I just don't see how Apple Pay can be as intuitive/convenient with FaceID as it is with Touch ID. The whole point of NFC is the 'Near' part. I have a hard time seeing how you can use facial recognition without adding an extra step or awkwardly getting your face aligned/near the phone as you pay.

All the speculation/leaks indicate that the sensor/camera will be able to detect your face while at an angle. Even while it is laying flat on a table or desk.

I've seen comments like this in a few threads this week and I think they are overblowing the inconvenience of Face ID with Apple Pay.

it's still really easy:

- Double press power button while looking at phone
- Hold to payment terminal
done.

You can prepare the double press before the terminal is ready, for extra time savings.

If Apple could have got a fingerprint sensor under the OLED screen we would never see FaceID.

They can’t tout FaceID as better as Touch ID as that would make the 8 and the 8+ seem redundant with TouchID.

IMHO next year we will see 2 factor authentication with FaceID and touch is working hand in hand, just that for tech reasons, we can’t have it this year and the iPhone X is showing welcome to new Apple tech.

I highly doubt Apple came up with FaceId once they realized they couldnt get the TouchID sensor under the screen. FaceId was happening no matter what, maybe just originally it was going to be alongside TouchID.

I’m just gonna love to see the Apple spin on why we chose to go FaceID.

That's still not as easy as taking the phone directly from my pocket and holding it by the NFC terminal with my finger on the home button. Zero presses. No getting the phone up to my face.

It's a byproduct of making Apple ID so good out of the gate. It's really hard to come up with an alternative that isn't as intuitive or convenient.

It's probably good that Apple Pay hasn't been adopted as much as Apple originally hoped. I think the numbers bear it's a 'niche' rather than an essential feature.

But if the NFC reader is on the side, like it is on alot of Terminals in my country, it's not very comfortable to grip the phone in a way i can make sure it's not falling out of my hand AND keep the finger on TouchID at the same time.
It's not a problem when the reader is on the top though, since the phone is then resting on my hand. Maybe it would be easier with bigger hands.

But if i authenticate before holding it to the reader, i won't have that problem.

They can't innovate anymore.

So you can make a preassumption stating they can't innovate anymore based on technology that you haven't even seen yet? Or just based on your simple definition that your narrative doesn't meet Apple's because you don't agree with change. The word Innovation is overly Mis-used.

The couldn't get it done in the amount of time given plain and simple. Face ID and the lack of Touch ID will become the new 3.5 mm jack

I can’t remember when I last used the headphone jack on my 6. AirPods are seriously the best Apple accessory I have owned.
