Right now I'm not picking up any Fedex flights headed in that direction (or any direction, for that matter) from DFW. This probably means that Fedex will schedule some flights later this afternoon or evening, but has not yet announced its final flight plans.

For some reason, Fedex doesn't seem to have worked out its connecting flights very well for that hub. Anyway, if I were you, I would monitor for a departure scan through the mid-evening. That would still give Fedex sufficient time to get your iPad onto a truck for a Saturday delivery.

I was one of those in the KC area from yesterday. They did truck ours up last night and delivered them today. The truck yesterday left about 1:30 and arrived in KC about midnight, in plenty of time to deliver today.

I'm sorry I didn't check the Memphis-LAX morning flights. IMHO, your unit could have made it onto the 3:45 am flight to LAX, but it didn't. Maybe there wasn't any space, or maybe the freight handlers just couldn't turn things around fast enough. The early morning hours at Memphis look like they get extremely jammed for Fedex employees, who literally have things flying at them from all directions at that time. And they have to get them flying right back out. It's got to be tough.

True True. Here's hoping for tomorrow.

Not that Fedex has asked for our advice, but I think you just put your finger on a major operational flaw in their system. If they want Ft. Worth to truly be a national hub, they need to put in more connecting flights to distribute packages to the region. Maybe they're a bit short of capital for a needed fleet expansion. Given the plight of our banking system over the past three years, this wouldn't surprise me.

I agree if they had a flight to KC my delivery would have only been 1 day late instead of 2 days.

One thing I noticed during my 2 weeks of being involved was that you very rarely saw anyone post there route traveled as being direct from Hong Kong to Memphis even though there were normally 2 non stops a day. I assume Apple was using them for their store replacements instead of providing better service to their online customers.

I have been a long time Apple customer and have always gotten great customer service except for this release.

I like your analysis and tend to agree with you on the Memphis flights. I don't really flavor my own analysis of Apple with personal feelings, since I tend to view things more in terms of business operations and as a former executive. However, it WOULD be nice if Steve Jobs replied to my emails. I hope he's doing well these days and has a speedy recovery.

stuck in Alaska

I've been stuck in Alaska for 26 hours. I'm hoping for an early evening flight to Memphis and Saturday delivery. (Ordered at 3:11 am PT on 3/11 - anybody order earlier and still not have their iPad?)

Here's some breaking news for those with iPads languishing in Anchorage: in the past hour, Fedex has announced four outbound flights to the lower-48. Two flights to Memphis just took off. Two more flights, one to Memphis and one to Newark, will take off in the next 30 minutes.

Fedex tracker scans should be completely updated for these flights NLT 8:30 pm EST. If your iPad is on one of them, the scan with say something like "Departed Fedex sort facility." Any iPads making their way onto these flights have a shot at a Saturday delivery, except, it seems, for those passing through the semi-functional Ft. Worth hub.

Further flights may be announced. Yesterday there were a total of eight outbound afternoon flights, including ones to Indianapolis, Ft. Worth, and Oakland. However, it's running a bit late for further announcements, and we may be looking at the beginning of a weekend wind-down. I'll post further comments if there's something more to say on this.

If your iPad doesn't appear to be on any of these flights, then Fedex should re-scan it, and within the next two hours or so you should see something like "In transit" or "Held at Fedex sort facility." This means you have a stranded iPad.

Good luck and a happy weekend to all.

Dare I ask?

Hi everyone! I've been reading this thread since the start, I am getting antsy, so I decided to jump in and join. I ordered a Black 64GB AT & T iPad2 on 3/12 @8:06am PDT. Ships 4/4 and delivers 4/7.

Is there anyone here that ordered on this day? If so, has there been any activity on your order at all?

Clarification of activity at the Ft. Worth Fedex hub: One 11 pm flight has now been scheduled out of this hub, but it is headed for Memphis and is therefore not being used as a connecting flight for regional distribution of iPads sent from Anchorage. It looks like anyone relying on this hub (those in Kansas, for instance) is going to be served by connecting trucks rather than connecting flights. This is practically like snail mail all over again.

