Apple now predicts it to take 3-4 weeks instead of 4-5 weeks for new iPad orders to ship (even though they're still busy with 3/11 orders). Would I be cynical if I thought Apple was trying to stop their stocks from falling further since the Japan disaster?

Mine shipped late last night after being "prepared to ship" for almost 48 hours. black 64g AT&T ordered at 4:40 pm PST on the 11th.

I agree. In all likelihood, Apple originally planned to release the iPad2 in late March or early April. If they had waited, they would have had a more substantial inventory to better meet an initial surge in demand (manufacturing of the iPad2 started in early February).

However, the introduction of the Xoom and the impending delivery of other Android tablets forced Apple's hand. It wasn't the reality of these tablets (which were frankly a bit unpolished) but the attention they were getting on the Internet. By moving up the introduction of the iPad2, Apple preempted this.

The downside, of course, is that Apple didn't have the inventory to fully meet the demand and risked alienating buyers with delivery delays. On the whole, however, they won their bet. The iPad2 has overwhelmingly grabbed the attention of buyers back from the Xoom.

From what I read, Apple still hasn't caught up with orders from March 11th. I'm kind of new to the fold. (Mac Mini and iPod Touch) This doesn't seem "magical" to me.

Your right, I ordered my on the 11th at 9:15 pm (PT) and the status is Not Shipped Yet.

I'm pretty much thinking I can pick one up at Target or Apple by the end of the weekend without a problem.

You are so right, ordered 16 gb black ATT at 2:49cst on 3/11, one of the first, and 2weeks later it has finally reached my local sort facility hopefully today is my day.

Based on the order time, Apple should be on the verge of shipping your unit. "Prepared for shipment" is a somewhat meaningless phrase, however. Apple's facility in Shenzhen has to formally notify Fedex that your unit is ready for shipment so that Fedex can enter it into their system, generate a tracking number and label, and include the unit on its manifest for pick-up. At that point, Apple can then send you an email with the shipping announcement and the tracking number.

If you can closely monitor your credit card or bank account, the presence of a hold by Apple should indicate that the shipment is imminent. Have you checked that? Shipping should occur within 24-48 hours of the hold being placed.

I understand your frustration with all of this. I was completely beside myself when I saw my smart covers stalled on Lantau Island for days, but at least then I started trying to understand the logistics a bit better.

Agreed and on top of that, the demand was unprecedented! I put my order through but got impatient when i saw 3 to 5 business days so I hit suburban malls since they are usually less crowded than NYC. I saw the lines be double and triple of what they were for the iPhone 4 on the first day but also on the day after. iPad 1 was not even close! I had picked up one the way I wanted it on day 3 last year. This year the lines were going out to the parking lots! It was insane!

I have not yet received an email from apple. i received my smartcover and apple care last week. (shipped on 3/11) no engraving. its been sitting in "prepared for shipment" status for over a week. i just checked my cc account and they billed me for it on the 22nd... hopefully thats a sign it will be shipped soon...

Mine will finally be delivered today. Fedex didn't meet the estimated delivery date of the 24th, but hey, it's estimated. I placed my order at 7:16 AM EST for a 16gb black wi-fi. Apple said it would ship in 5-7 business days, and would deliver between March 22-29. Not the best product launch in the world, but they did hold up to the dates in most cases. The bad thing is that stockouts results in lost customers alot of the time. I believe the Iphone 5 may allow preorders to get a better feel for what the demand will be.

Black 32GB AT&T (no engraving) ordered at 3am PDT on March 11th. Estimated shipping 5-7 business days. FedEx nailed the estimated delivery date of March 25th before 4:30pm.

Let's hope it's not an empty box like the person on the prior post (although the weight measurement via FedEx would suggest something has to be in there).

Same happened here. CC charged and "Prepared for Shipment" on Tuesday evening but finally got my shipment notice at 12:10AM EDT today. I ordered 64G AT&T 3G Black, no engraving, at 3:54PM EDT.
