2011-03-23 18:14:00 Left FedEx Sort Facility ANCHORAGE, AK

Looks like I'm on FDX 14 to Indy. The flight was delayed 2 hours.

My smart cover was on the same flight and I got it the following day. I hope the delay doesn't make it miss the truck into town.

Mine looks to be on the same one. FX 14. I have a scheduled delivery date for tomorrow, March 24th, by 4:30. Is that possible since it is going to Indiana instead of Memphis? I live in Georgia btw.

My iPad 2 seems to have stopped in Linwood, PA. It was supposed to deliver today by 4:30 PM EST, but FedEx must've fallen behind. Now my tracking says "At dest sort facility" with no ETA. I'm assuming it will be here by tomorrow since my original arrival date was today, and I'm located in NJ.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Delivered!!!!!!!

Or rather "picked up" from the local Fedx hub in LA! Typing my reply on it right now. 32GB Black AT&T in great condition and no backlight bleeding. Ordered 1:05am on 3/11.

Don't give up hope y'all! I skipped the first iPad and I'm glad I waited. Patience really is a virtue! :)

It was great playing the waiting game with you all!

Placed an order for an ipad and a smart cover Mar 12, 2011 at 07:39 AM PDT. Was set to be shipped in "2-3 weeks".

Got an email today saying the smart cover has been shippd - but not the ipad. When i saw the email it got my hopes up, then got shot done!

Anyway, does the smartcover being shipped out have any indication on the ipad possibly being shipped soon as well? Or is this just wishful thinking?

I'm in the nashville area so it surprised me to see I wasn't on the memphis flight either. But I was on the Indy one for my smart cover too.

My scheduled delivery date was originally the 25th before being pushed to the 29th. I'm hoping to see it tomorrow (my smart cover made the same path but without the 2 hour flight delay). Looking at the log it looks likes a 5:00am truck out of Indy and towards Nashville, hopefully it has enough time between the flight that arrives at 3:40.

I think you could see your delivery in GA late at night. Probably more likely to see it Friday morning though.

ordered mine 430PST - scheduled ship was 5 - 7 days, and delivery quote was march 22 - 29. it finally started moving tuesday (after calling apple; subsequently receiving free smart cover), but it now looks like it's stalled in anchorage.

Held at Sort Facility?! Is that some type of "package" euphemism?

Was quoted ship 4/1 - arrive in Fla on 4/6
Was shipped today to arrive 3/29

Held at sort facility

Thats what happened to mine on the 22-23rd in Anchorage.
FedEx CS was unable to provide any explanation of why/what that was.
They had to trace my package and still, nothing. It later showed up in Forth Worth and nobody knew why. At least it was not lost..yet.
The CS rep stated the Ipad release had totally backed the system up. She stated their best guess on what was going on is the flights were full, so the packages were "Held at sorting" until the next available flight the next day. She also stated it seems that scan is not updating properly with correcting delivery estimates at all, hence the blank delivery dates after the package missed the original estimates. Of course, by not delaying the original estimates, the "Held at sorting" scan made tracking for customers and them worse and inaccurate. Meanwhile, the packages were continued on their way and like mine, ended up somewhere close "hopefully" to deliver ASAP. I guess routing is computer generated and it tries to finish it.

Ordered around 6:15am PST on 3/11. Was quoted April 1st as ship date. Shipped today and should be here by March 29th (64GB) and March 30th (32GB). Was totally prepared for another 2 weeks so this is a great surprise. :)

Cover went to Memphis and left at 3:45 this morning and iPad went to Indy and left at 5 am. Here's hoping that it finds its way to Pittsburgh before 4:30!

Fedex is currently delivering within 3-5 business days to the East Coast. High volume and the weekend slowdown seem to have caused traffic delays at Lantau Island (Hong Kong), but these have been largely resolved. The jam has been passed down the line to Anchorage, where available space on outbound Fedex flights (typically to the main Fedex hub in Memphis) is causing some variability.

In spite of the apparent snafus reported by others, this process is actually going very smoothly. Fedex has been adding flights as needed to handle the volume, and Customs and Border Patrol has cut its clearing time (at least in locations like Anchorage).

However, waiting on a package is still going to be a bit like sitting in a traffic jam. I've had some units move through without any delays while others (ordered earlier) have been held over in Anchorage. It's just a matter of luck of the draw, and I try not to take it personally.

Based on your description and current Fedex flight data, your iPad is already in Pittsburgh and the plane with your cover is landing about now. Offhand, I would say that delivery today is 99 percent certain barring traffic accidents, snow swtorms, and what-not.

For those trying to understand Fedex's routing patterns, here's a list of their hubs in the US. Generally, international shipments inbound through a point like Anchorage will go to the superhub, then alternatively to a national hub, and so forth:

Memphis, Tennessee - SuperHub

Indianapolis, Indiana - National Hub
Fort Worth, Texas - National Hub
Anchorage, Alaska - National Hub

Newark, New Jersey - Regional Hub
Oakland, California - Regional Hub

Chicago, Illinois - Metroplex
Los Angeles, California - Metroplex

The exact routing for any particular package will depend (obviously) on timing, space on available flights, and traffic conditions. Given Anchorage as an entry point, Fedex's traffic planners may take a short-cut and just send West Coast deliveries to LA or Oakland. Then again, they may not--in some cases, routing through Memphis may be longer in terms of distance but shorter in terms of time.

How dare you not take it personally! And who are you to pee pee on everybody else's parade that Fedex is obviously trying to screw over? ;)

With that being said, mine just showed up in my city about 20 minutes ago and *should* get loaded up on a truck for delivery this morning.

Actually, Fedex is almost certainly routing packages using a sophisticated form of linear programming combined with cost-minimization to identify optimal routing within a bounded mathematical space. Random routing would risk an enormous waste of corporate resources, making the company less profitable and also less competitive with UPS, the USPS, and regional and local courier services.

Within applied mathematics and operations research, there is a well-established class of techniques surrounding the "transportation problem." These techniques resolve the logistics of complex routing problems. The optimal solution from a macro standpoint, however, may not seem to make much sense to an individual end-user.

I am sure there is some sort of logic behind it but when two iPads are ordered from the same location and they are routed completely differently it makes the entire process unpredictable for the customer.

Also when you know they are sending from Anchorage to Oakland and you live 5 minutes from Oakland and it gets routed through Memphis it makes even less sense even if this is more efficient for FedEx to do.

I was under the impression that the iPads were still in shipping containers when they reached Alaska and that they weren't broken up until they reached Memphis or whatever large hub it went through. And if they have the resources to do that in all of the hubs they are going to but they don't in Alaska, that might make sense from a cost standpoint.
