Fedex has now officially added a 4:45 pm Anchorage-Oakland flight. FWIW, some of these flights are routinely scheduled, but freight flights aren't the same as passenger flights, and Fedex's traffic planners will adjust their flight plans to accommodate the package volume. Right now, they seem to be accommodating as much as possible given their fleet size.

Just got the following update from FedEx:
Mar 24, 2011 2:49 PM Departed FedEx location INDIANAPOLIS, IN

Strange. How did it get to Indianapolis without showing leaving Anchorage? Was this a lost container that suddenly showed up in IND? Or does FedEx sometimes just skip some of the updates?

my iPad is taking a US tour; just arrived in Chicago.
Hope it gets delivered before the weekend.
Still shows delivery on March 24 by 4:30pm.

Not to be a pessimist (especially since I am on that flight) but - will Memphis become the next Landau Island/ Alaska?::eek:

Your concern is understandable. However, Memphis is the Fedex "superhub," the center of the freight universe. There are so many inbound and outbound Fedex flights for Memphis that a significant delay would be unusual.

Also, parcels going through Anchorage had to be cleared by Customs and Border Patrol, and this process requires some additional time. This is not a factor in Memphis.

Last, the initial delays on Lantau Island (March 18-21) were probably a result of high volume combined with a weekend slowdown. This jam rippled through to Anchorage. Accommodations have been made and the traffic jam seems to be over.

All in all, Fedex is turning in an extraordinarily good performance right now, the few snafus notwithstanding. I got one iPad in 48 hours point-to-point from Shenzhen to NYC, and I expect to get another tomorrow in 72 hours point-to-point to DC. For standard, non-expedited international shipping, that's unheard of.

It arrived!

32GB AT&T White ordered 03/11 at 3:26am PST.
Ship 5-7 day/Deliver 03/22-03/29 bracket. Both targets hit as scheduled.

Thanks to everyone for the info sharing and humor! Best of luck to those of you still left biting your nails. :)

I just checked my flight trackers, and Fedex has added an EIGHTH flight leaving this afternoon from Anchorage, FX9005 departing at 5:15 pm AKDT for Memphis (the third Memphis flight this afternoon).

At least for the Memphis flights, this is similar to yesterday's pattern. Given the overall number of flights, it's clear that the boys and girls at Fedex are now blitzing to clear iPads as quickly as possible through their system. I suspect they would like as many Friday deliveries as possible so everyone can relax and enjoy the weekend.

ONE MORE UPDATE: As of 8:23 pm EST, Fedex has six flights in the air out of Anchorage and headed to Memphis, Ft. Worth, Newark, and Indianapolis. If you think your iPad will be going through any of these points, you should be checking your tracker to see what the scans show. There is still a flight that will be departing for Oakland, for those of us on the West Coast, and the third Memphis flight, which I imagine will be a kind of general delivery catch-all for many destinations. Good luck, everyone!

Thanks for the research. Mine cleared customs in Alaska at 3:29 and I'm hoping for a flight tonight.

@belder: 3/11 10:00 hawaii time..... i just was reading other threads... people who ordered on the 13th & 15th already got their orders... this is lame....

If you can provide some additional data, it might help to clarify your exact predicament. For instance, what time of the day did you place the March 11 order? Has Apple sent you an email with a tracking number that you can use to determine shipping status? Has Apple debited your account (or put a hold on it)?

To give you a point of comparison, I placed orders at 2:00-2:15 pm EST on March 11. Smart covers were shipped on March 18. The iPads were shipped very late on March 22. If you placed your order after mine, Apple may not yet have gotten to it. If you placed your order before mine, then there may be a special circumstance (engraving?) that has slowed things down a bit.

I hope this helps.

Based on the order time, Apple should be on the verge of shipping your unit. "Prepared for shipment" is a somewhat meaningless phrase, however. Apple's facility in Shenzhen has to formally notify Fedex that your unit is ready for shipment so that Fedex can enter it into their system, generate a tracking number and label, and include the unit on its manifest for pick-up. At that point, Apple can then send you an email with the shipping announcement and the tracking number.

If you can closely monitor your credit card or bank account, the presence of a hold by Apple should indicate that the shipment is imminent. Have you checked that? Shipping should occur within 24-48 hours of the hold being placed.

I understand your frustration with all of this. I was completely beside myself when I saw my smart covers stalled on Lantau Island for days, but at least then I started trying to understand the logistics a bit better.

All scheduled Fedex flights have now left Anchorage. If you had an iPad that you knew to be in Anchorage, then the scans should hopefully say something like "Departed Fedex Location" or "Left Fedex Sort Facility" at this point. That means it's in the air and you've got a decent shot at a Friday delivery.

If the scanning data doesn't say such nice things by 10 pm EST, then your iPad may be stuck in Anchorage. If this is the case, the scans will eventually say "In Transit" or "Held at Sort Facility." This means your iPad got left behind. There is a slight chance that Fedex will schedule one more flight to Memphis, perhaps around 1 am AKDT, but I wouldn't bet on it.

If your package seems to have been left behind, there is still a very good chance that Fedex will forward it on tomorrow afternoon and deliver it on Saturday. So: don't despair yet. Best not to despair at all. It's bad for ya.

Apple now predicts it to take 3-4 weeks instead of 4-5 weeks for new iPad orders to ship (even though they're still busy with 3/11 orders). Would I be cynical if I thought Apple was trying to stop their stocks from falling further since the Japan disaster?

And yayyy, my Smart Cover FINALLY escaped from Alaska.

I ordered my IPad2 (Black 64GB, WiFi, 3G) at about 10:30 a.m.PST on the release date. I originally had a ship date of April 1st. I received a "prepared for shipment" notice on March 22nd at about 10:30 p.m. Since that time, my Fed Ex tracking has been: (Destination - California)

I'm very happy they are shipping sooner than originally expected but I hope mine doesn't get "stranded on the island" like so many before it.