I've been following this forum for a week, and I haven't seen the March 12 orders being processed yet. Offhand, I would tend to guess that Apple will get to these orders in the middle of next week. The 3G units appear to be lagging some in terms of the order times/dates being currently processed.

If your credit/bank account is not yet showing a hold, and if you do not yet have an actual tracking number, then nothing at all is likely to happen until Monday due to the weekend slowdown that I expect is happening in the Far East. Others may have better data than me, and if so, I hope they will jump in with corrections.

Thank you. Actually, all this really takes is a little willingness to check multiple web sites and to exercise a little care in following the data. In 15-30 minutes, practically anyone on this forum could have better knowledge of on-the-ground operations than what the Fedex CSR's have. The only slight advantage that I have beyond this is some knowledge of international business operations.

Incorrect. Ordered 16gb, black, AT&T on march 12 630pm EST and mine should be delivered on Monday.

I promised further tidbits on Anchorage should they occur, and they have. Fedex now has announced a total of seven outbound flights, three of which are presently in the air. Fedex is very heavy on the Memphis flights, with a total now of five. And an Oakland flight has been added to the Newark flight, so the two coasts are getting a bit of extra help.

The flights should all be in the air by 9:15 p.m. EST, so you can expect updating scans NLT 10 pm EST.

No flights for Ft. Worth although these have occurred on previous days. My entirely speculative conclusion is that Fedex doesn't like using connecting trucks any more than we like it, and so they are now routing around Ft. Worth by sending parcels to their Memphis superhub with its far superior set of connecting flights.

Anchorage Sort Facility

I actually have friends who work at the Anchorage FedEx Sort facility. I've jokingly told them to hurry the iPads along and they're like "that's no joke we get like 300 ****ing calls a day about it!"

Please tell them they're doing an outstanding job. I got one iPad in exactly 72 hours point-to-point from Shenzhen to Northern Virginia. My girl friend got hers in 48 hours to NYC. This is an unheard-of performance for standard (non-expedited) international deliveries. I don't think enough people realize that Fedex is practically walking on water, the few snafus notwithstanding.

This is very good news. Thank you. If Apple is now moving to orders placed after March 11, then they may be able to clear their backlog faster than expected.

It depends what model you ordered , first orders (3-5 & 5-7 days) WIFI models were shipped 1st, followed by 3G models , now ( 1st April ) 3G models are shipping 1st it seems , I ordered a 16 G WIFI and it went to "Prepared for Shipment" a couple of hours ago , while there were some reports here that 3G models ordered after me are already shipped.

Incorrect. Ordered 16gb, black, AT&T on march 12 630pm EST and mine should be delivered on Monday.

Are you serious!? You ordered on the 12th and you already have a tracking number? And if you say being delivered Monday you must have seen progress already? Wow, I know there are gonna be some people on here who ordered on the 11th not real thrilled to see that.

Fedex has now added an eighth flight outbound from Anchorage, once again headed to Memphis and with a departure of 9:45 p.m. EST. The people with both Fedex and Customs and Border Patrol are working very, very hard up in Anchorage right now. This has probably become more intense than Christmas Eve. Santa would be proud.

I ordered the same unit. Black, 16g, ATT.
March 12 at 1:30 AM. Ships April 4, deliver 7th.
No change, still 'not yet shipped.'

Yup, left AK today. Estimated delivery is the 29th.

Hey Cresence,
Thanks for the help. Is a good way to correlate FedEx tracking status to a flight? How close are the timestamps to take-off times? If the FedEx.com departed location timestamp is 3:10pm is it most likely flight FDX14 (takeoff 3:11pm) or FDX72 (takeoff 3:16pm), or is there lag or lead time? Could it be FDX86?
