I mean if you buy this idea that Apple is reducing the Mac line.

Personally, I think the Air and mini are on the way out. The Air certainly seems to be, given that Phil Schiller himself introduced the non touch bar MBP as something 'MacBook Air customers would love'.

I had forgotten the MacBook could use a spec bump.

The iMac deffo needs an update. The Mac Pro is ridiculous at this point - I wonder what on Earth happened (I don't think the Mac Pro is just a victim of Apple's apathy, like the mini is).

"A new 9.7-inch iPad debuted with an impressively low $329 price point,"

Very nice.

They will sell a lot of these, and probably also bring a lot of people over to the Apple ecosystem. Smart move.

The pricing of the iPad Mini is ridiculous, not everyone wants or needs 128GB. It is now higher then iPad with 32G. I really have to scratch my head here what Apple might be thinking..

the sort of move that they made to cut out the 32gb model looks more like Apple slowly expecting the demise of the iPad mini.

this sort of move looks like the Stock of the 32gb has become low enough, and Apple doesn't intend to produce anymore of that model. So they cut it from production, let the channel empty out from whats there already.

But it looks like the channel is still full of 128gb models. not only the channel, but Apple's own supply chain. So they have to keep it around as a product till enough supply goes down.

given that, once enough of the Mini with 128gb clear the channel, you'll likely see it discontinued as well.

thus, spelling the demise of the iPad Mini

which is a shame. Fantastic device for younger people. Especially given it originally had a cheaper entry point.

Bought my nieces iPad Minis. Budget was a bigger concern than storage. if the entry price was 399, they wouldn't have gotten iPads. I would have gone to the competition instead.

This just isn't enough! They needed to release _______.

Apple is doomed!! Tim Cook is the worst!!

Apparently, others didn’t recognize your sarcasm.

Look, it’s not that we’re disappointed about a lack of new hardware. It’s that Apple hasn’t differentiated itself in some years. It hasn’t lived up to its reputation of being an innovator, or justified its premium pricing by offering an inarguably superior product. Competing brands are introducing improvements first. Competing brands are producing hardware equal in quality. Sure, Apple’s hardware products are very nice as always, but not exclusive in any manner.

Apple is enjoying its sizable market share and brand recognition after being a niche brand for many decades. I, for one, was thrilled to see Apple convert the suffering Windows users. But without Jobs’ philosophical aspirations, the brand is de-evolving into another ubiquitous consumer commodity.

The early experience of being an Apple enthusiast is indescribable. It was no different than belonging to an enlightened but unpretentious fraternity. It inspired fan sites like this one. The product developments delighted and inspired. Now they seem routinely cosmetic and inconsequential.

Perhaps Apple’s exclusivity is over. Its products are no longer worthy of fan devotion. We should probably admit that it’s just another manufacturer who happens to make satisfactory products for most people.

Don't you know that Apple is doomed if it doesn't update every product every 12 months with meaningful improvements?

People feel offended when Apple doesn't update all devices using A series processors the same day the iPhone gets a new A series processor.

Apple gets criticised when the changes between (yearly) updates are too modest and Apple gets criticised if it waits 18 to 24 months to combine more changes into a bigger difference. Look at the iPad mini 3 (which only got Touch ID over the iPad mini 2). Apple got criticised for releasing a product with so little new things (there also was a storage bump/price cut included). But it would also have been criticised if it had waited to update the Mini until the release of the iPad Mini 4.

Apple releases new iPad with a bunch of new features (True Tone, wide gamut, Pencil support, four speakers, Smart Connector, updated camera) at a higher price: Apple only cares about Dollars.

Apple releases new iPad that is cheaper than any other iPad at that size: Apple only cares about Dollars.

Offended when there isn't replacements every 12 months?

How about:

MacBook Air - Days since last release - 744

iMac - Days since last release - 526

Mac Mini - Days since last release - 888

Appletv - Days since last release - 513

Mac Pro - Days since last release - 1189

Airport Extreme - Days since last release - 1460 +/-

I'm surprised they sell any Macs with this hardware being so old. I can see a tautological phenomenon starting here:

low mac sales = low attention (neglect) by Apple = lacklustre product = low mac sales...

