded headphones

No one is suggesting a headphone jack was ever innovation either; it’s for utility and something that hasnt’ Evolved as a tech since its inception (aside from the DAC driving it) dating well before iPhone even existed.

Touch ID and the home button, on the other hand, are iconic STAPLES of ‘what makes an iPhone, an iPhone’

Even with the HomePod leak in July, I still don’t feel braced for this to be a reality, at all

Tradition vs rationality. Glad Apple has gone with the latter. The Home button is gone, and good riddance. Let's usher in the future, ok?

People are so used to just pressing the home button. That's what it's been for every iPhone

Oh yea, this phone overall is definitely going to take some getting used to. I don't think my grandma coming off her jitterbug is going to be looking to upgrade to the iPhone X. I am looking forward to the changes though as I always felt the home button was not needed.

I agree. The reason you have iPhone users that are not willing to accept Face ID, is because they don't have any experience with it and some do not appreciate change. Therefore you have those Prefer Touch ID, because that's all they know. To make a fair evaluation, somebody needs to test both and then make their decision based off what they prefer.

Which is why it would have been great to have both on he same device.

The whole iris scanning thing has kind of been a gimmicky feature