I personally think it's a result of bad management. It seems they pull staff from other projects to focus on the consumer products (iPhone, iPad) then the Macs get neglected. These divisions need to progress simultaneously as an ecosystem and produce at least a speed bump each year to maintain momentum and interest.

Cook needs to manage each division as a separate entity but under a single umbrella paradigm - not juggle staff based on one or a few projects. It's as if the company can't multitask. They seem to focus on one thing at a time (i.e. iPhone then iPad, then MacBook Pro). I think too he needs to start cracking the whip and start getting things done, as Steve would instead of being overly involved with PR. It seems he has more passion for PR compared to tech. Forget ambitious projects like the Apple car unless you have your core products properly managed.

But who knows what's really going on behind closed doors. I miss the days of "but wait, I forgot, there's one more thing...".

I hear you, but these expectations are not reality.

See the resemblance? Both companies flourished financially under these textbook CEOs, riding Tsunamis that were triggered before their promotions. One brand has already been dethroned. Will the other follow?

Great video. You always knew one more thing was going to be something great.

They've lost the innovation thing, again.
Innovation is not a one time event, like a Mac Pro launch. Innovation is a continuous stream of updates.
updating an old iPad with a 2yr old chip, or using the coloring pencils to ship a red phone, is not innovation.

People shouldn't have let the rumours get to their heads and overhype things for themselves.

It is what it is, and a company is going to do what they want (not necessarily what some, most, all, or no consumers want, for better or for worse.) A red iPhone, or customized watch straps, or iPad refresh, are probably far more profitable than a revamped Mac Pro or Mac Mini. They're going to get developmental precedence, since any company's commitment to a certain user base is obviously influenced by profit.

This site wouldn't be worth visiting if all you read were gushy goo-goo-gah-gah's from Apple cheerleaders. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it likely isn't a golden eagle.

I think PC makers are making large strides in catching up to, and in some cases passing up, Apple Macs. The only lag is in coming up with system software appealing to Mac users who prefer OSX / MacOS.

Totally - the software is where it all is. Even Apple - although their hardware is beautiful and well-made, it's actually made from parts bought from other companies, put together by another company etc. Apple just design it.

It's the software that makes it. And I still don't think anything comes close to OS X.

A PC maker could make the most amazing laptop with incredible quality and huge battery life - but it would still run Windows which just isn't competition for OS X.

Well yes and no. There are patented components that require a fee to be paid that have to be sourced from an authorized manufacturer. Then there is custom SOCs that apple designs and outsources the manufacturing. Apple does not manufacture anything, but some of the parts are built and made under license, other parts, like the SOC are apple designed and owned all the way.

Of course. I was downplaying Apple's design and manufacturing somewhat, but my point still stands: it needs to be excellent hardware and software. And PCs are restricted by the use of Windows.

OS X is the best OS hands down. But since Tim Cook took office he has been trying to reduce OS X to iOS and it is getting sickening. Sierra is the latest example of this. Hopefully his comments about paying attention to pro users was a mark of changing course.

Agreed, but that is changing rapidly and radically.

Comparing OS X Sierra to Windows 10, there is a much smaller margin of difference between say OS X Snow Leopard and Windows Vista. The gap is closing.

Microsoft has shown incredible dedication to this OS, improving the Windows environment & multi-tasking abilities, and offering products and services to try to reclaim some of the Users they have lost to OS X and Linux. That's not to say that Apple and Linux developers are snoozing away - but it is to say that, unlike in times past, Microsoft's heart is unquestionably in this game.

If this trend continues where Windows improves at a more rapid pace than other OS', other than platform-specific software, the reasons to not seriously consider Windoze devices (and the hardware savings this entails) will become increasingly fewer. I never thought I would buy another Windows device again not too many years ago - but the SP3 beat the iPad Pro in terms of what device did a better job of meeting my needs. Not too many years ago, such a device did not exist if it had a Windows OS.
